INTRODUCTION
Happy Thanksgiving week!
I hope you are thankful, not just this week or on Thursday, but every day you wake up to the Lord.
Paul tells us in scripture to “give thanks in all circumstances.”
The earmark of an evil, perverse, corrupt, and reprobate generation is the sin of thanklessness.
In other words, being ungrateful, unappreciative, and thankless.
Romans 1:21-22
“For although they knew God, they neither glorified him as God nor gave thanks to him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened. 22 Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools”
2 Timothy 3:1-5
“But mark this: There will be terrible times in the last days. 2 People will be lovers of themselves, lovers of money, boastful, proud, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, 3 without love, unforgiving, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not lovers of the good, 4 treacherous, rash, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God— 5 having a form of godliness but denying its power. Have nothing to do with such people.”
When people become unthankful, they will soon become unholy.
Thankfulness can be in word or deed. We remember deeds of thankfulness in scripture;
· The woman who remembered all the sins Jesus washed away washed His feet with her tears.
· The Samaritan leper was the only one of seven to return and give thanks to God for His healing.
Unthankful people will never serve the Lord with the same fervor, if at all, as those who remember the Lord saved them, made them new creations, and are thankful to Him.
Today we Examine God’s Word about the SIn of Ungratefulness
SCRIPTURE READING
1 Thessalonians 5:16-18
“Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”
We “rejoice always” by being content, praying continually, and giving thanks in all circumstances.
TODAY’S MESSAGE
I. THANKS, BE TO GOD FOR OUR BODY’S STRENGTH
a. To labor
i. Your job is a treasure from God
ii. God allows you to labor, earn and support your family and loved ones
iii. To have the financial capacity, you have to demonstrate that love
1. Through the support of your household
2. Support of your local church
3. Support those in need, especially widows and orphans
b. To love
i. Having the mental capacity to experience love for others
ii. And know their love for you because of the Lord
iii. To have the physical capacity, you have to demonstrate that love
1. I Corinthians 13 explains all the “doings” of love
2. Matthew 22:36-40 “Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”
c. To learn
i. The capacity to hear, see, speak, feel, and think.
ii. This is a blessing not all have!
iii. If you can learn and understand, you are blessed!
iv. Whatever capacity you have, be thankful to God for it
II. THANKS BE TO GOD FOR OUR SALVATION
a. Thanks to Calvary, I’m not the man I used to be
i. To be saved is a blessing, and you should be thankful!
ii. Thankful the old has passed away, and I am a NEW creation in Christ Jesus
iii. Thankful my sins were forgiven because I did not deserve to be forgiven
b. Thankful for God’s Mercy
i. We did not get what we deserved
ii. My sins kept me from God, and the holy life in Him
iii. God had mercy on me, forgiving my sins and keeping me from what I most certainly earned and deserved
c. Thankful for God’s Grace
i. We get what we do not deserve
ii. Through His grace, we receive the things we do not earn nor deserve, but by His grace alone, which gave time for His Holy Spirit to work in us, time for us to confess, time for us to repent, and receive that which we most certainly do not deserve.
d. Thankful for God’s Love
i. God giving us what ONLY Christ deserves
ii. Seeing only Christ on Judgment Day
iii. Loving us first, though we were yet sinners, and offering the only sacrifice that could change us and make us worthy, Jesus Christ.
III. THANKS, BE TO GOD FOR THE BROTHERHOOD WITH CHRIST JESUS
a. We are “in Christ,” and as such, we have a brotherhood
i. We are joint heirs with Him
ii. He has made a place for us
iii. And we are all brothers and sisters in Him
b. Christ has given us access to the Father
i. Hebrews 4:16 “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”
ii. BOLDLY – “Greek: meta parrhesia” meaning “surrounded by, in the middle of,” “all-outspokeness”
1. Literally translated, “we may come near, then, with freedom, to the throne of the grace, that we may receive kindness, and find grace.”
iii. We do not “approach the Throne of God.”
1. Instead, we are ALLOWED through Christ Jesus the freedom to COME NEAR to the Throne of Grace, that we may receive kindness and grace from God the Father.
c. Christ has created a new family in which we belong
i. One Body in which we are all members and should be thankful for
CONCLUSION
We should be thankful for our fellowship with God, our brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus, and the Holy Spirit.
Thankful for eternity and the fact that neither time nor death now has a sting.
So let us then be THANKFUL for;
Our Spouse
Proverbs 18:22 “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.”
Our Children and Grandchildren
Psalm 127:3-4 “Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward. Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one's youth. Blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them!”
Our Church
1 Corinthians 12:12 “For even as the body is one and yet has many members, and all the members of the body, though they are many, are one body, so also is Christ.”
Our Savior
Ephesians 1:3 “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in the heavenly realms with every spiritual blessing in Christ.”
The Mark of Thankfulness can be Word or Deed
Colossians 3:17
“whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”
Ephesians 5:20
“always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
