INTRODUCTION

Over the last couple of weeks, we have been looking at Moses seeing the burning bush and discovering it was the Lord. Not only did the Lord appear, but He had a mission for Moses, take a message to the Pharaoh, king of Egypt.

It was from this point we see Moses coming up with excuse after excuse of why he cannot do this, and for each of his problems the Lord had a solution.

The Lord gave Moses the signs to perform and sent him on his way.

Last week we read of Moses returning to Egypt, meeting with his brother Aaron, whom he hasn’t seen in 40 years, and after explaining to Aaron what God had said and what they must do, Aaron and Moses go to the tribe elders and tell them what God said.

This is where we pick up in Exodus 5, Moses Speaks to the Pharaoh

SCRIPTURE READING

Exodus 5:1-21

“Afterward (Moses and Aaron just finished speaking with the tribe elders in the previous verses) Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said, “This is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says: ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’”

2 Pharaoh said, “Who is the Lord, that I should obey him and let Israel go? I do not know the Lord and I will not let Israel go.”

3 Then they said, “The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Now let us take a three-day journey into the wilderness to offer sacrifices to the Lord our God, or he may strike us with plagues or with the sword.”

4 But the king of Egypt said, “Moses and Aaron, why are you taking the people away from their labor? Get back to your work!” 5 Then Pharaoh said, “Look, the people of the land are now numerous, and you are stopping them from working.”

6 That same day Pharaoh gave this order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people: 7 “You are no longer to supply the people with straw for making bricks; let them go and gather their own straw. 8 But require them to make the same number of bricks as before; don’t reduce the quota. They are lazy; that is why they are crying out, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ 9 Make the work harder for the people so that they keep working and pay no attention to lies.”

10 Then the slave drivers and the overseers went out and said to the people, “This is what Pharaoh says: ‘I will not give you any more straw. 11 Go and get your own straw wherever you can find it, but your work will not be reduced at all.’” 12 So the people scattered all over Egypt to gather stubble to use for straw. 13 The slave drivers kept pressing them, saying, “Complete the work required of you for each day, just as when you had straw.” 14 And Pharaoh’s slave drivers beat the Israelite overseers they had appointed, demanding, “Why haven’t you met your quota of bricks yesterday or today, as before?”

15 Then the Israelite overseers went and appealed to Pharaoh: “Why have you treated your servants this way? 16 Your servants are given no straw, yet we are told, ‘Make bricks!’ Your servants are being beaten, but the fault is with your own people.”

17 Pharaoh said, “Lazy, that’s what you are—lazy! That is why you keep saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.’ 18 Now get to work. You will not be given any straw, yet you must produce your full quota of bricks.”

19 The Israelite overseers realized they were in trouble when they were told, “You are not to reduce the number of bricks required of you for each day.” 20 When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them, 21 and they said, “May the Lord look on you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to Pharaoh and his officials and have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

TODAY’S MESSAGE

I.       MOSES AND AARON GO TO SPEAK WITH THE PHARAOH

a.      Let my people go so they may go into the wilderness and sacrifice to the Lord

b.     Who is the Lord that I should obey him?

                                                              i.      A picture of a fallen people, enslaved, crushed beneath the power of Pharaoh with no way to free themselves

ii.      Just as we are, in the grips of sin, enslaved with no way to escape, save a savior come to our rescue!

iii.      The Israelites need Moses and the power of God just as we need Jesus and the power of God to free us from the bondage of sin!

c.      God of the Hebrews has met with us

                                                              i.      The mention of freedom causes the captor to bind his captives even more

ii.      When someone in bondage hears of the freeing grace of God through Christ Jesus, Satan tightens his grip, like God, unwilling to lose even one.

II.   WHY ARE YOU TAKING THE PEOPLE AWAY FROM THEIR LABOR?

a.      You are stopping them from working, get back to work!

b.     Pharaoh then gave the order to the slave drivers and overseers in charge of the people

                                                              i.      Do not give the workers any straw for making bricks, make them gather their own straw

ii.      Do not lower the quota of bricks per day

iii.      Many times the setting to carry out God’s Will results in Satan’s anger, with the opposition being increased.

c.      They are lazy

                                                              i.      That is why they are crying out, “let us go and sacrifice to our God.”

ii.      Make the work harder for the people so they are too busy working to pay attention to the lies (LIT: Vain Words) they are being told

1.      What vain words?

a.      Pharaoh is referring to the word “sacrifice” as being vain

b.     Satan is speaking here, calling the sacrifice to God vain

                                                                                                                                      i.      Vain means

1.      marked by futility or ineffectiveness: unsuccessful, useless

2.      having no real value: idle, worthless

3.      foolish, silly

2.      Why does Satan want to make the people think sacrifice to God is vain?

3.      Because Satan wants the slaves to think it is foolish to believe a sacrifice to God will change their situation in any way.

4.      In other words, Christ dying on the cross, as a sacrifice to God for the payment of sin is ineffective in saving you from sin, or the bondage thereof.

III.   PHARAOH’S SLAVE DRIVERS BEAT THE ISRAELITE OVERSEERS

a.      So, the Israelite overseers appealed to Pharaoh

                                                              i.      Why beat us? It is your people who stopped giving us straw and forced us to gather our own, and it is your people who still require the same quota of bricks per day even though we have far more work to do now

b.     You are lazy

                                                              i.      That is why you cry, “let us go and sacrifice to the Lord.”

ii.      Now get back to work, gather your own straw, and the brick quota per day remains the same

 c.      The Israelite overseers knew they were in trouble for speaking out as Moses told them

                                                              i.      When they left Pharaoh, they found Moses and Aaron waiting to meet them

ii.      They told Moses and Aaron, “May the Lord look upon you and judge you! You have made us obnoxious to the Pharaoh and his officials

iii.      And you have put a sword in their hands to kill us

CONCLUSION

GOD PROMISES DELIVERANCE

Exodus 5:22-23 “Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Why, Lord, why have you brought trouble on this people? Is this why you sent me? 23 Ever since I went to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has brought trouble on this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”
