ANNOUNCEMENTS
Discipleship Study is starting on Monday, August 18th, at 6:00 PM here at the church. We will have coffee and snacks. We hope this day and time works for everyone interested in coming.
This study will focus on the foundational truths of Christianity, with a particular emphasis on building faith and understanding. We have had quite a few people interested, which is great.
We also have a Baptism taking place on August 16th, next Saturday. This will be taking place earlier in the day at the beach. Anyone interested should meet here at the church at 10:00AM next Saturday morning.
The church website and Facebook page have both been updated. I have added a Bible Studies and Group Discussions section to the website, where you can find free downloads to dig deeper into the Sunday Message.
I spent the last few days turning each Gospel of Mark message in this series into Bible Studies, and I am working on making the Small Group Discussions this week. Of course, these resources are free for anyone, and you don’t have to be a member to find or download them from our website, so feel free to share them with others.
Terri has agreed to take over making the music slides for services, so we can look forward to new praise and worship music! I worked on the church PC this week to get it ready, and donated an external hard drive for all the latest files.
Over the next couple of months, we will be implementing changes to streamline our services and develop additional functions that support our Church Mission.
Since opening this church, we have reached over 280 countries around the world with the gospel, and have obtained nearly 2 million sermon downloads by preachers around the world sharing the messages with countless millions, all because this church exists and makes these tools available, and free.
OPENING
In last week’s message, we saw how, after calming the storm, Jesus calmed the possessed man, casting out his demons into neighboring swine, 2,000 of them, who immediately cast themselves into the waters and drowned.
We discussed how the healed man had no fear of Jesus. In contrast, the townspeople did, because they only understood His actions, not His identity. This misunderstanding of Jesus led them to ask Him to leave their land. Their fear to learn about Jesus caused them to miss out on Salvation itself.
We now read about Jesus returning to the other side from where He came and crowds gathering, as they usually did.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Mark 5:21-43 Jesus Heals by His Touch
“21 And when Jesus had crossed over again in the boat to the other side, a large crowd gathered around Him; and so He stayed by the seashore.
22 And one of the synagogue officials named Jairus *came up, and on seeing Him, *fell at His feet 23 and *pleaded with Him earnestly, saying, “My little daughter is at the point of death; please come, that by coming, You may lay Your hands on her, so that she will be saved and live.” 24 And He went off with him; and a large crowd was following Him and pressing in on Him.
25 And a woman—who had a hemorrhage for twelve years 26 and had endured much at the hands of many physicians, and had spent all that she had and was not helped at all, but rather had grown worse—
27 after hearing about Jesus, she came up in the crowd behind Him and touched His garment. 28 For she was saying, “If I just touch His garments, I will be saved from this.” 29 And immediately the flow of her blood was dried up; and she knew within her body that she had been healed of her affliction.
30 And immediately Jesus, perceiving in Himself that the power proceeding from Him had gone forth, turned around in the crowd and was saying, “Who touched My garments?” 31 And His disciples were saying to Him, “You see the crowd pressing in on You, and You say, ‘Who touched Me?’”
32 And He was looking around to see the woman who had done this. 33 But the woman fearing and trembling, aware of what had happened to her, came and fell down before Him and told Him the whole truth. 34 And He said to her, “Daughter, your faith has saved you; go in peace and be healed of your affliction.”
35 While He was still speaking, they *came from the house of the synagogue official, saying, “Your daughter has died; why trouble the Teacher anymore?”
36 But Jesus, overhearing what had been spoken, *said to the synagogue official, “Do not be afraid, only believe.” 37 And He allowed no one to accompany Him, except Peter and James and John the brother of James. 38 And they *came to the house of the synagogue official; and He *saw a commotion, and people loudly crying and wailing. 39 And entering in, He *said to them, “Why are you making a commotion and crying? The child has not died, but is asleep.”
40 And they began laughing at Him. But putting them all out, He *took along the child’s father and mother and His own companions, and *entered the room where the child was. 41 And taking the child by the hand, He *said to her, “Talitha kum!” (which translated means, “Little girl, I say to you, arise!”).
42 And immediately the little girl stood up and began to walk, for she was twelve years old. And immediately they were completely astounded. 43 And He gave them strict orders that no one should know about this, and He said that some food should be given to her to eat.
INTRODUCTION
The Gospel of Mark dedicates much attention to the miracles of Jesus and shows His power over Demons (Mark 1:23-28,34; Mark 5:1-20), Sickness (Mark 1:29-31,34,40-45; Mark 2:1-12; Mark 3:1-6), and even nature itself, as we read in Mark 4:35-41.
We read about two more miracles in today’s scripture reading, showing Jesus having power over disease, by healing the woman who had hemorrhaged for twelve years, and death, in raising the daughter of Jairus.
Jairus was an official of the synagogue. Let us first look at the woman who was healed by touching the garment of Jesus.
I. SHE HAD FAITH JESUS COULD HEAL HER, AND REACHED OUT
a. The Woman Touched His Garment
i. She had suffered greatly!
1. Hemorrhaging for twelve years
2. Mistreated by physicians
3. Spending all she had, only to be WORSE!
ii. Hearing Jesus was returning, she had enough faith in Him to seek Him, even if it were just to touch the hem of His garment.
1. We read that the blood dried up when she touched His cloak
2. She felt the healing take place inside of her.
3. She was healed
iii. Jesus sensed the healing power leave Him, and reassured her of what had taken place.
1. She was afraid to come forward at first, but fell at His feet and confessed everything.
2. Jesus told her that it was her faith that made her well.
Her faith in Jesus and His abilities drove her to seek Him out. And just as Jesus promises, “Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you.”
In each statement by Jesus, we have a responsibility. We must Ask, Seek, Knock…we must make the effort to reach out our hand to Jesus.
An unasked question cannot be answered.
You cannot find what you do not seek.
If you don’t knock, who will open the door?
Take that step to express and acknowledge your faith in Jesus, and He will respond!
b. Are we willing to have faith and seek as she did?
i. We saw last week that the townsfolk were afraid to approach Jesus
1. The woman was afraid as well, but fell at His feet and confessed anyway, and was comforted by Jesus
ii. Are you like the townsfolk, afraid of Jesus, so you do not approach? Or are you like the woman, afraid to approach, but you fall at the Master’s feet anyway, are heald, and shown mercy and compassion?
iii. It is your move!
c. We cannot touch Jesus Physically Today, but we can…
i. Put Jesus “on” in baptism.
1. “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ.” Galatians 3:27
2. Be “united with Him in His death and resurrection” via baptism, Romans 6:3-4
3. Have our sins washed away by His blood
a. Acts 22:16
b. Revelation 1:5
ii. If we cannot “touch” Jesus physically today, how do we seek Him, show Him our love?
1. SEEK JESUS THROUGH THE WORD
a. John 5:39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is these that bear witness about Me.”
b. Colossians 3:16 “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, with all wisdom teaching and admonishing one another with psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with gratefulness in your hearts to God.”
c. 1 Peter 2:2 “Like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow with respect to salvation.”
2. SHOW LOVE TO JESUS THROUGH OBEDIENCE TO THAT WORD
a. John 14:15 “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.”
b. John 14:21 “He who has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me; and he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I will love him and will reveal Myself to him.”
c. John 15:10 “If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love; just as I have kept My Father’s commandments and abide in His love.”
d. 1 John 2:5 “But whoever keeps His word, truly in him the love of God has been perfected. By this we know that we are in Him.”
e. 2 John 6 “And this is love, that we walk according to His commandments. This is the commandment, just as you heard from the beginning, that you should walk in it.”
If we have enough faith to seek Him, we will be IN HIS WORD. And through OBEDIENCE to that word, we show we love the Lord, and the love of God will be perfected in us.
Meaning, we will walk in His love and instruction, living a godly life, not of our own power, but the power of the Lord who dwells within us!
II. THE CHILD WAS DEAD, THE FAITH OF HER FATHER HEALED HER
a. On the Way to the House, Came Bad News
i. They were told Jairus’ daughter had died, and he should stop bothering Jesus.
ii. Jesus, however, reassured him and told Him to keep believing in the Savior, no matter what the world says.
iii. At the house, many wept and wailed. Jesus rebuked them, not because they shouldn’t be sad at a child’s passing, but because none of them had faith in Jesus and His saving grace.
1. They even laughed and mocked.
2. Just as the world does when you believe in the saving grace of Jesus and His Salvation
3. In the words of the Archangel Michael in Jude 9, “The Lord rebuke you!”
iv. Jesus sent all the scoffers out of the house.
1. He took the little girl’s hand and said, “Talitha, cumi” (Little girl, I say to you, arise)
2. The twelve-year-old immediately did.
3. Jesus then commanded them to feed her. Being dead and rising to life takes a lot out of you.
v. Though Jesus used the term “sleeping,” He was speaking metaphorically, because He was about to “wake her.”
1. Luke 8:53 makes it clear that the people knew she was dead, literally.
2. Luke 8:55 states, “her spirit returned.”
3. We read Jesus using the same metaphorical speech in John 11:11 when He tells the disciples, “Our friend Lazarus has fallen asleep.” Then in John 11:14 Jesus affirms, “Lazarus died.”
b. A Note About Twelve
i. You may have noticed that the woman had an issue of blood for twelve years, and the little girl was twelve years old. Why mention how long she was ill or how old the little girl was?
1. One must ascertain that it is because the Lord wants us to see the number 12.
ii. Twelve tribes of Israel
iii. Twelve Apostles
iv. The number frequently signifies completeness regarding God’s covenant people.
The fact that both miracles involve “twelve” could be a subtle indication that Jesus’ power to heal and restore applies to all of God’s people, both the ritually unclean (the woman) and the seemingly hopeless (the girl).
1. The woman’s twelve years of bleeding made her ceremonially unclean, cut off from worship and community (Leviticus 15:25–27). When Jesus heals her, He restores her physically, spiritually, and socially.
2. The girl, at twelve, was at the threshold of womanhood in Jewish culture — yet death struck. Jesus restores her to life, preserving her future.
v. Since the girl was twelve, her life began at the same time the woman’s suffering began. This parallel may suggest that these two were set aside and prepared to reveal the power and authority of Jesus over sickness and even death itself — and both are brought to wholeness in one encounter with Jesus, on the same day!
c. If We Have Faith to Allow Jesus to Touch us…
i. We should not fear Jesus, but seek Him in faith.
1. To be forgiven and become a new creation (2 Corinthians 5:17)
2. To enjoy the blessings of His presence in our lives (John 14:23)
3. So we can enjoy every spiritual blessing that is to be found in Christ (Ephesians 1:3)
ii. We need to make contact with Jesus through His word, worship, and
1. Receive a spiritual resurrection through baptism (Colossians 2:12-13)
2. And a bodily resurrection to eternal life (John 5:28-29; John 11:25)
Are you willing to set your fears aside and seek Jesus?
CONCLUSION
Think about the joy the woman had for touching Jesus and being healed after twelve years of suffering. The joy the parents felt when Jesus touched their daughter and brought her back to life.
We can experience great joy in Jesus today. We can “touch” Jesus by obeying the word. And if we have the faith and trust Jesus, He will touch us through the power of the Holy Spirit, and make us a new creation!
Notice that both the woman and Jairus took the initiative to “seek” Jesus and approach Him. We, too, must come to Jesus in faithful obedience if we are to experience His touch in our lives as well.
“Come to Me, all who [work to exhaustion], and I will give you rest. 29 Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30
“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. 8 For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. 9 Or what man is there among you who, when his son asks for a loaf, will give him a stone? 10 Or if he asks for a fish, he will not give him a snake, will he? 11 If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give what is good to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:7-11
“Draw near to God and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.” James 4:8
