SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 26:15-37 (Legacy Standard Bible)
“Then you shall make the boards for the Tabernacle of acacia wood, standing upright. “Ten cubits shall be the length of each board, and one and a half cubits the width of each board. “There shall be two tenons for each board, fitted to one another; thus you shall do for all the boards of the Tabernacle. “You shall make the boards for the Tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side. “You shall make forty bases of silver under the twenty boards, two bases under one board for its two tenons, and two bases under another board for its two tenons; and for the second side of the Tabernacle, on the north side, twenty boards, and their forty bases of silver; two bases under one board and two bases under another board. “For the rear of the Tabernacle, to the west, you shall make six boards. “You shall make two boards for the corners of the Tabernacle at the rear. “They shall be separated beneath, but together at their completion at its top, at the first ring; thus it shall be with both of them: they shall form the two corners. “There shall be eight boards with their bases of silver, sixteen bases; two bases under one board and two bases under another board.
“Then you shall make bars of acacia wood, five for the boards of one side of the Tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the other side of the Tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the Tabernacle for the rear side to the west. “The middle bar in the center of the boards shall pass through from end to end. “You shall overlay the boards with gold and make their rings of gold as holders for the bars; and you shall overlay the bars with gold. “Then you shall erect the Tabernacle according to its plan which you have been shown in the mountain.
“You shall make a veil of blue and purple and scarlet material and fine twisted linen; it shall be made with cherubim, the work of a skillful designer. “You shall hang it on four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold, their hooks also being of gold, on four bases of silver. “You shall hang up the veil under the clasps, and you shall bring in the ark of the testimony there within the veil; and the veil shall separate for you the holy place and the Holy of Holies. “You shall put the mercy seat on the ark of the testimony in the Holy of Holies. “You shall set the table outside the veil and the lampstand opposite the table on the side of the Tabernacle toward the south; and you shall put the table on the north side.
“You shall make a screen for the doorway of the tent of blue and purple
and scarlet material and fine twisted linen, the work of a weaver. “You shall
make five pillars of acacia for the screen and overlay them with gold, their
hooks also being of gold; and you shall cast five bases of bronze for them.”
TODAY'S MESSAGE
I. WHY BUILD A TABERNACLE?
a. Because God said to
i. God did not dwell in the hearts of humans until after Christ’s death and resurrection.
ii. The Tabernacle (then Temple) is where God would dwell among His people, and allow them a place to worship Him until the cross
b. It served two purposes
i. First, it was a place for God’s people to worship Him
ii. Secondly, it was the teaching of Christ, Salvation and the fact that one day, we the believers and followers of Christ Jesus, would be the Temple of God and He would dwell within us.
iii. There would be a day when we would be reconciled with God
c. The order of dwelling
i. The Lord dwelled among us in the Garden (Genesis 1;2) before the fall
1. Sin breaking that communion
ii. The Tabernacle (Exodus 26)would allow God’s presence among His people
1. It was portable, designed by God for moving
iii. Later, the Temple (1 Kings 6) would be built
1. An immovable place of worship
iv. After the cross, our bodies (1 Corinthians 6:19-20)become the Temple of God’s Holy Spirit
II. THE TABERNACLE
a. Why the Tabernacle before the Temple?
i. A few reasons for this
1. They were afraid to take the land God promised them (Numbers 13)
a. Nephilim, the sons of Anak
i. Anak was son of Arba
ii. His descendants were known as Anakim
iii. They were giants (Deuteronomy 9:2)
iv. Caleb drove them out of Hebron (Joshua 15:13)
b. The Nephilim were men of great size (and men of renown, mighty men)
i. Genesis 6:4 “The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also afterward, when the sons of God came in to the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. Those were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown.”
ii. Deuteronomy 1:28 “The people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large and fortified up to heaven! We actually saw there the offspring of the Anakim!”
iii. Deuteronomy 9:2 “a strong and tall people, the offspring of the Anakim”
iv. Joshua 9:21 “At that time Joshua came and wiped out the Anakim from the hill country, from Hebron, from Debir, from Anab, and from all the hill country of Judah, and from all the hill country of Israel; Joshua utterly destroyed them with their towns. 22 None of the Anakim was left in the land of the Israelites; some remained only in Gaza, in Gath, and in Ashdod.”
c. 1 Samuel 17:4 “A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span.”
i. First of all, they guessed…Goliath wasn’t letting people come up with their arms (cubits) to measure him. So 9 foot was a guesstimate since they did not have tape measures then.
ii. Secondly, this guess is probably very accurate
iii. A little over 9 foot tall
1. Robert Wadlow was 9 foot tall (dod 1940)
2. John Rogan was 9 foot tall (dod 1905)
3. John Carroll was 8’ 8” tall (dod 1969)
4. Leonid Stadnyk was 8’ 5” tall (dod 2014)
iv. If a pure-blood Nephilim had a baby with another pure blood, maybe we would have more 9 foot tall people today.
v. But even after years of mixing DNA, it is not that rare to get people over 7, 7 ½, 8 foot tall.
vi. Most basketball players are between 7 and 8 foot.
vii. It is not hard to believe they guessed Goliath at 9 foot tall, and it’s not hard to believe they were probably right.
2. They were afraid to take the land
ii. So they wandered for 40 years and needed a Tabernacle that could be moved.
iii. A place of worship that went with them wherever they went.
b. WHY A SPECIFIC PLACE FOR GOD TO DWELL?
i. Because it wouldn’t be until after the cross that God would dwell in us.
ii. Symbolism had a great deal of importance in Israelite culture, so all of the elements within the Tabernacle would’ve had a deep meaning. It also allowed the Israelites to dwell with God and draw closer to him.
iii. Also, through the sacrificial system held at the Tabernacle (bronze altar), the Israelites learned the gravity of their sinfulness and how much they needed a Savior.
c. THE COMING TEMPLE
i. It would be the place of worship where the priests would enter the Holy of Holies once a year to be in the presence of God. (Hebrews 9:7)
ii. They could only enter once a year at what time?
1. The first ten days of Tishrei, from the first of Rosh Hashanah until Yom Kippur, which are known as the Asseret Yemei HaTeshuvah - the 'Ten Days of Repentance.'
2. So the only time one may be in God’s presence is during these days of mercy and forgiveness, days dedicated to repentance, to examining one's conscience, and, specifically, to amend one's ways.
iii. To those who believe that you only have to ask God’s forgiveness but don’t have to repent to be forgiven and dwell in His presence…think again.
iv. "King David, Solomon’s father, lived in the royal palace, but he was concerned that God’s priests still had to serve Him in the 400-year-old, portable Tabernacle from the wilderness wanderings. So David wanted to build a permanent house for God and a resting place for the Ark of the Covenant (1 Chronicles 28:2).
1. The prophet Nathan initially gave David approval to begin construction, but God spoke to Nathan in a dream. God said David would not be the one to build His house, even though David had a heart after God’s own heart.
2. David would, however, draw up the plans and accumulate materials for the building (1 Chronicles 22:2-4; 22:14-17; 29:2-9)."
III. WHY IT MATTERS TO CHRISTIANS TODAY
a. Why should Christians care about a temporary temple that existed during the Old Testament?
i. First, John 1:14 makes it clear Christ “tabernacled” with us.
ii. He came and temporarily lived with us, dwelled with us. But, just like the Tabernacle, his time on earth was temporary.
b. Christ is coming
i. Jesus will come again in a more permanent fashion. Just like the Israelites had the temporary Tabernacle but built the Temple later on as a more permanent dwelling place.
c. There is no longer a need for a Tabernacle or Temple
i. God resides in our hearts and not in a temporary dwelling space. We no longer have to offer up lambs for Sacrifice because Jesus was our Sacrifice.
ii. We no longer have to have one representative once a year to approach God. Instead, we can approach him every hour of every day and pray confidently (1 John 5:14-15).
CONCLUSION
The Lord has now instructed Moses on the building of the Ark of the Covenant, the Lampstand (Menorah), the Table of Showbread (the Bread of Presence), the Tabernacle, and its construction.
