INTRODUCTION

So we have read the three groups of laws the Lord gave to Moses to prepare God’s people for the land he is giving them.

The 10 Commands (which show God is perfect and Holy and the only one able to create moral law and judge it)

The moral laws (how we are to live with our neighbors)

And the Ceremonial Laws (how we are to worship God)

Now that the standards have been set, God has established Himself as God, given the rules for living and worshiping. Now it is time to begin moving His people into the land He prepared for them.

We have seen the allegorical teachings and foretelling of the coming Christ, Salvation, and freeing from sin through the Exodus and Moses, as well as the three feasts given by the Lord to Moses, which also represented Salvation through Christ’s sacrifice (Passover and the blood of the lamb), the feast of the firstfruits showing our mission field of sewing the Word of God and reaping a harvest of believers, and the feast of the ingathering, or Judgment Day.

After these feasts are described, notice what comes next…Conquest of the Land

In this section of scripture, the Lord reveals to Moses an allegorical teaching of living for Christ Jesus, what the kingdom on Earth when serving Christ will be like, and what takes place when you reach the goal, the promised land.

Today we examine the Conquest of the Land

 SCRIPTURE READING

Exodus 24The Covenant Confirmed

Then the Lord said to Moses, “Come up to the Lord, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and seventy of the elders of Israel. You are to worship at a distance, 2 but Moses alone is to approach the Lord; the others must not come near. And the people may not come up with him.”

3 When Moses went and told the people all the Lord’s words and laws, they responded with one voice, “Everything the Lord has said we will do.” 4 Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said.

He got up early the next morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and set up twelve stone pillars representing the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 Then he sent young Israelite men, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed young bulls as fellowship offerings to the Lord. 6 Moses took half of the blood and put it in bowls, and the other half he splashed against the altar. 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it to the people. They responded, “We will do everything the Lord has said; we will obey.”

8 Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

9 Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky. 11 But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.

12 The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.”

13 Then Moses set out with Joshua his aide, and Moses went up on the mountain of God. 14 He said to the elders, “Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you, and anyone involved in a dispute can go to them.”

15 When Moses went up on the mountain, the cloud covered it, 16 and the glory of the Lord settled on Mount Sinai. For six days the cloud covered the mountain, and on the seventh day the Lord called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 To the Israelites the glory of the Lord looked like a consuming fire on top of the mountain. 18 Then Moses entered the cloud as he went on up the mountain. And he stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights.”

TODAY'S MESSAGE

 I.       THE COVENANT

a.      Moses, Aaron, Nadab & Abihu (Aaron’s sons)

                                                 i.      And seventy elders of Israel

ii.      They were to worship at a distance

1.      Symbolic of only being able to get so close to God through the Law

iii.      Moses along is to approach the Lord; others must not come near, and the people may not come up with him.

1.      Symbolizes Moses as a type of Christ

2.      Moses, the mediator between the people and God

b.     The people respond to the Lord’s Words & Laws

                                                 i.      Notice the wording here, “words & Laws”

1.      Two terms of what was given to them by Moses from the Lord

2.      Words = the moral and ceremonial laws which they could obey

3.      Laws = 10 commands which reveals God as perfect and just which man cannot obey and is judged by

ii.      Vs 3,4 “they responded with one voice, “Everything the Lord has said we will do.” 4 Moses then wrote down everything the Lord had said.”

c.      An altar to the Lord is built

                                                 i.      Moses gets up the next morning and builds an altar at the foot of the mountain

1.      Symbolizes the path to the mountain where God is you must pass an altar of blood

2.      There is no way to the Father but by the Blood of Jesus

ii.      Twelve pillars to represent the twelve tribes of Israel, as well as 12 being the number of God Ordained Government

1.      This Godly Government and altar representing the sacrifice of Christ to obtain a path to God the Father was planned BEFORE the creation of the world!

2.      1 Peter 1:18-20 “For you know that it was not with perishable things such as silver or gold that you were redeemed from the empty way of life handed down to you from your ancestors, 19 but with the precious blood of Christ, a lamb without blemish or defect. 20 He was chosen before the creation of the world, but was revealed in these last times for your sake.”

iii.      You mean God knew there would be sin in the garden?

1.      Yes, God is Omniscient

a.      God has infinite awareness, understanding and insight

b.     He possesses universal and complete knowledge

iv.      And He planned the sacrifice of Christ before He created the world. (1 Peter 1:18-20)

                                               v.      The blood from the sacrifice was placed, half upon the altar, the other half upon the elders as a sign of covenant in blood.

vi.      This is a picture of the altar where Jesus split His blood is the ONLY way to the mountain where God is.

vii.      Vs 8 “Moses then took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the Lord has made with you in accordance with all these words.”

II.   THEY SAW THE GOD OF ISRAEL

a.      Leaders and Elders saw God

                                                 i.      Exodus 24:9-10 “Moses and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, and the seventy elders of Israel went up 10 and saw the God of Israel. Under his feet was something like a pavement made of lapis lazuli, as bright blue as the sky.”

1.      lapis lazuli is Saphire and represents the purity of God

ii.      Vs 9 they all saw the God of Israel

iii.      Isn’t this a contradiction of scripture?

1.      Exodus 33:20, 23; John 1:18; 1 John 4:12; John 5:37 and others

2.      But Exodus 24 is clear, they SAW GOD

b.     But I thought no one sees God?

                                                 i.      Exodus 33:20, 23 “But He said, “You cannot see My face, for no man can see Me and live!” & “Then I will take My hand away and you shall see My back, but My face shall not be seen.”

1.      God’s face can not be looked upon.

ii.      John 1:18 “No man has seen God at any time; the Only Begotten Son (Jesus), which is in the bosom of the Father, He has declared Him.

1.      Should have been translated, “no man has ever comprehended or experienced God at any time in all His fullness.”

2.      The Only Begotten Son is the ONLY ONE who could perfectly declare the Father.

a.      Only He can perfectly declare the Father because only He has fully comprehended Him.

iii.      1 John 4:12 – means no one has seen Deity in all its essence.

iv.      John 5:37 – Jesus is speaking directly to the Jews who believed in God, even though they personally never heard His voice nor seen Him.

                                               v.      So basically, verses saying you have never seen the Father are references to either a person or group who have never personally seen or heard, or it is a reference to comprehending or experiencing the FULLNESS of the Deity of God the Father, whom ONLY Jesus, the Only Begotten Son, has, and can declare from His perfect understanding.

c.      But God did not raise his hand against these leaders

                                                 i.      It is repeated in Vs 11, “But God did not raise his hand against these leaders of the Israelites; they saw God, and they ate and drank.”

III.            THE TABLETS OF STONE

a.      Tablets of stone with the Law & Commandments

                                                 i.      This is what I call a nugget of gold within the scriptures.

ii.      A seemingly innocent statement which possesses a truth that can easily be overlooked.

iii.      As in the earlier verse, “Words and Laws” stated the fact the Israelites were agreeing to the 10 commands, as well as the moral and ceremonial laws the Lord told Moses to give them.

iv.      Here, we see it stated again, “the Laws and Commandments”, referring to everything stated in Exodus 20 – 23

                                               v.      Vs 12 “The Lord said to Moses, “Come up to me on the mountain and stay here, and I will give you the tablets of stone with the law and commandments I have written for their instruction.”

vi.      There is NO WAY Moses, or any other man for that matter, in this time period could humanly fit everything the Lord sad to Moses in the last 4 chapters of Exodus onto a stone, small enough for a human to carry.

1.      The ONLY way four chapters of laws and commandments could be written on a stone small enough for a human to carry if it were written by God Himself!

b.     Moses & Joshua his aide went up on the mountain

                                                 i.      They waited for six days while the mountain was covered in a cloud

ii.      The seventh day the Lord called Moses from within the cloud

1.      Seven in the bible means Completion, Perfection, also denotes completion at the cross with Jesus speaking seven times from the cross.

a.      Luke 23:34

b.     Luke 23:43

c.      John 19:26-27

d.     Matthew 27:46

e.      John 19:28

f.       John 19:30

g.     Luke 23:46

iii.      Just as the cross was the Ordained Completion of the New Testament Covenant, this seventh day receiving of Moses on the mountain, called by the voice of God was the Ordained Completion of putting in place the Old Testament Covenant.

c.      Moses entered the cloud

                                                 i.      And he stayed on the mountain for forty days.

1.      40 in the bible generally symbolizes

a.      A period of testing

b.     Trial

c.      Probation

ii.      Jesus, before going to the cross, faced 40 days and nights in the desert before His blood sealed the New Covenant

iii.      Moses, a type of Christ, faced 40 days and nights in the cloud on the mountain before coming down with the tablets of stone filled with the words and commands written by the hand of God containing the Old Covenant

CONCLUSION

We see the similarities of God establishing the Old Covenant with Israel, and the New Covenant. In both, the ONLY way to the Father in heaven is through the altar and sacrifice. The blood in the Old Covenant a temporary covering and foreshadowed the coming perfect sacrifice, the blood of Christ in the New giving a complete removal of sin.

There is But One Way to God the Father and that is through Christ Jesus

NEXT WEEK

The Lord will instruct the people on building the first tabernacle
