INTRODUCTION

We left off last week talking about Joseph revealing his identity to his brothers.

By the scriptural account, they had confessed and accepted responsibility for their actions and were truly repentant, shown by Judah’s willingness to stay as a slave in place of Benjamin.

Joseph tells them to return to Canaan, and retrieve, not just his father, but the entire household and bring them to Egypt. Both Joseph, as well as the Pharaoh, wanted to bless Joseph's family and protect them during the worldwide famine.

They were given the land of Goshen, but first, the entire family had to return with Jacob.

If you recall, Jacob was renewed when he heard Joseph was still alive, and it lifted his spirit.

The Pharaoh ensured the family had plenty of silver and wagons for comfortable travel.

Today we will look at the family settling in. In Genesis 46 we are told there were over 70 family members traveling to Goshen from Canaan.

SCRIPTURE READING

Genesis 46; 47

“So Israel set out with all that was his, and when he reached Beersheba, he offered sacrifices to the God of his father Isaac.

And God spoke to Israel in a vision at night and said, “Jacob! Jacob!”

“Here I am,” he replied.

“I am God, the God of your father,” he said. “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there. I will go down to Egypt with you, and I will surely bring you back again. And Joseph’s own hand will close your eyes.”

    I.            JACOB IS REMINDED OF THE ABRAHAMIC COVENANT IN GENESIS 46

a.      Passed on once more

                                              i.      God made the covenant with Abraham in Genesis 12; 15

ii.      Passed to Isaac in Genesis 24

iii.      Passed to Jacob in Genesis 28

1.      Jacob reminded in Genesis 46

iv.      God’s covenant for the building of a nation and the eventual redemption of humankind is moving forward and will be in the hands of Joseph

b.     We are also reminded of Jacob’s imperfections in these verses

                                              i.      We see various times both Israel and Jacob used

ii.      This reveals the struggle between the faith Israel has and the doubt and fear that Jacob has, showing his humanity.

iii.      When God speaks to him in 46:2, He says, “Jacob! Jacob!” and in verse 3, “Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt…”

iv.      Israel’s faith in God was renewed when he realized his son Joseph was still alive

                                            v.      However, Jacob was still afraid to go to Egypt.

c.      The family line is recorded

                                              i.      This takes place for a couple of reasons. Firstly, it is a record of all those who are included in the covenant with God.

ii.      Secondly, it records all the names for tracking lineage later

iii.      We see who belongs to who, and that a couple of them had passed away, as well as a record of those who took Canaanite women as wives, which Jacob, just as his father, frowned upon.

II.            WHEN THEY ARRIVE AT GOSHEN THERE IS A REUNION

a.      Jacob and Joseph once again reunite

                                              i.      Obviously, this would be a great event, full of joy.

ii.      Not only are they meeting with Joseph who had been missing and presumed dead for 20 years, but he has grown in power and respect and is going to save the entire family from the global famine!

iii.      Jacob exclaims in verse 30, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen for myself that you are still alive.”

b.     Joseph explains Pharoah etiquette and what they are to answer when questioned

                                              i.      Even though Joseph is second in command of all of Egypt, there is still etiquette and a formal way of presenting yourself and speaking to the Pharaoh.

ii.      Joseph explains how they are to speak and act

c.      Then Joseph speaks to Pharaoh first

                                              i.      Joseph explains that his family is a long line of shepherds

ii.      Pharoah asked if any of them had a special ability and would oversee the Pharoah’s own livestock.

III.            THEY WERE GIVEN LAND, PROTECTION, FOOD, AN OPPORTUNITY TO GROW

a.      The Famine still had approximately five more years to go

                                              i.      And just as God promised in His covenant, they would be fruitful, and many in nations, and from them the savior would be born!

b.     The covenant was still moving forward

                                              i.      Many times, in the book of Genesis when God is speaking of His promises and covenant, He states, “I WILL,” and nothing will change that, regardless of outward circumstances, or how things may appear.

ii.      Isaiah 55:11 “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”

c.      All these blessings may seem like they came from Joseph and the Pharaoh, but they were directly orchestrated by the hand of God for His Will

                                              i.      Man was given free will during creation

1.      We could choose to be obedient to the Word (Leave the fruit)

2.      We could choose to be disobedient to the Word (eat of the fruit)

ii.      Regardless of the fact we have free will, God’s will is going to be done.

iii.      Proverbs 19:21 “Many are the plans in the mind of a man, but it is the purpose of the Lord that will stand.”

iv.      God knew that Josephs's brothers wanted to kill him, so God prepared the caravan of slave traders ahead of time to cross paths at the right moment.

                                            v.      Job 42:2 “I know that you can do all things, and that no purpose of yours can be thwarted.”

CONCLUSION –

All that is being done for God’s people during this global famine has been orchestrated and comes by God’s Hand alone.

James 1:17 “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.”

It is for this reason when Jacob loses his faith, but God reveals His faithfulness once more, Jacob again is called Israel.

Therefore we must be thankful, grateful, mindful of the blessings in our life, remembering all good things are by God’s hand, and this gratitude will increase our faith.

Next week we will look at Joseph and the continuing worldwide famine.
