INTRODUCTION
Today is Mother’s Day.
I have been preaching for nearly 25 years now, and by this November, I will have preached 1,000 Sunday Services. Over those years, I have given many Mother’s Day messages and tried to give them in various degrees of understanding and encouragement, both to mothers and their children.
One of the things I have seen in my nearly 30 years involved in the church is how a mother’s influence reaches far beyond a child’s habits or household routines.
Scripture presents a godly mother as one entrusted with shaping the spiritual direction of her children, much in the same way the man is entrusted and accountable for the spiritual leadership of the household.
Some believe the church should have the responsibility; this is neither the case nor is it scriptural. While the church can support, help equip, and encourage families, the primary responsibility for biblical instruction belongs within the home.
God designed mothers to be the daily instructors whose words, conduct, and devotion leave enduring impressions upon the hearts of their children.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Mark 11:1-11
“And as they *approached Jerusalem, at Bethphage and Bethany, near the Mount of Olives, He *sent two of His disciples, 2 and *said to them,
I. GOD ORDAINED MOTHERS TO INSTRUCT THEIR CHILDREN
a. Biblical instruction begins in the home
Deuteronomy 6:6-9 “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up. 8 You shall bind them as a sign on your hand, and they shall be as bands between your eyes. 9 You shall write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.”
1. The command is not given to priests alone, or only to synagogue teachers, but to parents living ordinary life before their children.
2. Diligently teach the Lord to your children
3. In your home, when outside your home
4. When you end your evening and begin your day
5. Bind them as a sign on your hand…meaning the things you do in life reflect the Lord’s teachings for the children to witness
6. Bands between your eyes, on your head, meaning the things you see are in the light of the Lord’s teaching, and the thoughts in your mind reflect them as well.
7. Writing them on the doorposts and gates of your home is not a literal action, but anyone who sees your house, or comes to your house, will know without a word being said, you belong to the Lord.
b. We see Mother’s teaching the faith in scripture.
i. Paul reminded Timothy that his spiritual foundation came through the faithful instruction of his mother and grandmother. NOT his father, not the teachers of the Law, not the religious leaders. His mother and grandmother.
2 Timothy 1:5 “being reminded of the unhypocritical faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that it is in you as well.”
2 Timothy 3:14-15 “But you, continue in the things you learned and became convinced of, knowing from whom you learned them, 15 and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
ii. Timothy’s theological foundation was laid at home by his mother and grandmother, who walked the walk and talked the talk, living by the word of the Lord.
iii. All this, long before Timothy ever became a minister.
c. The church assists, but cannot replace parental discipleship
i. Remember, children’s church, Sunday school, vacation bible school, teen group, etc., though they may be good programs, they are not scriptural.
1. Mothers are instructed to shape children’s hearts daily.
2. Consistent maternal discipleship to the children in the form of conscience, habits, worldview, the way the mother lives and speaks teaches her children about the Lord, and how important He is in public and private life.
3. A child who hears scripture but never sees it treasured at home, receives a broken message about the Lord.
4. God intended the home to be the first classroom of theology, not instruction on how to live a double life.
II. A MOTHER’S DAILY LIFE TEACHES MORE LOUDLY THAN HER WORDS
a. Children learn by observation
i. Children imitate before they fully understand. They absorb your priorities, attitudes, speech, fears, and loves simply by watching how you live and talk.
Proverbs 31:26-28 “She opens her mouth in wisdom,
And the instruction of lovingkindness is on her tongue.
She watches over the ways of her household,
And does not eat the bread of idleness.
Her children rise up and bless her;
As for her husband, he also praises her, saying: “Many daughters have done excellently, But you have gone above them all.”
ii. Her speech, conduct, and daily stewardship become a living curriculum.
b. Mothers preach continual sermons through ordinary life
i. Children see
1. How their mother responds to suffering
2. Whether prayer is genuine or performative
3. Whether worship is joyful or merely ritual
4. Whether forgiveness is practiced at home
5. And most importantly, how important God is. Is Christ truly loved above worldly pursuits?
ii. Long before children evaluate the doctrinal precision of the church, they evaluate the authenticity of their mother.
c. Hypocrisy damages spiritual credibility.
i. Paul emphasized that Timothy’s faith was unhypocritical. Genuine Christianity within a mother becomes deeply persuasive to children.
ii. A mother may teach Bible verses faithfully, but if she is filled with bitterness, gossip, anger, or worldliness dominates her life, children will often follow what she practices rather than what she professes.
iii. Titus 2:3-5 shows that older women are to model godliness so that the Word of God is honored through everyday conduct.
III. A godly mother leaves a Spiritual legacy that can reach generations
a. Faithful motherhood has eternal consequences
i. Many of the strongest servants of God were shaped by faithful mothers.
ii. Timothy is but one example. History repeatedly demonstrates the spiritual power of a mother's influence.
iii. A mother may never stand behind a pulpit, write theology books, or even lead large ministries, yet her influence upon a child may impact generations she never sees.
b. Mothers plant seeds that they may not immediately see grow
i. Spiritual instruction often requires years of patient labor.
ii. Mothers, like most who minister, may grow discouraged because results are not immediate.
iii. However, scripture emphasizes sowing faithfully and trusting God for increase.
Galatians 6:7-9 “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked, for whatever a man sows, this he will also reap. 8 For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life. 9 And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we will reap if we do not grow weary.”
iv. Every scripture read, every prayer spoken, every act of repentance witnessed, every example of forgiveness, every display of faithful service leaves impressions upon a child’s soul.
c. The highest calling of motherhood is to point children to Christ
i. A mother cannot save her children, but she can consistently direct them toward the Savior through truth and example.
ii. Her greatest success is not merely raising educated, talented, or socially successful children, but children who know, fear, and love Christ.
Proverbs 22:6 “Train up a child in the way he should go, Even when he is old he will not turn away from it.”
CONCLUSION
God never intended the spiritual formation of children to be outsourced to the church, Sunday school, or vacation bible school.
Vacation Bible School was created in 1894 as a way to teach the children in the church more scripture. Later, it turned into a way of getting neighborhood children involved in a church with fun activities in hopes of getting their parents to attend, none of which is scriptural.
The child’s home is, and will always remain, the center of a child’s discipleship. Even if a child attends Sunday school, children’s church, and vacation bible school, they still spend far more time at home with their parents.
Mothers carry a great responsibility and immense stewardship before God because of their words, attitudes, works, and deeds. Their conduct and priorities shape the spiritual atmosphere in which their children learn and grow.
The faithful Christian mother teaches scripture with her lips, confirms it with her life, and magnifies Christ through daily obedience to Him.
Often, without realizing it, she becomes the most influential theologian her children will ever know.
FINAL THOUGHT
Charles Spurgeon often spoke about the influence of mothers.
“I cannot tell how much I owe to the solemn word of my good mother.”
Eliza Spurgeon did not merely teach doctrine abstractly. She lived long enough to see the fruit of faithful motherhood become one of the greatest preaching ministries in church history.
Charles Spurgeon has become known as the “Prince of Preachers” and was first discipled in the home by a mother who believed Scripture and taught it diligently to her children.
