Now the Lord is going to tell Moses about who His Priests would be, and how they are to be “set apart,” which, if you remember last weeks sermon, is one of the definitions of “holy.”
As stated by the Lord in Exodus 20:1b “… set them apart as holy to minister as priests to Me…”
So we will take a look at Exodus 29:1-9 today, and see what the Lord reveals to Moses about the newly established priesthood that would minister to God, serve as priests and maintain the people’s inclusion in the Covenant that He was establishing, thus fulfilling the promise to Abraham, and building the foundation of the New Covenant to include all people through Jesus and His work at the cross.
This work, foreshadowed, foretold, and represented by the building, design and operation of the Tabernacle.
Today we examine those Set Aside to Minister to the Lord as Priests
SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 29:1-9 (Legacy Standard Bible)
“Now this is what you shall do to them to set them apart as holy to minister as priests to Me: take one bull from the herd and two rams without blemish, and unleavened bread and unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil; you shall make them of fine wheat flour.
And you shall put them in one basket and bring them near in the basket along with the bull and the two rams.
Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons near to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water.
And you shall take the garments, and put on Aaron the tunic and the robe of the ephod and the ephod and the breastpiece, and gird him with the skillfully woven band of the ephod; and you shall set the turban on his head and put the holy crown on the turban.
Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him.
And you shall bring his sons near and put tunics on them.
You shall gird them with sashes, Aaron and his sons, and bind caps on
them, and they shall have the priesthood by a perpetual statute. So you shall
ordain Aaron and his sons.”
TODAY'S MESSAGE
I. SET THEM APART AS HOLY
a. What is holy?
i. Last week we talked about 2 basic definitions
1. Set apart, different
2. Without sin, sinless
ii. The Hebrew word means
1. Singled out, consecrated FOR
2. Removed from common use
3. Subject to special treatment
4. Faithful
5. Also an attribute to people and objects
b. To minister as priests to Me
i. Usage here refers to consecration, set apart, removed from common to be faithful and subject to special (as in unique) treatment.
1. Special here means unique
2. They would be set apart to perform certain functions FOR the Lord
3. Singled out from common people to serve in a unique way
4. Performing tasks for the Lord to perpetuate the Covenant that the Lord was establishing with the Hebrews
ii. Minister as Priests to Me (in Hebrew)
1. Minister, meaning One who serves, as distinguished from the master
2. An attendant to one of superior rank
a. Used in Exodus 33:11 (Joshua the servant of Moses)
b. As well as to priests and Levite's (Jeremiah 33:21; Ezekiel 44:11)
3. Minister is really more of what someone does rather than a title
a. Serve
b. Act as priest
c. Make to happen
d. Work
e. Service which is rendered
c. This foreshadows the priesthood of the New Covenant
i. 1 Peter 2:5-10 “you also, as living stones, are being built up as a spiritual house for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
For this is contained in Scripture: “BEHOLD, I LAY IN ZION A CHOICE STONE, A PRECIOUS CORNER stone, AND HE WHO BELIEVES UPON HIM WILL NOT BE PUT TO SHAME.”
This precious value, then, is for you who believe; but for those who disbelieve, “THE STONE WHICH THE BUILDERS REJECTED, THIS BECAME THE VERY CORNER stone,” and, “A STONE OF STUMBLING AND A ROCK OF OFFENSE.” They stumble because they are disobedient to the word, and to this stumbling they were also appointed.
But you are A CHOSEN FAMILY, A royal PRIESTHOOD, A HOLY NATION, A PEOPLE FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION, so that you may proclaim the excellencies of Him who has called you out of darkness into His marvelous light;
for you once were NOT A PEOPLE, but now you are THE PEOPLE OF GOD; you had NOT RECEIVED MERCY, but now you have RECEIVED MERCY.”
1. All believers are considered as part of the priesthood
ii. And who is our high priest?
1. Hebrews 4:14-16 “Therefore, since we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us take hold of our confession. For we do not have a high priest who cannot sympathize with our weaknesses, but One who has been tempted in all things like we are, yet without sin. Therefore let us draw near with confidence to the throne of grace, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”
II. PREPARE THEM AND ORDAIN THEM
a. The offerings
i. One Bull without blemish (symbolic of the humanity/work of Christ)
ii. Two Rams without blemish (symbolic of His Kingly Power)
1. Ram is a male sheep (Jesus being male)
2. One of the Cherubim faces was a ram
a. The four faces representative of Christ
iii. Unleavened bread and cakes (symbolized the perfect, sinless life of Christ)
1. John 6 (Jesus is bread from Heaven)
2. Leviticus 23 (leaven typified sin)
iv. The oil (typified the Holy Spirit which was upon Him without measure)
1. John 3:34
v. Wheat flour (the metaphor of the grain of wheat represented death in the pursuit of salvation and entering the Kingdom of Heaven)
1. Wheat, being harvested (death) and crushed into flour, then turned into bread (rebirth) which gives life (eating/feeding)
b. The entrance of the “Tent of Meeting” (Tabernacle)
i. Tent of meeting, whom? God
ii. What is at the entrance? The Altar of burnt sacrifice
iii. And at the entrance of the Holy Place (which represents the Church/Body of Christ)?
1. The Basin for ceremonial washing to make you worthy to enter
c. The Washing near the doorway of the Tabernacle
i. Vs 4 “Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons near to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water.”
ii. Symbolic of baptism of the Holy Spirit to enter the Body of Christ
III. MAKE FOR THEM GARMENTS (vs 5-9)
a. Now they are ready for the garments for Aaron (the High priest)
i. A tunic
ii. The robe of ephod
iii. The ephod & breastplate
iv. Girded with the skillfully woven band of the ephod
v. A turban on his head
vi. A crown upon the turban
b. The Anointing
i. Vs 7 “Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him.”
ii. The sons of Aaron (priests) wear tunics
iii. See the difference between the high spriest and the priest?
1. Normal priests get a tunic
2. The High Priest is adorned
iv. Knowing we are all in the priesthood, and Jesus is our High Priest, this makes perfect sense.
1. A tunic – All priests have this white garment
2. Everything else are types of Christ.
a. His atoning
b. Intercessory
c. Mediator work
d. Topped off by placing the Holy Crown upon his head
v. It marked the royal character of the High Priest
vi. This is a type of Christ in the Mosaic Law
Exodus 29:9 “You shall gird them with sashes, Aaron and his sons, and bind caps on them, and they shall have the priesthood by a perpetual statute. So you shall ordain Aaron and his sons.”
c. Ordination
i. With the tunics, gird them with sashes, bind their caps on them, and they shall have the priesthood by a perpetual statute.
1. The Literal Hebrew for the English word perpetual used in this verse means “Age-lasting”
2. In other words, This priesthood would last throughout the “AGE”
3. The Levite's are no longer the priests, Believer’s in the New Covenant are
4. Aaron is no longer the High Priest, Jesus Christ is
ii. They will be “ordained”
1. The Hebrew word which was replaced with the English word “ordained” is actually a verb, not a title or honor
2. The Hebrew word used means to “be full” or “fill”
iii. So what will these priests be filled with?
1. Used also as “her that is with child”
iv. This is stating that God is putting His Holy Spirit “inside” the Aaron and his sons to act as priests.
CONCLUSION
Who are the priests according to the New Covenant? Believers
Who is the High Priest in the New Covenant? Christ
They too are to be “set apart as holy” Different from others. Separate from the world.
What is the “washing” at the doorway of the “Tent of Meeting” (Tabernacle) Baptism of God’s Spirit.
What does “ordained” mean?
We are “filled” with or “full of” God’s Holy Spirit
They would be Levite and Minister to the Lord as His Priest’s
