INTRODUCTION

Today we will talk about the Sabbath. What it means in the Old Covenant, and what it now means in the New Covenant.

To this point, Yahweh has explained to Moses the 10 commands, civil/moral laws, ceremonial laws, how to build the ark of the covenant, the Tabernacle, and everything in it.

Last week Moses was told about the priesthood and garments.

We talked about how God calls you by name and gives you His Holy Spirit to equip you for service so that you can fulfill that calling.

This week we will look at the Sabbath.

Today we look at Keeping the Sabbath of God

SCRIPTURE READING

Exodus 31:12-18 (Legacy Standard Bible)

“Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying,

“But as for you, speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘You shall surely keep My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am Yahweh who makes you holy.

‘Therefore you shall keep the Sabbath, for it is holy to you. Everyone who profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people.

‘Six days work may be done, but on the seventh day there is a sabbath of complete rest, holy to Yahweh; whoever does any work on the sabbath day shall surely be put to death.

‘So the sons of Israel shall keep the sabbath, to celebrate the sabbath throughout their generations as an everlasting covenant.’

“It is a sign between Me and the sons of Israel forever; for in six days Yahweh made heaven and earth, but on the seventh day He rested and was refreshed.”

When He had finished speaking with him upon Mount Sinai, He gave Moses the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.”

TODAY'S MESSAGE

 I.       THE SABBATH, THEN AND NOW

a.      What was the Sabbath?

                                                 i.      Yahweh, speaking to Moses, says Moses’ job was to speak to the “sons of Israel,” saying, “You shall surely keep My sabbaths; for this is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I am Yahweh who makes you holy.”

1.      Speaking to the sons of Israel, not the church

2.      However, just as the 10 commands, civil laws, ceremonial laws, the Tabernacle, and everything in it had a purpose for the coming church, so did the Sabbath.

ii.      Yahweh said, “Keep MY sabbaths; for this is a sign between ME and you…”

1.      A sign of what?

2.      That you KNOW that He is Yahweh who makes you holy.

iii.      You do not make yourself holy, but Yahweh does.

1.      And the sign that you understand this?

2.      Keeping the Sabbath

b.     What does it foreshadow?

                                                 i.      Since the commands, the Tabernacle, and everything in it teaches of the coming Messiah, this is the SAME conversation Yahweh has been explaining everything to Moses. So it is safe to agree that this foreshadows the coming Messiah and Salvation through Him.

1.      The key to knowing the Sabbath is about Jesus because the previous chapters in the same conversation between Yahweh and Moses are all about Him.

2.      Keeping the Sabbath is a sign

3.      You KNOW it is Yahweh who makes you holy

c.      What does it mean to the church?

                                                 i.      Keeping Jesus holy is a sign you KNOW it is Yahweh who makes you holy

ii.      How did He make you holy?

1.      John 3:16-18 “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. “For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. “He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.”

iii.      Keeping Jesus (Sabbath) by not “profaning” Him

1.      The Hebrew word used here is translated as “profane,” which means to defile the Sabbath. It also can be defined as ungodliness, to “be” godless.

2.      In other words, profaning the Sabbath in the Old Covenant would equate to profaning Jesus in the New.

3.      Profaning Jesus means YOU are godless (you didn’t accept Jesus as Lord.), or you chose ungodliness as opposed to Jesus.

a.      Simply put, you do not “believe” (meaning put your trust in) Jesus. Therefore, as the reference in John 3 states, you are judged because you have not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

iv.      Remember, not keeping the Sabbath brings the judgment of death.

II.   CREATION, SEVEN LITERAL DAYS

a.      Creation referenced as taught in Genesis

                                                 i.      Genesis gives the seven days creation account

ii.      Seven days of creation is referenced throughout the scriptures

iii.      There is some debate on whether everything was created in seven literal days

b.     Did creation take place in seven literal days?

                                                 i.      I believe the Word of God is True and Trustworthy

1.      Even the parts I do not fully understand

2.      Psalm 119:160 “The sum of Your word is truth…”

3.      John 17:17 “Your word is truth…”

4.      2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be equipped, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

5.      Remember last week we talked about God calling you by name and equipping you to fulfill that calling.

ii.      Firstly, the Bible says it was seven literal days.

1.      I know the Bible also contains allegorical and symbolic speech

2.      However, the Bible also contains scientific facts not known at the time the scriptures were written

a.      Meaning what?

b.     The scriptures were written by the breathed Word of God’s Holy Spirit through the writers.

c.      This is why the original Hebrew, Aramaic, and Greek texts are infallible and free of contradiction.

3.      Remember 2 Timothy 3:16? All Scripture is God-breathed…

iii.      So the Bible SAYS seven days, but so does science. Look at Genesis 1

1.      In the beginning, God created the heavens and the Earth.

2.      The Earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep

3.      HOW MUCH TIME HAS JUST PASSED?

a.      Scientifically speaking, none. Because God has not created “the first day,” time has not yet begun.

4.      In verses 3-5, God creates light, separates it from darkness, and puts everything into motion, causing Day One…now there is time.

iv.      Ok, so who knows how long things were there, doing only God knows what until the first day.

                                               v.      But were each following days of creation literally a day?

                                            vi.      Y E S – scientifically speaking

1.      Day 2, the clouds and oceans formed

a.      Waters (and clouds) mean the ability for Oxygen (H2O)

b.     This is important as a first step

c.      Why?

2.      Because Day 3 is the plants and trees

a.      What do plants and trees need?

b.     Sunlight and water

c.      Through photosynthesis, they create OXYGEN

vii.      Think about it. If a day was a million years like some try to suggest so that the Bible fits their scientific belief, all the plants and trees created on day three would DIE waiting a million years for sunlight.

1.      Day 4 created the stars

2.      Day 5 God created the birds, fish, and insects (who now have oxygen because of the previous days)…By the way, insects are needed for pollinating some plants and trees or they would die off waiting a million years for the insects to appear.

3.      Day 6, man and animals were created (who now have the warmth of the sun, water to drink, vegetation for food as well as the creation of oxygen.)

4.      Day seven, the Sabbath, DAY OF REST. – Are we supposed to rest for millions of years?

viii.      Remember the Sabbath is the Day of Rest

c.      How can we be sure?

                                                 i.      Because the Bible says so, and science supports what it says!

III.            KEEP THE SABBATH, OR YOU WILL SURELY DIE

a.      What did the Tabernacle, everything in it, and the Sabbath foretell?

                                                 i.      It was for teaching the Hebrews about Salvation through the sacrifice of a Savior and how those who are in covenant with Him through that sacrifice would be made holy by Yahweh.

1.      Jesus is the “door” to the Tabernacle

2.      Jesus is the burnt sacrifice (fire/burning = judged)

3.      The basin for ceremonial washing, so the priest can enter the Holy Place is the Holy Spirit we receive when we accept the sacrifice

4.      Inside the Holy Place, Jesus is the showbread and wine offering sitting across and facing the menorah, which is the church

5.      The lamp oil is the Holy Spirit in the church, and the light and the Spirit of God in the church, which He alone controls

6.      The bowl of incense represents the prayers of the saints going before the Holy of Holies, separated by a great curtain

7.      Beyond the curtain is the Throne of God within the Holy of Holies

ii.      It is all about Salvation through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus

iii.      And so is the Sabbath

b.     How does the church keep the Sabbath holy?

                                                 i.      To say keeping the Sabbath is a day of the week does not work for a few reasons

1.      Firstly, it is explicitly given to the “sons of Israel.”

2.      Secondly, Mark 2:23-28 “And it happened that JESUS was passing through the grainfields on the Sabbath, and His disciples began to make their way along while picking the heads of grain. And the Pharisees were saying to Him, “Look, why are they doing what is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And He said to them, “Have you never read what David did when he was in need and he and his companions became hungry; how he entered the house of God around the time of Abiathar the high priest, and ate the consecrated bread, which is not lawful for anyone to eat except the priests, and he also gave it to those who were with him?” And Jesus was saying to them, “The Sabbath was made for man, and not man for the Sabbath. “Consequently the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath.”

a.      The Lord reveals the futility of religion and ceremony.

b.     They needed to understand it was created FOR MAN.

                                                                                                                         i.      For what?

                                                                                                                      ii.      To teach them something

                                                                                                                   iii.      What?

iv.      That the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath

ii.      Jesus IS the Sabbath to the Church

iii.      He is the one we “keep holy.”

iv.      Through Jesus and His sacrifice, we are made holy by Yahweh

c.      What happens if we “profane” it?

                                                 i.      The Hebrew word here means to defile the Sabbath. It also means ungodliness, to “be” godless.

ii.      In other words, we are ungodly without our Sabbath (Jesus) to make us holy.

iii.      The ONLY godliness in us is the Holy Spirit of God, which comes by the New Covenant in Christ’s atoning blood, keeping Him and His work holy and not profaning it.

iv.      If we profane, reject, or deny the work of Christ Jesus, we never receive the Holy Spirit.

                                               v.      Just as Yahweh warned the sons of Israel, keep the Sabbath holy or you will die.

When we reject Christ and His work at the cross, we fail to receive the Holy Spirit.

CONCLUSION

Without the Spirit of God at work within us, we are ungodly and unredeemed. Without the Spirit of God, which makes us holy, we will stand before God on Judgment Day, guilty. We will surely die.

Everyone dies a natural death.

This speaks of the “second death,” or “spiritual death,” which is the everlasting place for our souls.

Remember, not keeping the Sabbath brings the judgment of death. In the Old Covenant, physical death. In the New Covenant, everlasting spiritual death.

Remember, the Sabbath is the Day of Rest, a literal day in the Old Covenant. (24 hours) not millions of years which would be a nonsensical contradiction to the Word of God and in the New Covenant? Our rest is found in Jesus, who IS the Sabbath.

How do we Keep the Sabbath today?

Accept the Sacrifice of Christ Jesus as atonement for your Sin and Receive the Holy Spirit of God, which makes you holy.
