SERMON INTRODUCTION
We began a couple weeks ago looking at the
major peaks of events throughout scripture. Obviously, we are looking through
this in order, so naturally we are beginning with creation.
SCRIPTURE READING
Genesis 1:14-19
“And God said, “Let there be lights in
the vault of the sky to separate the day from the night, and let them serve as
signs to mark sacred times, and days and years, 15 and let them be lights in
the vault of the sky to give light on the earth.” And it was so. 16 God made
two great lights—the greater light to govern the day and the lesser light to
govern the night. He also made the stars. 17 God set them in the vault of the
sky to give light on the earth, 18 to govern the day and the night, and to
separate light from darkness. And God saw that it was good. 19 And there was
evening, and there was morning—the fourth day.”
I.
LET THERE
BE LIGHT – PART TWO
a. God already said “Let there be light”
i.
In Genesis 1:3 “God said let there be light, and there was light”
ii.
I believe this is
where God created the “rules” for light to exist within creation (the universe)
iii.
Although He had
already created the “heavens” in verse 1 (2nd heaven is space and 3rd
heaven is God’s abode) He doesn’t create the stars until verse 16
b. Here the Sun and Moon are given light so they
can be seen from earth
i.
I believe the
scripture here is telling us God “lit” the Sun
ii.
We know and understand
now that science says the sun is a gaseous star, when God created it He
gathered the gases together and ignited them, causing the sun to burn and its
light to be seen by day and night (reflection from the moon)
c. They are used to mark “sacred times”, days and
years
i.
God is always planning
ahead
ii.
We saw this when He
separated the waters in the sky to surround the earth from the waters below on
the planet itself, preparing for the coming flood
iii.
Here we see God
setting things in motion with the sun and moon, not just to mark day and night,
but to track days and years, as well as “sacred times”
iv.
What are the “sacred
times”?
1. Some say seasons, however in the beginning the true
north and magnetic north were the same (the earth had not been hit by a meteor
yet causing the flood) so it was not possible for seasons yet because the earth
did not have the proper angle.
2. What is sacred about a season?
3. I believe God is speaking of the “sacred times” of
the coming Holy Days He will set forth in Leviticus. 7 Holy Days that all point
to Christ. Now that is sacred!
a. Passover (Leviticus 23:4-8)
b. Unleavened Bread (Leviticus 23:6)
c. First Fruits (Leviticus 23:10)
d. Pentecost (Leviticus 23:16)
e. Feast of Trumpets (Leviticus 23:24)
f. Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16; 23:26-32)
g. Feast of the Tabernacles (Leviticus 23:34)
v.
God appointed these
sacred times before creating man, knowing we would need Christ Jesus
vi.
How did He know man
would sin before He created man?
1. Because He is God and knows all
2.
1 John
3:20 “For whenever our heart
condemns us, God is greater than our heart, and he knows everything.”
3.
Psalm
139:4 “Even before a word is on
my tongue, behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.”
4.
Isaiah
42:9 “Behold, the former things
have come to pass, and new things I now declare; before they spring forth I
tell you of them.” – THIS is why God’s prophets
are ALWAYS 100% accurate. If God tells you something will come to pass, it is
because He is outside of time and sees it, “literally”
5. You cannot be a perfect Judge unless you know
everything
vii.
From the very
beginning of creation God prepared a way for us to be one with the Lord and in
communion with God though we are not worthy, through Christ Jesus, we would be
righteous
II.
THE
LIGHTS IN THE VAULT OF SPACE
a. Verse 16 tells us He made two great lights, the
Sun and Moon
i.
After creating the Sun
and Moon, lit the Sun creating a great light, which reflects off the moon
creating the lesser light.
ii.
Verse 14 is where God
put them into motion at the appropriate speeds and angles to fulfill His Will,
which was to mark sacred times, count days and years.
b. The greater to govern the day, the lesser the
night
i.
The great to govern
the day
1. Govern means to rule
2. Rule means - a set of explicit or understood
regulations or principles governing conduct within a particular activity or
sphere.
3. What “rule” does the sun have over the earth in the
day?
a. Radiates light and heat
b. Creating solar energy to make it possible for life
to exist on earth
c. Plants need sunlight to grow and live
d. By the way, God created vegetation the previous day,
if He did not create the sun “literally” on the next day, all vegetation would
have died. Proving each day is a literal day, not millions of years.
e. The sunlight is part of the process plants use to
create oxygen
f. Without the sun the earth would freeze, there would
be no winds, ocean currents.
g. The sun is essential for agriculture, cultivating
land, producing crops, etc.
ii.
The lesser to govern
the night
1. How does the moon Rule - a
set of explicit or understood regulations or principles governing conduct
within a particular activity or sphere.
a.
The moon helps with
our earth’s “wobble”, which will be coming just after the flood!
b.
The moon actually
helps regulate the earths climate making a stable the seasons which will come
after the flood.
c.
The moon also creates
tides through gravitational pull creating a “pumping” motion of the oceans to
help with circulation of the seas
d.
Without the pull of
the moon our “wobble” would eventually become extreme
e.
This would throw our
planet into an extreme climate change, causing huge differences between day and
night temperatures, and eventually cause an ice age
iii.
So, it is very true
that the sun and moon “govern” or rule the day and night of earth, not just
offer light.
c. He also made the stars in the vault (2nd
heaven) give their light to earth
i.
I believe here we see
God put all of the universe (stars) in motion, giving their light to earth at
night along with the moon.
ii.
The stars mark passage
of time for us, and even the coming of the Lord with the north star!
iii.
This is in no way
giving permission for fortune-telling astrological readings and such, but
rather a more scientific view of space to reveal the passing of time, and
seasons, and the fact that God has created a universe so massive we cannot
fathom the edge, and yet scripture reveals it itself is too small for God’s
full presence!
III.
THE
LIGHTS IN THE VAULT OF OUR SKY
a. Govern the day and night
i.
So, the sun rules the
day and the moon the night, and life could NOT exist on earth without them!
ii.
Archaic man would not
know this, and may imagine a different order to creation, yet creation has
everything needed in the proper order!
iii.
In other cultures, and
belief systems stories are abundant of the moon coming along later, serving a
purpose of overlooking, watching or being a living person who has transformed.
iv.
However, the word of
God gives us truth, God placed the moon “in the beginning” where it is because
it is essential to life and the operation of the planet!
v.
And God placed the Sun
“after” the creation of vegetation so oxygen could be created for the upcoming
creating of humans!
vi.
Was there a pre-adamic
race?
1.
No…there is no room
for one because between the creation of vegetation and the sun is 24 hours, and
24 hours later God creates living creatures on earth (fish, birds) and 24 hours
later God creates man, and calls him Adam on day 6
2.
Vain imaginations of
man which exalt themselves against the truth of Christ and God’s Word are a
fast track to confusion and a turning from Truth
3. 2 Corinthians 10:5 “Casting down imaginations, and every high thing
that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into
captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ”
4. 2 Timothy 4:3-4 “For the time is coming when people will not endure
sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves
teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the
truth and wander off into myths.”
5. 1 Timothy 6:20 “O Timothy, guard the deposit entrusted to you.
Avoid the irreverent babble and contradictions of what is falsely called
“knowledge,”
vii.
Truth is God’s word
alone, not scholars, scientists, “educated” in the knowledge of the world, some
of them may have part of a truth, but God’s word IS truth.
1. John 17:17 “Sanctify them in the truth, your word is truth.”
2. 2 Timothy 3:16 “All Scripture is breathed
out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for
training in righteousness,”
3.
Psalm 119:105 “Your word is a lamp to my
feet and a light to my path.”
4.
Apart
from the truth of God’s Word, you have no light and you will stumble on your
path.
b. They separate light from darkness
i.
The fact that the sun
and moon govern the day and night is marvelous, but they are also a sign to the
separation of light and dark.
ii.
This is a symbolic
teacher to us, a sign of right and wrong, or being either in relation with God
or out.
1. 2 Corinthians 6:14 “Do not be yoked together with unbelievers. For
what do righteousness and wickedness have in common? Or what fellowship can light
have with darkness?”
2. Ephesians 5:8 “For at one time you were
darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light”
3.
John 3:19 “And this is the judgment: the light has come into
the world, and people loved the darkness rather than the light because their
works were evil.”
4.
1 John 1:5 “This is the message we have heard from him and
proclaim to you, that God is light, and in him is no darkness at all.”
c. This is the fourth day
CONCLUSION –
Did the fourth day
literally take place 24 hours after the third? Yes.
How do we know? Because
vegetation was created on the third, and it would have died if the fourth day
did not bring the needed sunlight to sustain the live of the vegetation, and cause
photosynthesis to take place creating the needed sugars and oxygen to sustain
the coming creatures of the fifth day!
Next week we will begin our series with the Fifth Day
