SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

Take up Your Cross

Mark 8:36-38 34 And He summoned the crowd with His disciples, and said to them, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me. 35 For whoever wishes to save his life [soul] will lose it, but whoever loses his life [soul] for My sake and the gospel’s will save it.

36 For what does it profit a man to gain the whole world, and forfeit his soul? 37 For what will a man give in exchange for his soul?

38 For whoever is ashamed of Me and My words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when He comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels.”

INTRODUCTION

A few weeks ago, we read of Jesus telling the disciples and to those listening that we need to be mindful of the things of God, and careful not to allow our own desires, no matter how righteous or correct they may seem, to oppose the will of God.

This is exactly what Peter did. His desire was for Jesus to live, and not be turned over, arrested, beaten and tortured, and die on the cross. Which only seemed right in Peter’s eyes.

However, Jesus rebuked him, calling him Satan, for Peter wanting his own will, and becoming a stumbling block to Jesus, instead of being mindful of the will of God.

Proverbs 14:12 “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”

Jesus explains that discipleship, following Him, is costly. But Jesus also explained the value of a soul, which is of greatest value.

Truly following Jesus requires us to deny our self, our will, our desires, our perception of what we “think” is right.

Following Christ demands we bear hardships. It calls us to follow Him, no matter the cost.

Following Jesus may be difficult for some for many different reasons.

Maybe even embarrassing. Just as it was in the day of Jesus, it is today. We live in an adulterous and sinful world filled with arrogant, prideful, selfish and self-centered people.

They may ridicule or even mock you for your faith in Jesus. They may even attempt to weaken your resolve over time.

But this should not be surprising to you, that is, if you read the word of God.

2 Timothy 3:1-7 “But know this, that in the last days difficult times will come.

For men will be lovers of self, lovers of money, boastful, arrogant, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, ungrateful, unholy, unloving, opposing, devilish gossips, without self-control, without gentleness, without love for good, treacherous, irresponsible, conceited, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God,

holding to a form of religion, but having denied its power (what is the true power of God? Scripture says its salvation! They have a form of religion, but are NOT saved!).

Keep away from such men as these.

For among them are those who creep into households and take captive idle women weighed down with sins, being led on by various desires, always learning and never able to come to the full knowledge of the truth.”

I know those who are lovers of themselves. Those who love money.

It is easy to find braggers, people who are arrogant. Especially ungrateful.

There are far too many who are unholy, and without self-control.

Those who love pleasure rather than love God.

Far too many today who hold so dearly and boldly to a form of religion, to appear holy and righteous, but in all their peacocking, lack salvation.

We are commanded to keep away from these types of people.

These “religious” types seem to always be “learning,” and yet, never come to the full knowledge of the truth.

YES, these truly are the last days!

Today we read in Mark, Jesus says we should not be ashamed of Him, nor ashamed of His Words.

I.    DO NOT BE ASHAMED OF JESUS

a.   Consider who He is!

                                        i.    As confessed by those who saw, and walked with Him

1.   John the Baptist said, Jesus is “The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world” John 1:29

2.   The disciple Nathaniel said, Jesus is “The Son of God, the King of Israel!” John 1:49

3.   Nicodemus said, Jesus is “A teacher come from God” John 3:2

4.  The 5,000 Jesus fed said, “Truly the Prophet who is to come into the world” John 6:14

5.   A few weeks ago we read Peter saying about Jesus “You are Christ, the Son of the Living God” John 6:69

6.  Thomas said to Jesus, “My Lord and my God” John 20:28

7.   Paul said about Jesus, “…He who is the blessed and only Sovereign, the King of kings and Lord of lords, 16 who alone has immortality…” 1 Timothy 6:15b-16a

8.  And John said, “…Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn of the dead, and the ruler of the kings of the earth. To Him who loves us and released us from our sins by His blood…” Revelation 1:5

ii.    As professed by Jesus Himself!

1.   “I am the bread of life” John 6:35

2.   “I am the light of the world” John 8:12

3.   “I am the door” John 10:9

4.  “I am the good shepherd” John 10:11

5.   “I am the resurrection and the life” John 11:25

6.  “I am the way, the truth, and the life” John 14:6

7.   “I am the true vine” John 15:1

8.  “I AM” is the declaration from Jesus that He is the Eternal One, God – John 8:58

The legitimacy of all of these statements by those who knew Him, as well as what Jesus said about Himself, have all been established by His resurrection! (Romans 1:4)

b.   Consider what others have said of Him!

                                        i.    H. G. Wells – The author of The Time Machine (1895), The War of the Worlds (1898), The Invisible Man (1897), is attributed with the following quote, “I am a historian, I am not a believer, but I must confess as a historian that this penniless preacher from Nazareth is irrevocably the very center of history. Jesus Christ is easily the most dominant figure in all history.”

ii.    Henry G. Bosch, author of Our Daily Bread, summed it up nicely:

1.   "Socrates taught for 40 years, Plato for 50, Aristotle for 40, and Jesus for only 3. Yet the influence of Christ's 3-year ministry infinitely transcends the impact left by the combined 130 years of teaching from these men who were among the greatest philosophers of all antiquity."

2.   "Jesus painted no pictures; yet, some of the finest paintings of Raphael, Michelangelo, and Leonardo da Vinci received their inspiration from Him."

3.   "Jesus wrote no poetry; but Dante, Milton, and scores of the world's greatest poets were inspired by Him."

4.  "Jesus composed no music; still Haydn, Handel, Beethoven, Bach, and Mendelssohn reached their highest perfection of melody in the hymns, symphonies, and oratories they composed in His praise."

5.   "Every sphere of human greatness has been enriched by this humble Carpenter of Nazareth."

Jesus is the most famous person who ever lived. There is nothing He ever did to be ashamed of!

II. DO NOT BE ASHAMED OF HIS WORDS

a.   What is there in the words of Jesus to be ashamed of?

                                        i.    Jesus’ warning and teachings about hell?

1.   Matthew 10:28; Matthew 13:41-50

ii.    Jesus’ teaching about salvation in Him?

1.   John 8:24; John 14:6

iii.    What about Jesus saying that only a few would be saved? Even some who “believe” and use His name but who have not truly repented and put their trust in the gospel, will not be saved.

1.   Matthew 7:13-23

iv.    Maybe they are ashamed because Jesus doesn’t fit in with society or culture? Or maybe because Jesus taught marriage was between a man and a woman and God made them male and female? (Matthew 19:4-6; Mark 10:6-9)

When we are unwilling to believe and stand for what Jesus taught, we show our shame for the Lord.

b.   Consider the power of His words

                                        i.    John 3:34 tells us the words of Jesus are the words of God

ii.    John 6:63 tells us the words of Jesus or spirit and life

iii.    John 6:68 tells us the words of Jesus are words of eternal life

iv.    John 12:48 tells us the words of Jesus will judge mankind

                                       v.    The words of Jesus allow us to enjoy fellowship with God (John 14:21,23)

When we obey the Lord’s words, they can lead to answered prayers!

“If you abide in Me, and My words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.” John 15:7

Remember though, if you “abide in Him,” and “His words abide in you,” what you ask will never be against the will of God!

So if its not God’s will for you to win the lottery, or any other prayer that is in opposition to the will of God, forget it!

The words of Jesus GIVE US PEACE in this very troubled, chaotic, adulterous and sinful fallen world.

John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”

Are you “in Christ Jesus?”

If so, how can you be ashamed of His words?

CONCLUSION

If we step back and properly examine the actions and words of Jesus, we see, there is NO reason to be ashamed of Him!

Not of who He is, what He has done, what He is doing, or what He will one day do.

And not of His words, what they are, what they mean, and what they can accomplish in our lives, if we let them

When Jesus returns to raise the dead and judge the world, and He will, Jesus says, if we are ashamed of Him, He will be ashamed of us. (Mark 8:38)

If we live for Him and obey His words, He will glorify us! (2 Thessalonians 1:7-12)

May we forever be proud of what Jesus’ words and deeds and never put Him to shame!
