INTRODUCTION
A couple of weeks ago we read about Moses and Aaron going to Pharaoh and telling him what God said about letting the Israelites go.
Pharaoh instead burdened the Hebrews and made their work even harder by no longer supplying straw for their bricks forcing them to gather their own, while simultaneously demanding the same quota for bricks each day.
It was impossible to keep this quota, and Pharaoh knew this but demanded it to punish the Hebrews for listening to Moses about what God wanted from His people.
The Israelites were beaten for not keeping the quota, and some of the Israelite Overseers in charge of the Hebrews went to Pharaoh to ask why this was happening. Pharaoh responded with a denial of leniency and demanded they return to work and meet the quota.
Angry at this notion, when they left the palace, they saw Moses and Aaron and cursed them for their coming to Egypt and stirring up the Pharaoh’s anger and wrath. The Israelite Overseers then feared their lives would be next for listening to Moses.
Though the Israelite Overseers did not believe Moses about God’s promise, after Moses returns to God in prayer because of his own doubts, God straightens him out, promises deliverance, and sends Moses back to the Israelites with another message.
After the Israelite overseers cursed Moses and Aaron, Moses returned to God and asked why all of this was happening.
Exodus 5:22-23
“22 Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”
God responded in Exodus 6:1-12 explaining He had told Moses it would not be easy, and Pharaoh would not let the Israelites go. God said previously to Moses it would only be by the Hand of God Himself that Pharaoh would drive the Israelites out of Egypt.
We see God speaking to Moses and Aaron about the lineage up to this point. Then Exodus returns once more to the issue of Moses and his speech problem.
SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 6:13-27 the family lineage of the heads of the Tribes
Exodus 6:28-30
“Now when the Lord spoke to Moses in Egypt, 29 he said to him, “I am the Lord. Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I tell you.”
30 But Moses said to the Lord, “Since I speak with faltering lips, why would Pharaoh listen to me?”
Exodus 7:1-7
“Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. 2 You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt, 4 he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.”
6 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them. 7 Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.”
TODAY’S MESSAGE
I. THE FAMILY LINEAGE OF THE TRIBES OF ISRAEL
a. Exodus 6:13-27
i. Here we read of the heads of the family lines and which tribe they belonged to.
ii. Before the Messiah, lineage was very important.
iii. Through scripture we see many who “claim” lineage to Abraham to show they are part of God’s promise, and even today, those who do not accept Jesus as the Messiah are still awaiting the Messiah’s arrival, and many Hebrew and Muslim claim to be offspring of Abraham to be included in the promise of God.
b. Why lineage is important
i. It shows the promise God made with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob is continued and kept for the offspring, just as God promised Abraham.
ii. We are told in Galatians 3:7 that those who have faith are children of Abraham.
1. When we have faith (put our trust in God) we are considered part of the covenant promise God made with Abraham!
2. Luke 3:7-9 “John said to the crowds coming out to be baptized by him, “You brood of vipers! Who warned you to flee from the coming wrath? 8 Produce fruit in keeping with repentance. And do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father.’ For I tell you that out of these stones God can raise up children for Abraham. 9 The ax is already at the root of the trees, and every tree that does not produce good fruit will be cut down and thrown into the fire.”
c. This lineage also establishes the bloodline for the messiah so prophecies could be made and fulfilled by the Lord
i. There are MANY prophecies that deal strictly with the Messiah’s bloodline, which is fully established and traceable in scripture.
ii. Now that the Messiah has come, and even gentiles can be included in the promise, then there is no longer a need to track family lineage.
iii. We simply put our trust and faith in the Lord, and we are included in the Covenant Promise God made with Abraham because of the New Covenant the Lord makes with us!
II. WE ARE THEN REMINDED ABOUT WHY AARON WAS GOIN AND THAT GOD APPROVED
a. Exodus 6:28-30
i. Now when the Lord spoke to Moses in Egypt, 29 he said to him, “I am the Lord. Tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I tell you.”
30 But Moses said to the Lord, “Since I speak with faltering lips, why would Pharaoh listen to me?”
ii. We are reminded here of Moses and his resistance to the Lord because God wants us to understand that He is allowing Aaron to speak for Moses.
iii. No confusion will be made nor the implication that Moses decided for himself to use Aaron without God’s approval, otherwise, Moses would be in disobedience to God and could not be a messenger.
iv. We know God would not use Moses if he were in disobedience. Therefore Moses and his wife had to circumcise their son before Moses could continue his journey to Egypt.
b. We are shown God’s will is still going to be accomplished regardless
i. God worked with Moses and his frailty to accomplish His Will
ii. Isaiah 55:11 “so is my word that goes out from my mouth: It will not return to me void, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.”
iii. God’s Will is going to be done once He speaks it, with or without your obedience. One way or another, it will accomplish what God wills it to.
c. God approved of Aaron helping Moses to accomplish His Will
i. Exodus 7:1 “Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet.”
III. THE LORD COMMANDS MOSES AND AARON TO GO TO PHARAOH
a. Exodus 7:2-5
i. You are to say everything I command you, and your brother Aaron is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go out of his country. 3 But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and though I multiply my signs and wonders in Egypt, 4 he will not listen to you. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt and with mighty acts of judgment I will bring out my divisions, my people the Israelites. 5 And the Egyptians will know that I am the Lord when I stretch out my hand against Egypt and bring the Israelites out of it.”
b. God’s plan and Commands are laid out
i. You are to say everything I command you
ii. Your brother is to tell Pharaoh to let the Israelites go
iii. But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart
iv. Though I will show many signs and wonders in Egypt he will not listen
v. Then I will lay my hand on Egypt with mighty acts of judgment
vi. The Egyptians will know that I am the Lord
c. This is God’s Command (Exodus 7:2-5)
i. God has already judged the Pharaoh for not releasing His people
ii. God already determined Egypt and Pharaoh would receive a punishment
iii. However, God is a righteous and just God who is showing Egypt as well as Pharaoh WHY he is about to receive punishment.
iv. Since it has already been determined, God hardens Pharaoh’s heart, there is no going back.
CONCLUSION
There were many times Pharaoh could have let the Israelites go; he didn’t have to enslave them. Pharaoh didn’t have to treat them so poorly. He didn’t have to make their lives more miserable when Moses asked for their release.
These things brought the Hand of God against Pharaoh, and he was judged by God and would receive a just punishment.
God did not remove Pharaoh’s free will until after God judged him.
Once we are judged by God, there is no do-over, second chance, or returning.
When we stand before God on “judgment day”, what receive that day is it.
No pleading, no explaining, no rationalizing, it is finished.
This is why we, who belong to Christ Jesus, want to judge ourselves NOW so that we will not be judged later.
Examine yourself, measure your faith, and trust in God. Look at your submission and devotion to the Word. See if you are living a life-bearing fruit that is worthy of repentance.
6 Moses and Aaron did just as the Lord commanded them. 7 Moses was eighty years old and Aaron eighty-three when they spoke to Pharaoh.”
