INTRODUCTION
So we have read the three groups of laws the Lord gave to Moses to prepare God’s people for the land he is giving them.
The 10 Commands (which show God is perfect and Holy and the only one able to create moral law and judge it)
The moral laws (how we are to live with our neighbors)
And the Ceremonial Laws (how we are to worship God)
Now that the standards have been set, God has established Himself as God, given the rules for living and worshiping. Now it is time to begin moving His people into the land He prepared for them.
We have seen the allegorical teachings and foretelling of the coming Christ, Salvation, and freeing from sin through the Exodus and Moses, as well as the three feasts given by the Lord to Moses, which also represented Salvation through Christ’s sacrifice (Passover and the blood of the lamb), the feast of the firstfruits showing our mission field of sewing the Word of God and reaping a harvest of believers, and the feast of the ingathering, or Judgment Day.
After these feasts are described, notice what comes next…Conquest of the Land
In this section of scripture, the Lord reveals to Moses an allegorical teaching of living for Christ Jesus, what the kingdom on Earth when serving Christ will be like, and what takes place when you reach the goal, the promised land.
Today we examine the Conquest of the Land
SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 23:20-33 – Conquest of the Land
20 “Behold, I am going to send an angel before you to guard you along the way and to bring you into the place which I have prepared.
21 Be attentive to him and obey his voice; do not be rebellious toward him, for he will not pardon your rebellion, since My name is in him. 22 But if you truly obey his voice and do all that I say, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. 23 For My angel will go before you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I will completely destroy them.
24 You shall not worship their gods, nor serve them, nor do according to their deeds; but you shall utterly overthrow them and break their memorial stones in pieces. 25 And you shall serve the Lord your God, and He will [that He may] bless your bread and your water; and I will remove sickness from your midst. 26 There will be no one miscarrying or unable to have children in your land; I will fulfill the number of your days.
27 I will send My terror ahead of you, and throw into confusion all the people among whom you come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you. 28 And I will send hornets ahead of you so that they will drive out the Hivites, the Canaanites, and the Hittites from you. 29 I will not drive them out from you in a single year, so that the land will not become desolate and the animals of the field become too numerous for you.
30 I will drive them out from you little by little, until you become fruitful and take possession of the land. 31 I will set your boundary from the Red Sea [Sea of Reeds] to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the Euphrates River; for I will hand over the inhabitants of the land to you, and you will drive them out from you.
32 You shall make no covenant with them or with their gods. 33 They shall not live in your land, otherwise they will make you sin against Me; for if you serve their gods, it is certain to be a snare to you.”
TODAY'S MESSAGE
I. BEHOLD, I AM GOING TO SEND AN ANGEL BEFORE YOU
a. To guard you along the way and bring you to the place I prepared
i. Angel – messenger of God
1. Can be a heavenly being
a. We see this in Michael, Gabriel, the Angel of the Lord, etc.
2. Can be a human
a. Genesis 32:3. And Jacob sent messengers (mal'ak) (angel) before him to Esau his brother in the land of Seir, the country of Edom
b. We also read that Moses, Joshua, and Gideon, to name a few did this as well.
ii. However, the description of this “messenger” is much more than either of these, but of a higher station. Listen to the narrative.
b. Be attentive to him and obey his voice, for he will not pardon rebellion
i. Since My name is in Him
ii. Jewish scholars teach this was Moses himself
1. However, this refers to the Son of God, before He was named Jesus
2. Because the expressions “pardon” and “My Name is in Him” are too high for Moses or any human.
c. But if you obey HIS VOICE and do ALL THAT I SAY
i. Then I will be an enemy to your enemies
1. If you obey HIS VOICE (the Son of God)
2. And do ALL I SAY (God the Father)
ii. John 8:58 “Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, before Abraham was, I am.”
iii. John 1:1 “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”
iv. John 12:49 “For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken.”
1. Obey His Voice (Son of God – Jesus)
2. And do all that I say (The God the Father)
23 For My angel will go before you and bring you into the land of the Amorites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Canaanites, the Hivites, and the Jebusites; and I will completely destroy them.
Allegorically speaking – I will send my Son to go before you (firstfruit) into the land of sin and false gods (the world), and I will completely destroy them (Judgment Day).
II. YOU SHALL NOT WORSHIP THEIR GODS
a. Nor serve, or do anything according to their deeds
i. But you will overthrow them
1. John 16:33 “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
2. Romans 12:21 “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”
3. 1 John 5:4-5 “For everyone born of God overcomes the world. This is the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God.”
ii. Break their memorial stones into pieces
1. Do not keep anything that remembers them or honors them
b. You shall serve the Lord your God
i. And He shall bless your bread and water
1. The Son will be among them
ii. And I will remove sickness from your midst
1. The Father in heaven from whom all blessings come
c. They would be fruitful and multiply
i. There will be no miscarrying in your land
ii. I will fulfill the number of your days
iii. Fulfilling the promise made to Abraham about both the promised land and being fruitful and multiplying.
iv. Moses is not reminding God of His covenant with Israel. Instead, God is reminding His people of their Covenant with Him.
III. I WILL SEND MY TERROR AHEAD OF YOU
a. And confuse all people you come to
i. And make your enemies turn their back to you (run away)
ii. I will send hornets to drive them out (perhaps literally, but could be spiritually speaking)
1. Mentioned in Deuteronomy 7:20; Exodus 23:28 & Joshua 24:12
2. The plural in Exodus is “hornets,” but singular in the other two verses.
3. Deuteronomy 7:20 “Moreover, the Lord your God will send the hornet against them, until those who are left and hide themselves from you perish.”
4. Joshua 24:12 “Then I sent the hornet before you and it drove out the two kings of the Amorites from before you, but not by your sword or your bow.”
iii. Little by little, so you have time to grow in number and take full possession of the land
1. Things could get out of control if given the land before they were ready to care for it.
2. So God “prepared” them so they could maintain the land
iv. Reminds me of our trek here on Earth.
1. God the Father sends Jesus (His messenger) – John 3:16
2. We obey what He commands – 1 John 5:1-5
3. He prepares us for the coming land that He is preparing for us – John 14:3
b. I will set your boundaries
i. From the Red sea to the Philistines
ii. From the wilderness to the Euphrates river
iii. I will hand over the inhabitants, and you will drive them out
c. You shall make NO covenant with them or their gods
i. They shall not live in your land
1. The land prepared for eternity will ONLY have children of God living there!
ii. Otherwise, they will make you sin against me
1. This is why there will be a NEW heaven, a NEW Jerusalem, and a NEW Earth, and we will get a NEW body!
2. Why NEW? These will have never seen sin!
3. We will no longer have to worry about being tempted
4. We will no longer have to worry about fighting between our spirit and flesh!
iii. For if you serve their gods, it is certain to be a snare to you
CONCLUSION
So we can see the parallel between the Lord leading the Hebrews into the promised land and how it connects with the New Covenant and the Lord leading us to the promised land.
This is History as well as an Allegory for the Coming Kingdom in Eternity
