INTRODUCTION
Now that the Lord has instructed Moses on everything from the 10 commands, civil law, ceremonial law, the instructions for building the Ark of the Covenant as well as the entire Tabernacle and everything within it, and last week, who would be the high priest, and priests, what they would wear and what they would do, now He will give Moses the people to do it.
Imagine the Lord instructing you on all of this, and you are trying to figure out how you’re going to get it all done. However, Moses had his job, and it was not sewing garments for the priests.
There is nothing wrong with sewing garments. It is still serving God. But it is, however, essential to know which part you play because THAT is the part God equipped you for.
Ephesians 4:1-12
“Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, exhort you to walk worthy of the calling with which you have been called, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, being diligent to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.
There is one body and one Spirit, just as also you were called in one hope of your calling; one Lord, one faith, one baptism; one God and Father of all who is over all and through all and in all.
But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift. Therefore it says, “WHEN HE ASCENDED ON HIGH, HE LED CAPTIVE A HOST OF CAPTIVES, And HE GAVE GIFTS TO MEN.”
(Now this expression, “He ascended,” what does it mean except that He also descended into the lower parts of the earth? He who descended is Himself also He who ascended far above all the heavens, so that He might fill all things.)
And He Himself gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ…”
As it was in the beginning, so it is now.
Today we look at the Calling & Equipping of God
SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 31:1-11 (Legacy Standard Bible)
“And Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, “See, I have called by name Bezalel, the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
“And I have filled him with the Spirit of God in Wisdom, in discernment, in knowledge, and in all kinds of craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs for work in gold, in silver, and in bronze, and in the cutting of stones for settings, and in the carving of wood, in order for him to work in all kinds of craftsmanship.
“And behold, I Myself have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of
Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all who are wise at heart
I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded you: the tent
of meeting, and the ark of testimony, and the mercy seat upon it, and all the
furniture of the tent, the table also and its utensils, and the pure gold
lampstand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, the altar of burnt
offering also with all its utensils, and the laver and its stand, the woven
garments as well, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments
of his sons, with which to minister as priests; the anointing oil also, and the
fragrant incense for the holy place, they shall make them according to all that
I have commanded you.”
TODAY'S MESSAGE
I. I HAVE CALLED BEZALEL BY NAME AND FILLED HIM WITH THE SPIRIT OF GOD
a. God called Bezalel, the son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah
i. Note the figurative speech “called”
ii. Note, the literal meaning, Bezalel, by name
iii. Not just any Bezalel, but the son of Uri, grandson of Hur, of the tribe of Judah
b. God filled him with the Spirit of God
i. Some argue that receiving the Spirit of God at Salvation is the only Spirit we receive from God. First, however, we need to remember a few things about God’s Holy Spirit.
1. Jesus says in John 3:8, “The wind blows where it wishes and you hear its sound, but do not know where it comes from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit.”
a. You do not control the Spirit of God
2. When the Apostles received the Holy Spirit at Pentecost in Acts 2:2, “And suddenly there came from heaven a noise like a violent rushing wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.”
a. They were filled with the Holy Spirit
3. We receive the Spirit at Salvation Acts 2:38 “And Peter said to them, “Repent, and each of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins; and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.”
4. However, what is generally called “baptism of the Holy Spirit,” or “filling of the Holy Spirit,” is not a different spirit, but a filling just as we read in Exodus, giving specific gifts in the particular way you serve the Lord.
a. We know this is separate and different from being saved and receiving the Holy Spirit because believers are told to “seek the gifts they desire.” So they already have the Holy Spirit.
b. Paul explains how they differ in I Corinthians 12:1-11 “Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant. You know that when you were pagans, you were being led astray to the mute idols, however you were led. Therefore I make known to you that no one speaking by the Spirit of God says, “Jesus is accursed,” and no one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit. And there are varieties of ministries, and the same Lord. And there are varieties of workings, but the same God who works everything in everyone. But to each one is given the manifestation of the Spirit for what is profitable. For to one is given the word of Wisdom through the Spirit, and to another the word of knowledge according to the same Spirit; to someone else faith by the same Spirit, and to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, and to another the workings of miracles, and to another prophecy, and to another the distinguishing of spirits, to someone else various kinds of tongues, and to another the translation of tongues. But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually just as He wills.”
c. So how does a Saved person with the Spirit of God from Salvation get Spiritual Gifts (or the filling of the Spirit, or baptism of the Spirit?)
d. In I Corinthians 14 Paul says “earnestly desire spiritual gifts” in verse 1, speaking to SAVED Christians.
e. In verse 12 “So also you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, seek to abound for the edification of the church.”
f. So those who are saved and have the Spirit of God can earnestly desire and be zealous for Spiritual Gifts, seeking them for the church's edification.
i. They already have the Spirit of God from Salvation
ii. They want a “filling” or “baptism” of the Holy Spirit for gifts.
1. Not a different Spirit
2. But “more” of the One Holy Spirit
g. Therefore, the use of the term “baptism or filling of the Holy Spirit.”
ii. In Wisdom – What to do with knowledge and experience
iii. Discernment – To know God’s Will spiritually on a matter
iv. Knowledge – Spiritual education that is simply “given” by the Spirit of God
v. All kinds of craftsmanship – The ability to use the discernment, knowledge, and Wisdom from God’s Spirit to create and build what He desires.
c. Very specific
i. Specifically called, empowered explicitly by God’s Holy Spirit for a specific task given by God
II. AND I HAVE APPOINTED OHOLIAB AND WHO WHO ARE WISE AT HEART I PUT WISDOM
a. Oholiab, son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan
i. Specifically called
b. And in the hearts of all who are wise (HEB: skillful or experienced), I have put Wisdom (skill)
i. All who are wise – the Hebrew word here meaning those who are already somewhat skillful or experienced were given God’s Spiritual Gift of Wisdom
ii. In other words, God gave Spiritually powered skills to those who already had some skill
c. Called by God and given the ability to fulfill their calling
i. They, like Moses, Aaron, and his sons, Bezalel, are all specifically “called by God” for a specific duty
ii. God then empowers them through the Spirit of God to perform that duty to which God called them
iii. God does not call you and say, “figure it out.”
iv. God calls AND equips
Ephesians 4:11-12 “And He Himself gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of service, to the building up of the body of Christ,”
1 Peter 4:10 “As each one has received a gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God—"
III. WHAT THIS MEANS FOR US TODAY
a. God calls you by name
i. God calls each one of us BY NAME
ii. Specifically, for a specific purpose
iii. What are some of the purposes of God?
1. Open your mouth for the mute, For the justice of all those passing away. Open your mouth, judge righteously, And render justice to the afflicted and needy. – Proverbs 31:8-9
2. Learn to do good; Seek justice, Reprove the ruthless, Execute justice for the orphan, Plead for the widow. – Isaiah 1:17
3. And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. – Mark 16:15
I Corinthians 7:17 “…each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them.”
b. God fills you with the Spirit of God and Skills
i. If you ever feel you cannot fulfill your calling, remember you have the Spirit of God, which works in you from Salvation, and you can desire and seek through prayer the Gifts of the Holy Spirit
ii. The baptism, or filling of God’s Spirit will enable you to accomplish whatever it is God has called you to!
iii. Jesus says in Matthew 17:20, “..And He said to them, “Because of your little faith; for truly I say to you, if you have faith the size of a mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move; and nothing will be impossible to you.”
1. Before you go out and try to move mountains with your faith, please recognize the figurative speech here.
2. Jesus said this to the disciples because they could not cast a demon out.
3. So the “mountain” is symbolic of anything that “appears too great for you to accomplish for the Lord.”
iv. That being said, if God calls you explicitly to move a literal mountain, you will be able to accomplish that task.
c. So you can fulfill what He has instructed you to do
i. Because he who calls also equips.
CONCLUSION
Those whom God calls, He fills and gives the ability to fulfill His instructions through the power of the Holy Spirit.
You receive access to this at Salvation, and you can “desire & seek” this filling, baptism, and overflowing of God’s Holy Spirit in the form of gifts equipping you to serve Him and fulfill your specific calling by God.
He calls us by Name, Fills us with the Spirit of God, and Equips us for Service
