SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Mark 14:17-26 “And when it was evening [Thursday after sunset] He *came with the twelve. 18 And as they were reclining at the table and eating, Jesus said,
“Truly I say to you that one of you will betray Me—the one who is eating with Me.”
19 They began to be grieved and to say to Him one by one, “Surely not I?” 20 And He said to them, “It is one of the twelve, the one who dips with Me in the bowl. 21 For the Son of Man is to go just as it is written of Him; but woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
22 And while they were eating, He took some bread, and after a blessing, He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them,
“This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 And after singing a hymn, they went out to the Mount of Olives.”
INTRODUCTION - It is now Thursday Evening of the week of Passover.
§ Sunday: Triumphal Entry

§ Thursday daytime: Preparations for Passover
o Thursday evening after sunset: Jesus eats the Passover meal with the Twelve, institutes the Lord’s Supper (TODAY’S MESSAGE)
o Late Thursday night: Gethsemane, betrayal, arrest, Jewish hearings
§ Friday morning: Jesus before Pilate
o Friday: Crucifixion and death
o Friday before sunset: Burial
Last week we examined the scriptures and Jesus foretelling once again that He would be betrayed. As each of the disciples asks, “Lord, is it me?” Judas asks, “Is it I, Rabbi?”
This reveals that Judas only saw Jesus as a teacher, and nothing more. His love for money drove him, and we read in scripture that Satan had possessed him just before Jesus tells him to go do what he must.
Notice, though Judas was possessed, Jesus still holds Judas accountable for his actions, saying in the verse today, “…woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been good for that man if he had not been born.”
You may ask, if Judas was possessed by Satan, how is it his fault? Didn’t the devil make him do it?
Though Judas was possessed by Satan himself, there was a long process before this took place.
Judas revealed his love for money, even more than Jesus, earlier in the book of Mark when Mary broke the alabaster bottle of perfume over Jesus. Judas had already walked with Jesus for three and a half years, listening to teaching, taking part in the ministry of Jesus, but still loving money more than anything.
By the Last Supper, Judas had already sought out the chief priests to sell out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. Then returned to sit and have supper with the one he had already betrayed.
Judas had already turned from Jesus, refused to recognize Jesus as Lord, and betrayed him by the time they sat together for the Passover. Without Jesus, you are free for the taking if Satan can find a purpose for you, and he did for Judas in this case…possessing Judas to ensure Judas would carry out his plan of betraying the Lord.
We spoke last week about Jesus dipping bread and handing it to Judas, the one who would betray Him.
Judas is still at the table when Jesus institutes communion, blessing and breaking bread, and presenting the cup of wine, and Judas partakes! Jesus Himself hands him bread after blessing it and breaking it.
THIS IS IMPORTANT.
Why?
Let’s look at how Jesus institutes communion, and how Paul later describes it so that we can understand what communion is, and is not.
I. THE PASSOVER AS INSTITUTED BY JESUS
a. The Bread and the Cup
i. Mark 14:22 reveals the bread was unleavened, which we know from Scripture, leaven represents sin, so unleavened bread represents the sinlessness of Jesus.
ii. Jesus says in this verse, “Take it; this is My body.”
Luke 22:19 “And when He had taken some bread and given thanks, He broke it and gave it to them, saying, ‘This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.’”
iii. Mark 14:22-23 reveals that the cup of wine, which we know from Scripture, represents the blood of Christ.
iv. Jesus says in the verse, “This is my blood…”
Matthew 26:27-28 “‘Drink from it, all of you; for this is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for forgiveness of sins.’”
Mark 14:23-24 “And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. And He said to them, ‘This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many.’”
Luke 22:20 “And in the same way He took the cup after they had eaten, saying, ‘This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.’”
v. Important things to remember here;
1. Do this in remembrance of me. (Luke 22:19)
2. My blood of the covenant, poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
3. This cup which is poured out for you is the new covenant in My blood.
b. The false doctrine of transubstantiation
i. Roman Catholic Church, Eastern Catholic Churches, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, some Anglicans and Episcopalians (although the 39 Articles explicitly reject transubstantiation as an Anglican doctrine) believe that the bread and wine literally turn into the body and blood of Jesus Christ.
ii. Most Baptists, Methodists, Presbyterians, Reformed churches, Pentecostal, Churches of Christ, and most evangelical churches reject transubstantiation, though they differ significantly on what Christ's presence in Communion means.
1. Though I personally knew a man who was a Methodist and firmly believed in transubstantiation.
iii. We know this to be a false doctrine for many reasons
1. Paul says after consecration in I Corinthians 11:23-26 “as often as you eat this bread…”
He also refers to it again as bread in I Corinthians 11:27-28 “Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord. But a man must test himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup.”
2. Jesus Himself explicitly says in Luke 22:19 “…do this in remembrance of Me.”
3. Just as Paul reminds us in I Corinthians 11:26 “For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.”
4. It is clear in Scripture that the Lord’s Supper, communion, is a MEMORIAL of REMEMBRANCE.
c. Not to mention, Christ’s sacrifice occurred ONCE
i. Saying the bread and wine literally, magically, transform into the real body and blood is to say Christ’s body is broken as a sacrifice, and His blood spilled, again and again…
Hebrews 9:26 “But now once at the consummation of the ages He has been manifested to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself.”
Hebrews 9:28 “So Christ also, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time for salvation without reference to sin, to those who eagerly await Him.”
Hebrews 10:10 “By this will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.”
ii. What is the language scripture is using here?
1. Once, once for all, one sacrifice, for all time, one offering.
Let us not forget that the BODY of Christ ascended into heaven!
Acts 1:9; Acts 3:20-21
Christ’s resurrected physical body is in heaven, sitting at the right hand of the Father, awaiting His return!
Communion is a symbolic memorial. Not a magic trick or the false doctrine of transubstantiation, and guess what? As a symbolic memorial…communion does not “save you,” nor does it in itself “remove your sin.”
It is a symbolic memorial of the sacrifice of the perfect Lamb of God, Jesus Christ, whose shed blood purchased the New Covenant, through which your sins are forgiven.
Do you know how we know the act of taking Communion does not save you or remove your sin?
Firstly, because we see in Scripture it is a symbolic memorial for the one who does save and remove sin, and secondly, because Judas took communion with Jesus and the disciples just before he was possessed by Satan.
II. THE PASSOVER DESCRIBED BY PAUL
a. Paul describes Communion, the Last Supper, as;
i. A memorial – I Corinthians 11:23-25
1. Of His body, whose death makes the new covenant possible (Hebrews 9:16)
2. Of His blood, which was shed for the remission of sins (Matthew 26:28; Ephesians 1:7)
ii. As a proclamation – I Corinthians 11:26
1. Of faith proclaiming the Lord’s death
2. Of faith in the certainty of His return
iii. As a communion – I Corinthians 10:16-17
1. Sharing in the blood of Christ
2. Sharing in the Body of Christ
iv. And how we observe it!
1. With reverence “in a worthy manner”
2. With self-examination “let each examine themselves”
3. And along with other Christians “wait for one another”
CONCLUSION
The warning Paul does give us about partaking in the memorial of Christ’s atoning sacrifice in communion is found in I Corinthians 11:27-32
“ Therefore whoever eats the bread or drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.
28 But a man must test himself, and in so doing he is to eat of the bread and drink of the cup. 29 For he who eats and drinks, eats and drinks judgment to himself if he does not judge the body rightly.
30 For this reason many among you are weak and sick, and a number are dead.
31 But if we judged ourselves rightly, we would not be judged. 32 But when we are judged, we are disciplined by the Lord so that we will not be condemned along with the world.”
FINAL THOUGHT
Jesus is our Passover, sacrificed for us (I Corinthians 5:7)
The Jews show gratitude for their deliverance from Egypt by observing the Passover. Do we show our gratitude for our deliverance from the bondage of sin by faithfully observing the Lord’s Supper?
Think about this during the week in prayer, asking God to reveal to you what is standing between you and Him. He promises that if you submit to Him, He will give you the Holy Spirit, and through Him you shall have all you need to grow in the Lord, operate as a light in His name, and have the fruits of the Holy Spirit, one of which is the fruit of self-control.
