INTRODUCTION
Over the last year or so looking at the Book of Genesis, verse by verse, as well as more recently breaking down the Book of Exodus, verse by verse, I have mentioned that God’s plan of redemption through Christ Jesus, the why, the how, and the results of, are all explained by God in these Books of the Bible.
We are going to see that God is continuing to teach the Israelites, but they are reluctant to listen. Even though instructions are clear and precise, they grumble, complain, and are never happy.
This discontentment, this dissatisfied complaining attitude is upsetting to both Moses and God. After all that has been done to free them from slavery, they have the audacity to complain about the old days being better when they were slaves.
We sometimes see this in people today who attend church, or call themselves Christians, but they are missing something.
They are never satisfied with the church, the preachers, the other congregation members, and they complain about how it was better before when they weren’t attending.
Their heats have not been changed.
Sometimes this is simply because the work of the Holy Spirit takes time, sometimes longer in some. Sometimes it is because they are quenching God’s Holy Spirit and preventing change in their lives. However, sometimes, it is because a conversion has never truly taken place.
God’s Holy Spirit creates change in us, as long as we do not fight and resist Him.
Without true conversion though, we do not have God’s Holy Spirit, and we, like the Israelites in Exodus, will never be satisfied, content, nor pleased with the Works of our God for the Salvation and freeing us from the bondage of slavery to sin.
The Hebrews do not have
the benefit of the Holy Spirit, and therefore, though God freed them from the
bondage of Egypt, they still struggle with the bondage of sin in their flesh.
We can only overcome the flesh through the power of the Holy Spirit.
Today we look at the Continuing Complaining of the Israelites
SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 16 Manna & Quail
1“The whole Israelite community set out from Elim and came to the Desert of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after they had come out of Egypt. 2 In the desert the whole community grumbled against Moses and Aaron. 3 The Israelites said to them, “If only we had died by the Lord’s hand in Egypt! There we sat around pots of meat and ate all the food we wanted, but you have brought us out into this desert to starve this entire assembly to death.”
4 Then the Lord said to Moses, “I will rain down bread from heaven for you. The people are to go out each day and gather enough for that day. In this way I will test them and see whether they will follow my instructions.”
TODAY’S MESSAGE
I. GOD’S PROVISION
a. Hunger and the feeding of the flesh
i. The Hebrews were hungry and remembered days of slavery where they were fed more than they could eat.
1. When we are slaves to sin, we seek to feed the desires of our flesh
2. When we submit to those desires we are being led by our flesh
3. When we are led by the desires of our flesh, all of our choices we make in life will be to gain that which we most desire, to feed our flesh.
ii. We are called to be led by the Spirit, not the flesh
iii. Paul explains the struggle between his flesh and spirit in Romans 7:15-20
iv. The Hebrews cared more for satisfying their flesh than being thankful to God for saving them from slavery.
v. Sometimes those who have been saved from their bondage refuse to let go of the desires of their flesh being met, not realizing God’s provision is far better.
vi. When Lot and his family were saved from destruction they were instructed not to look back, but in Genesis 19:26, we read Lot’s wife “looked back” and was turned to a pillar of salt.
1. Jesus talks about the end times in Luke 17:28-33 “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 “It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day no one who is on the housetop, with possessions inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32 Remember Lot’s wife! 33 Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it, and whoever loses their life will preserve it.”
2. Whoever tries to keep their life will lose it.
vii. The Lord is telling us, when He saves us from the bondage of sin, we must not try to preserve our “old lives”, else we will lose our lives.
viii. If we “lose our life”, speaking of the old, we will preserve it!
b. The Lord says He will provide “bread from heaven”
i. Which is
1. A miraculous provision by God
2. A promise of His provision
3. A prophetic word of the Lord’s coming from heaven
4. A symbolic meaning of the Word of God
5. This is a teaching of the feeding of our Spirit by the Lord
ii. John 6:32-35 “Jesus said to them, “Very truly I tell you, it is not Moses who has given you the bread from heaven, but it is my Father who gives you the true bread from heaven. 33 For the bread of God is the bread that comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
34 “Sir,” they said, “always give us this bread.”
35 Then Jesus declared, “I am the bread of life. Whoever comes to me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.”
c. What is done by the flesh and by the spirit
i. We can measure our walk and obedience to the Lord with the simple test…
1. 2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”
2. James 1:14 “But each one is tempted when by his own evil desires he is lured away and enticed”
ii. What does walking by the spirit and flesh look like?
1. Galatians 5:19 “The acts of the flesh are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; 20 idolatry and witchcraft; hatred, discord, jealousy, fits of rage, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions 21 and envy; drunkenness, orgies, and the like. I warn you, as I did before, that those who live like this will not inherit the kingdom of God.”
2. Galatians 5:13-18;22-26 “You, my brothers and sisters, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the flesh[a]; rather, serve one another humbly in love. 14 For the entire law is fulfilled in keeping this one command: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”[b] 15 If you bite and devour each other, watch out or you will be destroyed by each other.
16 So I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. 17 For the flesh desires what is contrary to the Spirit, and the Spirit what is contrary to the flesh. They are in conflict with each other, so that you are not to do whatever you want. 18 But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law.”
“22 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law. 24 Those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires. 25 Since we live by the Spirit, let us keep in step with the Spirit. 26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other.”
iii. Examine yourselves
1. I Corinthians 11:31 “For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.”
II. THE LORD’S INSTRUCTION
a. I will test them
i. God tests us, not because He doesn’t know the outcome, but because He wants US to know!
1. Proverbs 17:3 “The crucible is for silver, and the furnace is for gold, and the Lord tests hearts.”
ii. Why God Tests
1. James 1:2-4 “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”
2. James 1:12 “Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.”
iii. But rest assured, God does not tempt
1. James 1:13 “When tempted, no one should say, “God is tempting me.” For God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does he tempt anyone;”
b. Moses relays the Lord’s instructions
i. Most listen, but some still disobey and go out on the Sabbath to gather, though there is nothing there.
ii. Disobedient, not trusting God and His provision
c. And they grumble against the Lord
i. Moses explains to them, they are not grumbling and complaining against Moses, because he is but a messenger, but they complain about God Himself!
III. HOW WE DO THE SAME TODAY
a. Our flesh and Spirit hunger
i. Both have desire
ii. Which will lead you? The one you feed most will always be stronger…
b. God’s Word, fellowship, prayer, the Holy Spirit feeds us
i. The Lord gives us His Spirit, His Word, the fellowship of the Body of Christ, worship, prayer, many of these alone will feed the spirit, all together your spirit will not fail.
ii. Matthew 19:26 “And looking at them Jesus said to them, “With people this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”
iii. Philippians 4:13 “I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.”
c. Let us Fee our Spirits and be mighty in the Body of Christ
i. Read the Word of God
ii. Pray and speak with the Lord
iii. Spend time in fellowship
iv. Worship together with the Body of Christ
v. Walk by the Spirit and you will exhibit the Lord’s light in this dark world!
CONCLUSION
The Light of the World is YOU in the Body of Christ!
You will have the Fruits of the Spirit - love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
You will have the Gifts of the Spirit to build, strengthen and edify the Body of Christ
You will have the Whole Armor of God
You will be a light in this dark world, leading others to the Truth of the Word, Salvation comes by Christ alone.
