INTRODUCTION

Jesus and His disciples are making their way to Jerusalem, and today we will look at the last healing miracle described in the Gospel of Mark, the healing of a blind man near the city of Jericho.

Bartimaeus had a persistence, faith, and gratitude that can serve as an example for us today.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

Mark 10:46-52

“(Then they *came to Jericho. And) …as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road.

47 And when he heard that it was Jesus the Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

48 And many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “Son of David, have mercy on me!”

49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they *called the blind man, saying to him, “Take courage, get up! He is calling for you.”

50 And throwing off his outer garment, he jumped up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered him and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?”

And the blind man said to Him, “Rabboni [Master], I want to regain my sight!”

52 And Jesus said to him, “Go; your faith has saved you.” Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.”

I.                  WHAT WE SEE TAKING PLACE

a.    The multitudes about Him

                                                   i.      Some of the multitudes were followers of Jesus

ii.      Many were on their way to Jerusalem to observe the Passover

b.   There were others healed, and even two blind men

                                                   i.      According to Matthew 20:29-32

ii.      Luke’s account focused on “a certain blind man” Luke 18:35-43

iii.      Mark identifies him as Bartimaeus

iv.      Mark 10:46 tells us Bartimaeus sat by the road, begging

c.     The Miracle

                                                   i.      The desperate plea

1.    “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me!”

2.    This came through Bartimaeus’ FAITH

3.    Faith is the human response toward the Lord

4.    Faith is the posture that brings the person into direct appeal to Christ.

5.    Those around him tried to silence him and his pleas.

Sounds like Job’s “friends”.

ii.      However, the Disciples gave encouragement

1.    “Take courage, get up! He is calling for you.”

iii.      Response to the calling of Christ Jesus

1.    What did Bartimaeus do in response to Jesus calling him?

2.    “He threw off his outer garment”

a.     Essentially he took off the old man…

b.    He left the past behind.

c.     He was about to put on a new garment.

d.    The old had passed away

3.    “He jumped up and came to Jesus.”

a.     Not casually made his way

b.    Not, gradually took time to get to know about Jesus better

c.     Not tested to see if Jesus was really what he wanted, or needed

d.    He jumped up

e.     And came to Jesus when he found Jesus was calling him

                                              iv.      Submission to the Lord

1.    We know Bartimaeus submitted to the Lord because he calls Him Master.

2.    If the Lord is your Master, then you are His servant!

                                                 v.      Jesus responds to Bartimaeus and you!

1.    Because when you “submit” to Christ, you make Him your Master, forsaking all other masters, including yourself.

2.    The Lord then responds to your submission with…

3.   Compassion

a.     The inner disposition of Christ that moves Him to act.

b.    “Seeing the crowds, He felt compassion for them” Matthew 9:36

c.     “moved with compassion, Jesus stretched out His hand…” Mark 1:41

4.   Mercy

a.     God relieving suffering or withholding what is deserved. Healing often fits here.

b.    Mercy is Compassion Enacted

c.     Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful” Luke 6:36

5.   Grace

a.     God giving what is not earned, but acquired through your faith.

b.    Grace is the unmerited NATURE of the act

c.     “For by grace you have been saved through faith… not of works” Ephesians 2:8–9

6.   Divine response to faith

a.     At times Scripture explicitly links the act of Divine Response to faith, though never as a wage.

b.    This observable act of healing, restoration, deliverance, is where God’s mercy and grace become visible.

c.     “And Jesus said to him, ‘Go; your faith has saved you.’ Immediately he regained his sight” Mark 10:52

7.   Blessing

a.     This is mostly the aftermath or sustained condition following Divine Intervention resulting in a state of restored favor and wholeness.

b.    I am blessed.

c.     A broader covenantal category for God’s favorable action toward those who walk in His ways.

d.    “All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey Yahweh your God” Deuteronomy 28:2

vi.      Faith receives Christ, His compassion moves Him, His mercy acts, Grace defines His actions, Divine power accomplishes it, blessings remain.

vii.      And what happened with Bartimaeus after this encounter with Jesus?

1.    He immediately follow’s Jesus

II.              OBSERVATIONS

a.    Persistence

                                                   i.      Despite others trying to silence his pleas, Bartimaeus displayed persistence

Jesus says in Matthew 7:7-8Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened.”

Luke 18:1-8 “Now He was telling them a parable to show that at all times they ought to pray and not to lose heart, saying, “In a certain city there was a certain judge who did not fear God and did not respect man. Now there was a widow in that city, and she kept coming to him, saying, ‘Give me justice from my opponent.’ And for a while he was unwilling; but afterward he said to himself, ‘Even though I do not fear God nor respect man, yet because this widow is bothering me, I will give her justice, lest by continually coming she wears me out.’” And the Lord said, “Hear what the unjust judge *said. Now, will God not bring about justice for His elect who cry to Him day and night, and will He delay long over them? I tell you that He will bring about justice for them quickly. However, when the Son of Man comes, will He find that faith on the earth?”

b.   Faith

                                                   i.      Bartimaeus was healed because of his faith

ii.      Similar to the woman with the issue of blood in Mark 5:34

iii.      Do we have the faith to receive what is God’s will for us?

1 John 5:14 “And this is the confidence which we have toward Him, that, if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”

c.     Gratitude

                                                   i.      Bartimaeus followed Jesus and glorified God

ii.      Like the Samaritan leper who expressed his gratitude for his healing in Luke 17:12-19

iii.      Do we express gratitude for the many blessings God gives us?

CONCLUSION

Bartimaeus, who many sought to silence, remained persistent, held on to his faith in Jesus, and was grateful to His Master, so he served and followed Him.

This should remind us to persist in our requests to Jesus, ignoring those around us who do not believe who discourage and try to silence us.

Continue to develop and maintain our faith which is necessary to receive from the Lord.

And above all, never fail to express our gratitude to Jesus, our Master, and follow Him, even unto death, which is where Jesus was headed to in Jerusalem when this took place.

FINAL THOUGHT

Are you willing to ignore those who wish to silence you, and continue to call out to Jesus in faith?

Answer His call and let the old pass away, and come to Jesus.

Show your gratitude to Jesus by following Him as His disciple, in response to the Gospel of Christ?

Matthew 28:18-20; Mark 16:15-16
