The Preaching Ministry of Jesus I
Today is Sunday. February 2nd,
2025
INTRODUCTION
Over the last couple of weeks, we have looked at
Jesus being baptized and then led into the wilderness by the Holy Spirit for 40
days of testing and temptation.
We saw Satan wait until Jesus had fasted for 40 days
and nights, and when His human flesh was weakest, that is when Satan tempted
Jesus.
Remember, temptation is NOT a sin. Giving in to the
temptation is where we fall. Satan tempted Jesus by turning a stone into bread
because he knew how weak the human flesh was. However, Satan did not understand
how the indwelling of the Holy Spirit strengthens the flesh beyond temptation.
Though Satan tried to misuse scripture to tempt
Jesus, Jesus answered each of the three attempts of Satan to tempt Him with
scripture, correcting Satan’s misuse of God’s word.
This is one of the greatest tragedies of the
Christian walk. When people like Satan try to use the word of God for their own
gain and purpose. We can see the misuse of scripture on TV, in books, and on
the internet. Prosperity preachers, various so-called ministries, and even
cults use the word of God, collapsing the context, cherry-picking verses, and
misapplying what is written to prove their man-made doctrine, belief, or obtain
their desire.
Though Satan tried to appeal to the weakened flesh
of Jesus with temptation, Jesus shows us that we have power through the Spirit
of God to resist and the written word to rebuke and correct false teachings and
applications.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof,
for correction, for training in righteousness, 17 so that the man of God may be
equipped, having been thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
We now see the beginning of Jesus’ ministry of
preaching.
This public ministry began in Galilee just after the
imprisonment of John the Baptist (Mark
6:17-18)
We see in Matthew 4:13 that He
began at Capernaum on the edge of the Sea of Galilee.
Mark 1:14 tells
us that Jesus preached “the gospel of God”, telling people to REPENT and PUT
YOUR TRUST IN THE GOSPEL.
So, Jesus says that the gospel of God is to repent
and put your trust in the gospel.
So, let’s read our reference and talk about what
Jesus proclaimed and whether it is the same message we should preach today.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Mark 1:14-15
“Now after John had been delivered up into
custody, Jesus came into Galilee, preaching the gospel of God, 15 and saying,
“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe [LIT: put your trust] in the gospel.”
I.
JESUS PREACHED THE KINGDOM OF
GOD. WHAT IS THE KINGDOM OF GOD?
a.
The Kingdom of God is
foretold of in the Book of Daniel
i. A
Kingdom which shall never be destroyed (Daniel 2:44)
ii. A
Kingdom, along with glory and dominion, given to the Son of Man (Daniel 7:13-14)
b.
The Kingdom of God involves four
concepts
i. God’s
kingship, rule, or recognized sovereignty
1. The
term “kingdom,” as used by the Jews, often stressed the abstract idea of rule
or dominion, not a geographical area surrounded by physical boundaries.
2. Kingship
means royal power, dominion, and rule; it is the right or authority to rule
over a kingdom.
ii. This
rule of God is spiritual in nature
1. It
is not a physical kingdom
a.
John 18:36 “Jesus
answered, “My Kingdom is not of this world. If My Kingdom were of this world,
then My servants would be fighting so that I would not be delivered over to the
Jews; but as it is, My Kingdom is not from here
[LIT: This Realm].”
2. His
Kingdom is spiritual.
a.
Romans 14:17 “for
the kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness and peace and
joy in the Holy Spirit.”
3. Today,
this Kingdom’s visible manifestation is the Body of Christ in the form of the Lord’s
church.
a.
For the church is that community of
souls in whose hearts God is Sovereign
b.
This means the church constitutes the
Kingdom of God on earth.
i. Matthew 16:16-19
ii. Colossians 1:12-14 “giving
thanks to the Father, who has qualified us to share in the inheritance of the
saints in light. 13 Who rescued us from the authority of darkness, and
transferred us to the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have
redemption, the forgiveness of sins.”.
iii. I Thessalonians 2:12
iv. Revelation 1:4, 6, 9
4. And
this Kingdom has a future element as well as a present one
a.
Jesus spoke of the future aspect in Matthew 25:34 “Then
the King will say to those on His right, ‘Come, you who are blessed of My
Father, inherit the kingdom, which has been prepared for you from the
foundation of the world.”
b.
Paul spoke of the future aspect in 1 Corinthians 15:50
and 2 Timothy 4:18
c.
And Peter spoke of the future Kingdom
in 2 Peter 1:10-11
c.
The Kingdom of God is both
present and future
i.
The Kingdom of God in the
present sense
1. It
is found wherever the sovereignty of God is accepted in the hearts of men.
2. It
is a spiritual kingdom. God rules the hearts of men
3. Its
outward manifestation today is the Lord’s church
4. This
rule, or the Kingdom of God, was birthed on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2)
ii. The Kingdom of God in the future sense
1. The
rule or Kingdom of God will be complete with the coming of the Lord
2. It
will end with a New Heaven and a New Earth in which righteousness dwells
a.
As described by Peter in 2 Peter 3:10-13
b.
Described by John in Revelation 21 and Revelation 22
3. And
the only ones who will experience this will be those within the church who
submit to God’s will today!
a.
Matthew 7:21-23
b.
2 Peter 3:13-14
The Kingdom of God includes the Good News gospel of Jesus Christ!
II. DOES THE KINGDOM OF GOD NEED TO BE PROCLAIMED TODAY?
a.
Of course!!
i. Philip
“preached the things concerning the kingdom of God” Acts 8:12
ii. The
Apostle Paul taught and preached;
1. About
the challenges in entering the future Kingdom in Acts 14:22
2. He
reasoned and persuaded people concerning the Kingdom Acts 19:8
3. Preached
the Kingdom among the Ephesians in Acts 20:25
4. Testified
of the Kingdom of God to the Jews in Rome in Acts 28:23, 30-31
iii. In
Paul’s letters (epistles) he wrote;
1. In Romans 14:17 the nature of the
Kingdom
2. In 1 Corinthians 6:9-10; Galatians 5:21; Ephesians 5:5
those who will not inherit the kingdom of God
3. In 1 Corinthians 15:24-26
Jesus gives the Kingdom to God when He returns
4. Colossians 1:13 about how we are in
the Kingdom NOW!
5. 2 Timothy 4:1, 18 Jesus
judging us at His appearing for His new Kingdom, and about the Lord preserving
him for His heavenly Kingdom
b.
However, there is an
important difference in our message today
i. John
the Baptist, Jesus, and His disciples had a “Limited Commission” proclaiming
the kingdom “at hand”, meaning drawing near.
1. For
the rule of God as foretold by the prophets was about to be
manifested
a.
Mark 1:14-15; Daniel 2:44;
7:13-14
2. During
Jesus’ earthly ministry, that Kingdom (reign) was yet future
3. That
was the “good news” (gospel) of the Kingdom then: it was near! (at hand)
ii. After
the ascension of Christ, the preaching of the Kingdom proclaimed it both present and future
1. The
rule of God is now being fully manifested through Jesus Christ - Matthew 28:18; Ephesians 1:20-22; 1 Peter 3:22
2. Those
who “gladly receive” the message are added by the Lord Himself to His
church or Kingdom (i.e., the community of believers who submit to His
authority) - Acts 2:36-41,47; Colossians
1:13; Revelation 1:9
3. Those
who persevere to
the end inherit the heavenly and everlasting Kingdom of our Lord - Acts 14:22; 2 Peter 1:10-11
This is the Good News (gospel) of the Kingdom today: it is both
NOW and COMING!
CONCLUSION
The
preaching ministry of Jesus involved proclaiming the Kingdom of God, the coming
rule or reign of God, as proclaimed by the prophets like Daniel.
However,
Jesus did more than proclaim the coming Kingdom of God, He called on people to
REPENT, and He called on people to put their TRUST in the gospel message.
We
will look at what it is to repent and put your trust in the gospel next week.
In
the meantime, we do well to ask ourselves, “Are we in the Kingdom of God
today?”
The
answer lies in whether we submit to the rule of God now manifested in the
person of Jesus Christ.
