63. Triumphal Entry
INTRODUCTION – Triumphal Entry
From Mark 11 on, the events of the gospel take place near Jerusalem. From here, we will read the account of His triumphant entry through to His resurrection from the dead.
So, from Mark chapter 11 to the end of the gospel is a time span of eight days. The first of these is what we refer to as Palm Sunday. This is when Jesus makes His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, accompanied by crowds who laid branches on the road before Him as He rode into town on the colt of a donkey.
The significance of this event was not understood by the disciples until later. We read this in John 12:16a.
“These things His disciples did not understand at the first; but when Jesus was glorified, then they remembered that these things were written about Him…”
Many times in our lives, we won’t recognize the hand of God until later. Now, with the benefit of this knowledge and further revelation through scripture, we will take a closer look at these verses.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Mark 11:1-11
“And as they *approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He *sent two of His disciples, 2 and *said to them,
“Go into the village opposite you, and immediately as you enter it, you will find a colt tied there, on which no one yet has ever sat; untie it and bring it here. 3 And if anyone says to you, ‘Why are you doing this?’ you say, ‘The Lord has need of it’; and immediately he will send it back here.”
4 And they went away and found a colt tied at the door, outside in the street; and they *untied it. 5 And some of the bystanders were saying to them, “What are you doing, untying the colt?” 6 And they spoke to them just as Jesus had told them, and they gave them permission. 7 And they *brought the colt to Jesus and put their garments on it; and He sat on it. 8 And many spread their garments in the road, and others spread leafy branches, having cut them from the fields. 9 And those who went in front and those who followed were shouting:
“Hosanna!
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Yahweh;
10 Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David;
Hosanna in the highest!”
11 And Jesus entered Jerusalem and came into the temple; and after looking around at everything, He left for Bethany with the twelve, since it was already late.”
I. PREPARATION
a. The Providence of God
i. We read that Jesus tells His disciples to get a colt for Him
ii. A colt no one has ever sat upon
iii. By the foreknowledge and providence of God, this very specific colt was arranged by God, perhaps even before time began, to be ready for His use on this very day.
Ephesians 1:11 “In Him, we also have obtained an inheritance, having been predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will…”
This was prophesied in Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Make a loud shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is victorious and endowed with salvation, humble and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.”
iv. There are no accidents or coincidences with God
1. Was the great fish that swallowed Jonah an accident or by chance?
Jonah 1:17 “And Yahweh appointed a great fish to swallow Jonah, and Jonah was in the stomach of the fish three days and three nights.”
a. We read later in Jonah chapter 4, God “appointed” a plant to grow, a worm to destroy the plant, and even a scorching east wind, all to teach Jonah about God’s mercy and pity on the lost people of Nineveh.
2. What about when Abraham was to sacrifice Isaac, and God provided a ram instead?
Genesis 22:14 “Yahweh will provide.”
3. What about Joseph’s descent into Egypt and the betrayal of his family?
Genesis 50:20 “As for you, you meant evil against me, but God meant it for good in order to do what has happened on this day, to keep many people alive.”
4. Elijah, Esther, even the cross itself!
Acts 2:23 “this Man, delivered over by the predetermined plan and foreknowledge of God, you nailed to a cross by the hands of lawless men and put Him to death.”
v. When scripture tells us to trust in the Lord, know that God truly is in control, though we do not always see it, nor understand it.
b. The Triumphant Entry into Jerusalem
i. Many place their clothes on the road and branches, all before Jesus as He rides this colt
ii. John 12:13 mentions these were palm branches
iii. 2 Kings 9:12-13 shows there was a tradition to place garments beneath the feet of a king so he would not have to walk on the bare steps
iv. And many were praising Him and crying out Hosanna!
1. What is Hosanna?
Psalm 118:25 tells us plainly what the Hebrew word, “O [please] Yahweh, save [deliver, bring salvation]! O [please] Yahweh, succeed!”
And in the following verse, Psalm 118:26a “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of Yahweh…”
v. Jesus enters Jerusalem, goes straight to the temple, looks around, but the hour is late, so He does not stay.
c. Jesus then returns to Bethany with the twelve
i. Which is probably where He stayed for the week of Passover
ii. This was the house of Mary, Martha, and Lazarus
John 12:1-2 “Jesus, therefore, six days before the Passover, came to Bethany where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. 2 So they made Him a supper there, and Martha was serving; and Lazarus was one of those reclining at the table with Him.”
II. OBSERVATIONS
a. Fulfillment of Prophecy
i. Matthew explains that this all took place to fulfill the prophecy of Zechariah 9:9 in Matthew 21:4-5
b. The Nature of the Kingdom
i. Remember, we spoke about this many sermons ago, Jesus was establishing the spiritual kingdom, but later, at the second coming, would bring the physical kingdom!
Mark 11:10 “Blessed is the coming kingdom of our father David; Hosanna in the highest!”
John 12:13b “…began to shout, “Hosanna! Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Yahweh, even the King of Israel.”
ii. Remember, earlier, some tried to force Jesus to become king, but He refused
John 6:15 “So Jesus, knowing that they were going to come and take Him by force to make Him king, withdrew again to the mountain by Himself alone.”
iii. Many believed and were looking for the Messiah to be a physical king, but Jesus made it clear that His kingdom was not of this world, but a spiritual kingdom.
1. He told the Pharisees in Luke 17:20-21
2. He told Pilate in John 18:36
iv. Paul also had made it clear that the kingdom was spiritual and not physical
Romans 14:17 “for the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.”
1 Corinthians 15:50 “Now I say this, brothers, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the corruptible inherit the incorruptible.”
v. The fact that Jesus chose a lowly colt to ride in on indicates the spiritual nature of His kingdom.
1. Typically, kings would ride a strong horse, symbolizing war and power
2. But a donkey symbolized peace, befitting the nature of His kingdom.
3. Isaiah 9:6 Jesus, the Prince of Peace.
c. Praise of the crowd
i. The joy, anticipation, praise, and singing out for the Lord
ii. Today, we join in the praise of Christ every day!
iii. And we look forward to praising Jesus when He returns, when we will be glorified together with Him!
CONCLUSION
That will be a triumphal entry when Jesus returns! Not as the lamb to the slaughter offering Himself for our sin as He did when He first came, but to give eternal salvation for those who believe!
Hebrews 9:27b-28 “it is appointed for men to die once and after this comes judgment, 28 so Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.”
FINAL THOUGHT
That will be a DAY OF SALVATION for those who eagerly await Him.
For others, it will be a DAY OF CONDEMNATION.
2 Thessalonians 1:5-10 “This is a plain indication of God’s righteous judgment so that you will be considered worthy of the kingdom of God, for which indeed you are suffering. 6 Since it is right for God to repay with affliction those who afflict you, 7 and to give rest to you who are afflicted and to us as well at the revelation of the Lord Jesus from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, 8 executing vengeance on those who do not know God and to those who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus. 9 These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Yahweh and from the glory of His might, 10 when He comes to be glorified in His saints on that day, and to be marveled at among all who have believed…”
These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction.
As we await His “triumphal entry” at the last day, let us faithfully serve Him today in His spiritual kingdom of righteousness, joy, and peace, until the physical kingdom arrives!
