INTRODUCTION

Last week we read the instructions for the first two feasts, or Holy Days, given by God to His people in the Book of Exodus. These two feasts tell us a lot.

Today we look at the restrictions the Lord places on Passover.

SCRIPTURE READING

Exodus 12:43-51

“The Lord said to Moses and Aaron, “These are the regulations for the Passover meal:

“No foreigner may eat it. 44 Any slave you have bought may eat it after you have circumcised him, 45 but a temporary resident or a hired worker may not eat it.

46 “It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house. Do not break any of the bones. 47 The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.

48 “A foreigner residing among you who wants to celebrate the Lord’s Passover must have all the males in his household circumcised; then he may take part like one born in the land. No uncircumcised male may eat it. 49 The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.”

50 All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions.”

TODAY’S MESSAGE

 I.       THE LORD HAD INSTRUCTED THE PASSOVER MEAL

a.      Passover is the First Holy Day because it is the beginning of redemption

                                                 i.      God instructed Moses in this Holy Day

ii.      It would be in the first month of the Hebrew Calendar

iii.      And this Holy Day would be the first of seven

iv.      God gives seven holy days in scripture which lay out His plan for the redemption of humankind from the fall in Genesis 3

                                               v.      From Salvation through the sacrifice to Eternity with the Lord

b.     The Passover / Feast of unleavened Bread & its meaning

                                                 i.      Unblemished Lamb = Sinless Jesus

ii.      Care for it 4 days = Bringing Jesus into your home (for family)

iii.      Sacrifice it at twilight = Matthew 27:45 “from the sixth hour, there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.”

iv.      Eat it roasted over fire = Judgment

                                               v.      Blood over doorway protects you from death = Jesus’ blood protects us

vi.      Whatever could not be eaten must be burned = Salvation is personal cannot share your salvation with others

c.      This FIRST Passover meal was for the Hebrews

                                                 i.      Exodus 12 instructions say it is for “the community of Israel”

                                              ii.      WHO is this?

iii.      The Community of Israel are those included in the Abrahamic covenant with God

II.   AFTER THE FIRST PASSOVER THE LORD ADDS RESTRICITONS

a.      No foreigner may eat it

                                                 i.      Exodus 12:43 the Lord gives restrictions to the Passover

ii.      Who is a foreigner? People “outside” the Abrahamic Covenant

iii.      If you have a servant that is circumcised (a sign that you are part of the Abrahamic covenant) they may eat it

1.      If they are not circumcised, you can circumcise them then they can eat

iv.      A temp-resident or hired worker (temp-help) may not eat it

                                               v.      Anyone IN the Abrahamic covenant CAN

For the FIRST Passover, this means salvation from death of firstborn at midnight in Egypt

For all Passover feasts afterwards, it means celebrating being saved by God because you are His people

b.     It must be eaten inside the house – no meat may be outside

                                                 i.      Verse 46 “It must be eaten inside the house; take none of the meat outside the house.”

1.      This is for you and your household…personal

ii.      Verse 46b “Do not break any bones”

1.      Prophetic foreshadow

iii.      Verse 47 “The whole community of Israel must celebrate it.”

1.      Who is the “community of Israel”?

2.      All those in the Abrahamic covenant with God

a.      Which includes more than just the 12 Tribes!

b.     All who have been circumcised to show they are part of the covenant are part of the community of Israel

c.      If a foreigner residing among you wants to partake

                                                 i.      If a “foreigner” (one outside the Abrahamic Covenant) wants to partake of the Lord’s Passover, he must have all the males in his household circumcised

1.      This was the outward sign of a spiritual truth; they were part of the Abrahamic covenant with God

ii.      THEN he may take part like one born in the land (adopted)

iii.      “No uncircumcised male may eat it. The same law applies both to the native-born and to the foreigner residing among you.”

50 All the Israelites did just what the Lord had commanded Moses and Aaron. 51 And on that very day the Lord brought the Israelites out of Egypt by their divisions.

III.            WHAT THIS HAS TO DO WITH OUR LORD AND COVENANT

a.      What the Passover represents

                                                 i.      The Passover is an allegorical teaching of sin and salvation through Christ Jesus

ii.      Pharaoh like Satan wanting to keep people in bondage

iii.      Egypt like sin holding people captive

iv.      Moses like Jesus sent to free the people

                                               v.      Passover represents Salvation through Christ Jesus and all the benefits, protection and blessings that come along with being in a covenant with God

b.     What the later restrictions represent

                                                 i.      Foreigners may not eat it

1.      Those outside the covenant cannot celebrate being set free from the bondage of sin

2.      If you are outside the covenant of Christ Jesus, you cannot take communion…you can physically, but it has no spiritual substance to it.

3.      The Lord instructed us to take communion in remembrance of Him and His sacrifice at the cross.

ii.      HOWEVER, it is available to ANYONE who wants to be part of the covenant

1.      In the same way foreigners could be part of the Abrahamic covenant, people today can be part of the Covenant with Christ Jesus

2.      Instead of the outward symbol of circumcision showing the spiritual truth of being part of the Abrahamic covenant, believers now circumcise their hearts showing the Fruits of the Spirit as their outward expression of the spiritual truth of being in covenant with Christ Jesus.

c.      Why this is a message of Salvation in Christ

                                                 i.      We, considering the New Testament and through the understanding given us by the Holy Spirit, can see the allegorical meaning of everything that took place in the Exodus

ii.      It is plain for us to understand the importance of what God did, and why

CONCLUSION

The message of redemption and salvation by and through the Lord has been taught in scripture since Genesis chapter 3.

As the Word of God reveals biblical history, looking back we can understand the importance of the events, Holy Days, Ordinances and why it was important to teach these to each generation.

We too should ensure we teach these things to our children and grandchildren so that they may learn that God is the same today as He was in the past and future.

What God desires is a relationship with us. Only He can make that way possible, which was accomplished through Jesus Christ, who is the only way to the Father.
