INTRODUCTION
Everything Joseph has
done to this point had a reason.
After Josephs's brothers
return with Benjamin and Joseph sets the trap by having his servants place the
silver cup of divination into Benjamin’s bag, they all return to stand before
Joseph to receive their punishment for the theft.
It is during this time
the brothers reveal, rather confess, that this was happening to them because God
knew their sin. (Which was the way they treated Joseph).
Even more, the brothers
showed works worthy of their repentance when Judah offered himself in
Benjamin’s place, for both Benjamin’s sake as well as Jacobs, knowing that the
loss of yet another son would kill him.
It is at this point
Joseph can take no more. Scripture
reveals that multiple times Joseph had to leave his brother's presence to cry
over the situation, and he was at another breaking point seeing his brother’s
hearts had changed, they had matured, and they were truly sorry for what they
had done.
It is in Genesis 45 where we see the results of their repentance.
Be mindful during the
reading, firstly of the literal, then the allegorical.
SCRIPTURE READING
Genesis 45
“Then Joseph could no longer control
himself before all his attendants, and he cried out, “Have everyone leave my
presence!” So there was no one with Joseph when he made himself known to his
brothers. 2 And he wept so loudly that the Egyptians heard him, and Pharaoh’s
household heard about it.”
I.
JOSEPH
MAKES HIMSELF KNOWN
a.
The
brothers now stand in an empty throne room before Joseph
i.
Joseph “made himself
known” to the brothers
ii.
They realize who
Joseph is, the one they had sold and thought dead
iii.
The brothers were
terrified in his presence because of his power and authority
iv.
Joseph forgives them (two
years into the famine)
v.
Joseph warns them of
the seven-year famine having 5 more years to go
vi.
Verse 6-7 “For two years now there has been famine in the
land, and for the next five years there will be no plowing and reaping. 7 But
God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a remnant on earth and to save
your lives by a great deliverance.”
b.
The
remnant of the tribes will stand before the enthroned Messiah
i.
Jesus is revealed to
the tribes
ii.
They realize He is the
Messiah, the one whom they pierced
iii.
Jesus forgives them
iv.
There is a seven-year
tribulation
v.
This will probably
take place two years into the tribulation
vi.
Verse 6-7
famine=tribulation, sons of
Jacob = tribes of Israel
c.
JOSEPH
GIVES THE BROTHERS INSTRUCTIONS FOR THEIR “GREAT DELIVERANCE” FROM THE
WORLDWIDE FAMINE
i.
Again, literal reading
shows Joseph, with his power and authority makes provision for the sons of
Jacob and all their families to deliver them from the famine and place them in
the land of plenty
ii.
This is the provision
the Messiah will make for the remnant of Israel who will be delivered from the
Great Tribulation and preserved.
II.
PHAROAH’S
RESPONSE TO JOSEPHS BROTHERS
a.
PHARAOH
AND ALL HIS OFFICIALS WERE PLEASED
i.
Everyone loved Joseph
because of his ability to speak with God and know God’s Will
ii.
They respected him and
his authority
iii.
After serving Pharaoh
for nine years so far, they have probably become close
iv.
By the way, 9 in the
Bible represents divine completeness
1.
Christ died at the
ninth hour on the cross “to make a way for salvation”
2.
Joseph in the ninth
year of service made a way for Israel’s salvation
3.
Yom Kippur (The Day of
Atonement) is on the ninth day (Leviticus
23:32)
4.
There are also nine
fruits of God’s Holy Spirit (faithfulness, gentleness, goodness, joy, kindness,
long-suffering, love, peace, and self-control. (Galatians 5:22-23)
b.
“NEVER
MIND YOUR BELONGINGS, THE BEST WILL BE HERE FOR YOU”
i.
Just as Pharoah
(allegorically God) was “pleased” about the sons of Israel’s return, he wanted
to bless them, sending them everything they would need for travel and survival,
so much so, he said they need bring nothing with them, the best there is will
be provided to them when they arrive.
c.
THE
LITERAL AND ALLEGORICAL ARE ONE
i.
Literal and
allegorical exegesis is not “different views” of the same text, rather, the text
has more than one meaning.
ii.
Just because the bible
contains books that were revelations to man does not mean they did not
literally take place.
1. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for
teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, 17 so that the
servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
iii.
A revelation from God
is NOT “what may take place”, rather, what IS.
1. Isaiah 55:8-9
“For my thoughts are not
your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the Lord. 9 “As the
heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my
thoughts than your thoughts.”
iv.
God, in His infinite
wisdom, orchestrated the LITERAL situations
1. Genesis 45:7 “But God sent me ahead of you to preserve for you a
remnant on earth and to save your lives by a great deliverance.”
2. Genesis 45:8 “it was not you who sent me here, but God.”
v.
These LITERAL
situations paint a picture for mankind through ALLEGORICAL MEANING, so we will
in effect;
1. Know the foundation of the faith and have God’s Word
as a guide to our conscience and measure for the Holy Spirit as well as our
Spiritual Growth.
2. Recognize allegorical speech from past scriptures to
KNOW they were God-breathed, a foreshadowing of coming events and true Words of
God, thus added to the Holy Bible as canon.
3. For this reason, many other manuscripts were
rejected from inclusion into the Holy Scriptures because within their text were
no “fingerprints” of God’s authorship.
III.
THE
BROTHERS RETURN TO JACOB
a.
THE
BROTHERS RETURN TO JACOB
i.
First to convince
their father, second to gather all their people and flocks
b.
JACOB
DIDN’T BELIEVE AT FIRST
i.
However, the evidence
could not be disputed…the food, carts, thousands of dollars worth of silver.
ii.
Jacob believed.
c.
JACOBS
SPIRIT WAS REVIVED
i.
Jacobs “spirit was
revived”
ii.
And we know he acted
in faith following his sons back to Egypt because of verse 28
“And Israel said, “I’m convinced! My son Joseph is still alive.
I will go and see him before I die.”
Remember, any time we see Jacob’s name replaced with Israel, he is acting out of faith and not his own flesh.
CONCLUSION –
Jacob, accepting his
beloved son Joseph, who had been thought dead for 20 years, was alive and well
and holding a position of great honor, power, and authority over all of Egypt.
Joseph would be Israel
and the sons of Israel’s salvation from the famine.
They would have
everything they would need to survive provided for them by Joseph and live
under the protection and fat of the land of Egypt.
