SERMON INTRODUCTION

We began a couple weeks ago looking at the major peaks of events throughout scripture.

SCRIPTURE READING

Genesis 1:24-31

“And God said, “Let the land produce living creatures according to their kinds: the livestock, the creatures that move along the ground, and the wild animals, each according to its kind.” And it was so. 25 God made the wild animals according to their kinds, the livestock according to their kinds, and all the creatures that move along the ground according to their kinds. And God saw that it was good.

26 Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals,[a] and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.

28 God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

29 Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food. 30 And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.

31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

INTRODUCTION

Up to this point we have seen;

Day 1 – God creates the heavens and the earth and separates light from dark and creates all of the Universal Natural Laws, such as thermodynamics, time, gravity, etc.

Day 2 – God separates water from the sky, prepares the layer above for the coming flood, creates a vault or void, probably of CO2 for the vegetation He will create on Day 3

Day 3 – God separates the dry land from the water so man and land creatures will have somewhere to live, and then causes the vegetation and trees upon that land, first “life” giving them seeds and fruit, a way to “reproduce”

Day 4 – God lights all the suns in the universe, sets the earths sun and moon in the perfect orbits to control the earths temp and tides to cycle the air and allow for the conditions needed to support life of man and animals.

Day 5 – Now that the CO2 has been converted into oxygen by the trees and vegetation created on Day 3, the first “creatures” can be created! Birds fill the air, and creatures fill the seas

Day 6 – Now God will create creatures on land and mankind

                  I.            ACCORDING TO THEIR KIND

a.      Let the land produce living creatures according to their kind

                                                                         i.      Livestock, according to their kind

ii.      Creatures that move along the ground (insects), according to their kind

iii.      Wild animals, according to their kind

iv.      “each according to its kind”

ILLUSTRATION: The various birds and their mating rituals

There are currently between 9,000-10,000 types of birds

Genetically speaking, there are approximately 363 different species they all come from

Variations that have developed through “survival of the fittest”, or “natural selection”

These birds have their own mating rituals which can be fascinating

And yet, they only produce more birds, through because of natural selection and survival of the fittest we do witness variations among them. Maybe even more are to come?

But as God says, according to their kind…

None of these 10,000 types of birds will ever give birth to a mouse, or a monkey.

b.     This removes the idea of evolution

                                                                         i.      New species that are NOTHING like their parents are a scientific impossibility

ii.      Would you buy an apple tree if you wanted grapes?

iii.      Would you breed dogs if you wanted a cat?

                                                                    iv.      It IS that ridiculous

c.      Anomalies mutations and other strangeness’s

                                                                         i.      Remember, we live in a sin-filled fallen world

ii.      It is now filled with death and disease

iii.      Mutations, and other strange things happen because of this

iv.      There are many examples of things going bad with offspring of creatures, odd deformities in man and beast, however, they will (if allowed to by the Universal Natural Laws set in place by God) reproduce offspring “of their own kind”

II.            IN THE LIKENESS OF GOD

a.      The God (singular) said

                                                                         i.      Let US (plural/Trinity) make “mankind” in our likeness

                                                                      ii.      Father – Genesis 1:1

                                                                   iii.      Son – John 1:1

iv.      Holy Spirit – Genesis 1:2

b.     Likeness / Image

                                                                         i.      Verse 26b “…So that they may RULE over the fish, birds, livestock and wild animals, and insects”

c.      So, God created them Male and Female

                                                                         i.      Is this what God means by His image?

ii.      No.  This was a biological division created for the sole purpose of procreation.

iii.      Verse 26b tells us that the “likeness” or image of God was that we, like Him, would “rule” over creation.

iv.      Verse 28 “God blessed them and said to them, “Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground.”

III.            THE WORLD FILLED WITH VEGETARIANS

a.      Then God Said

                                                                         i.      Verse 29 “Then God said, “I give you every seed-bearing plant on the face of the whole earth and every tree that has fruit with seed in it. They will be yours for food.”

b.     Then God said

                                                                         i.      Verse 30 “And to all the beasts of the earth and all the birds in the sky and all the creatures that move along the ground—everything that has the breath of life in it—I give every green plant for food.” And it was so.”

c.      God saw all He had made

                                                                         i.      God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.

            IV.            The Day of Rest

a.      Genesis 2 and the Seventh Day

                                                                         i.      We see the first three verses of Chapter 2 finishing all of creation with the seventh day

ii.      When they added the Chapters and Verse numbers to the bible in the 13th century, I believe they should have left these two verses in Chapter 1 of Genesis.

iii.      Obviously the seventh day is part of the creation week.

iv.      I believe they moved it to try and tie Chapter 2 into 1 because the next verses about Adam and Eve and the garden took place during Creation week, Somewhere after the 4th day, but before the 7th

                                                                       v.      I personally believe it took place on the Sixth Day, after God created Adam and the Garden, but before He created “mankind”

b.     The Heavens and Earth were completed in their vast array

                                                                         i.      This note lets us know that all of creation is finished, God had created everything that ever will be created.

ii.      This also lets us in on the fact that what they are about to talk about in Chapter 2 takes place during this creation week.

c.      By the Seventh Day

                                                                         i.      God finished the work He had been doing

ii.      So, on the seventh day He rested from all His work

iii.      Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy because on it he rested from all of the work of creating that he had done

CONCLUSION –

So, we see that by the 6th day during the creation week, which is literal days of 24 hours, God has completed creating everything He is going to create.

But where’s Adam and Eve? What about the Garden of Eden and the tree of life, or the tree of knowledge of good and evil?

They too have been created because the week of creation is finished, and God is going to rest on day 7

So, next week we will look at Genesis chapter 2 where we will take a small step back into the week of creation to talk about Adam and Eve and the Garden of Eden

Next week we will look into Adam and Eve
