INTRODUCTION

Over the last year or so looking at the Book of Genesis, verse by verse, as well as more recently breaking down the Book of Exodus, verse by verse, I have mentioned that God’s plan of redemption through Christ Jesus, the why, the how, and the results of, are all explained by God in these Books of the Bible.

From the fall of man and introduction of sin and separation from God in Genesis 3 resulting in the first opportunity for confession (when the Lord asked Adam and Eve what they had done), to the first animal sacrifice (shedding of blood) to cover sin (When the Lord made clothes for Adam and Eve to cover their now realized nakedness).

We have seen the coming Christ reveled through covenants between God and Abraham, the life of Isaac (the spiritual answer from God as opposed to the flesh answer of Ishmael), the lives of Jacob and Joseph, and now through Moses and the freeing of the Hebrews from slavery.

We also see God teaching of the coming Christ and covenant made through Him with God typified in the Passover and Feast of Unleavened Bread given as a Holy Day to be remembered and taught to future generations.

Everything recorded in the Old Testament is because of Genesis 3, and God’s plan to redeem, not just humankind, but the entire creation!

Remember, it is not just man that has fallen and devastatingly effected by sin. This entire world has been negatively marred and suffers because of sin. This world is a fallen world, and far from the glorious perfection of Eden.

Matthew 24:35 “Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.”

Revelation 21:1-5 “Then I saw “a new heaven and a new earth,” for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and there was no longer any sea. 2 I saw the Holy City, the new Jerusalem, coming down out of heaven from God, prepared as a bride beautifully dressed for her husband. 3 And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, “Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. 4 ‘He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away.”

5 He who was seated on the throne said, “I am making everything new!”

Today we look at the crossing of the red sea

SCRIPTURE READING

Exodus 13:1-16

“When Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them on the road through the Philistine country, though that was shorter. For God said, “If they face war, they might change their minds and return to Egypt.” 18 So God led the people around by the desert road toward the Red Sea. The Israelites went up out of Egypt ready for battle.

19 Moses took the bones of Joseph with him because Joseph had made the Israelites swear an oath. He had said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”

20 After leaving Sukkoth they camped at Etham on the edge of the desert. 21 By day the Lord went ahead of them in a pillar of cloud to guide them on their way and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day or night. 22 Neither the pillar of cloud by day nor the pillar of fire by night left its place in front of the people.”

TODAY’S MESSAGE

I.       CONSECRATE FIRSTBORN MALES

a.      Obedience the God unlocks the Kingdom

                                                 i.      Spiritual Gifts, Fruits of the Spirit, Healing, Blessings, Whole Armor of God, all the benefits of the Kingdom, belong to God and His Kingdom

ii.      They can only be obtained by belonging to the Kingdom

iii.      Obedience unlocks the door to His Kingdom

                                            iv.      Disobedience kicks you out

1.      Adam & Eve were OBEDIENT when they did not eat of the tree of knowledge

a.      During that time, they had the entire Garden of Eden (including the tree of everlasting life) at their disposal

2.      Adam & Eve were DISOBEDIENT when they ate of the tree of knowledge of good and evil

a.      They were expelled from the Kingdom after they refused to CONFESS to the Lord when Ha asked them what happened and no longer had access to the tree of everlasting life

                                               v.      We see in Exodus they need to be obedient and consecrate their firstborn sons

b.     The Hebrew Firstborn are symbolic

                                                 i.      Here, firstborn symbolizes lineage, path, future

ii.      The Lord did something with Egypt’s firstborn, now the Hebrews firstborn

iii.      Spiritual Life (opposed to Egyptian Firstborn death)

1.      Egypt symbolizes Sin and Slavery

2.      The Firstborn of Egypt is a symbol of lineage/family line

3.      Sin (acts of the flesh) lead to death

4.      In Exodus death of Egyptian firstborn is literal, but the meaning is Spiritual Death of those who live according to their flesh or in sin

iv.      Consecrating the Hebrew Firstborn Boys symbolizing life by the spirit

1.      Hebrews in covenant with God (Abrahamic)

2.      Firstborn symbolic of lineage/family line/life

3.      Obeying the Lord’s command to Consecrate (set aside/make separate)

4.      Though literally done by sacrificing a baby lamb for the son, symbolic of Christ Jesus (baby lamb) dying for your sins so you may be Consecrated/set aside/separate

5.      This is foreshadowing of Salvation through the sacrifice of Christ Jesus

c.      This Consecration is taught in the New Testament as Salvation

                                                 i.      By the sacrifice of the Lamb in our place (as in Old Testament)

ii.      We (the child) are Consecrated for God (set aside/made separate)

iii.      This obedience to the Word of God unlocks the Kingdom to us

II.   THE SEA OF REEDS (EXODUS 13:18)

a.      Reeds or Red?

                                                 i.      Does it matter? No

ii.      Reed, red, whatever the name was/is we know the general location because of the description and known landmarks

b.     The Lord went ahead of them (leading them)

                                                 i.      A pillar of smoke by day and fire by night

ii.      God led them to the Red Sea

iii.      Moses also took the bones of Joseph with them

1.      Genesis 50:25 Joseph said, “God will surely come to your aid, and then you must carry my bones up with you from this place.”

2.      That day has come

iv.      The Lord tells them exactly where to camp

c.      Further Instructions

                                                 i.      The Lord wanted to make Pharaoh think the Israelites were lost and an easy target

ii.      Egypt was after the Israelites

III.            THE CROSSING

a.      The Israelites were terrified at the Egyptian Armies (Exodus 14:10)

                                                 i.      Exodus 14:11-12 “They said to Moses, “Was it because there were no graves in Egypt that you brought us to the desert to die? What have you done to us by bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Didn’t we say to you in Egypt, ‘Leave us alone; let us serve the Egyptians’? It would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the desert!”

                                              ii.      Remember this!

b.     Do not be afraid (Exodus 14:13-14)

                                                 i.      “Moses answered the people, “Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

                                              ii.      Remember this!

c.      The Parting takes place before all

                                                 i.      The Lord Moses to (verse 16) “Raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea to divide the water so that the Israelites can go through the sea on dry ground.”

ii.      Verse 21-22 “Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and all that night the Lord drove the sea back with a strong east wind and turned it into dry land. The waters were divided, 22 and the Israelites went through the sea on dry ground, with a wall of water on their right and on their left.”

iii.      The Lord then commands Moses to do this again, and the waters returned and none of the pursuing Egyptians survived.

Now listen close to Exodus 14:30-31

“That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore. 31 And when the Israelites saw the mighty hand of the Lord displayed against the Egyptians, the people feared the Lord and put their trust in him and in Moses his servant.”

CONCLUSION

We need to see what the Lord is teaching here!

 ·        There are two kingdoms, Egypt, and Israel…Those who are not in covenant with God and those who are

 ·        These two kingdoms represent the Flesh and the Spirit

 ·        The lineage, life, future of both foreshadowed through the firstborn of each

o   Death of Egyptian firstborn (symbolic of spiritual death) for those who live by the flesh, not in covenant with God

o   Consecration of Israelites Firstborn through sacrifice of young lamb (symbolic of Christ dying to set aside/make separate an everlasting life for those who live by the spirit and are in covenant with God

 ·        The evil life of flesh and those not in covenant with God give chase to those who are consecrated in covenant with God

·        They try to stop that person from escaping the bondage and slavery of the life outside of the covenant with God, the life of the flesh, and bondage to sin

·        As Moses said to the scared Israelites trying to escape their old life (because they though it easier to stay living the way they were, in bondage as slaves)

“Do not be afraid. Stand firm and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today. The Egyptians you see today you will never see again. 14 The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.”

Crossing the Red Sea is symbolic of Baptism, with the Israelites moving from their old lives (in bondage and as slaves) to their new lives, a new creation with the former passing away.

On the other side of the sea, they were now free from the grips of Egypt, free from bondage…just as we are free from the bondage of Sin and slavery to Stan, who rules this world.

We are on the other side of the Red Sea in Christ Jesus, and nothing can touch us here in the Kingdom of God.

We are protected from sin and its bondage by the waters the Lord floods down (the Holy Spirit!)

 Moses told the Israelites, who were in covenant with God, consecrated their Firstborn, obeyed the Lord’s command to flee Egypt;

·        Do not be afraid.

·        Stand firm

·        and you will see the deliverance the Lord will bring you today.

·        The Egyptians you see today you will never see again.

·        The Lord will fight for you;

·        you need only to be still.”

The Word of God repeats these things to us in the New Testament.

 ·        Do not be afraid: Luke 12:32 (Jesus says), “Do not be afraid, little flock, for your Father has been pleased to give you the kingdom.”

 ·        Stand Firm: Galatians 5:1 “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery.”

·        The Lord will deliver you: 2 Peter 2:9 “Then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials…”

 ·        No longer slaves to Egypt (sin): Romans 6:18 “and having been freed from sin, you became slaves of righteousness.”

 ·        The Lord fights for you: Romans 8:31 "What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us?"

·        You need only to be still: Romans 12:12 “Be joyful in hope, patient in affliction, faithful in prayer.”
