INTRODUCTION
Over the last couple of weeks, we have been looking at Moses seeing the burning bush and discovering it was the Lord. Not only did the Lord appear, but He had a mission for Moses, take a message to the Pharaoh, king of Egypt.
It was from this point we see Moses coming up with excuse after excuse of why he cannot do this, and for each of his problems the Lord had a solution.
These signs the Lord gave to Moses served three purposes. First, as encouragement and support to Moses letting him know that God was with him. Secondly, as a warning to Egypt that God was with Moses and the word Moses brought, set my people free, was from God Himself. Lastly, this was a private message to Satan, who, at this time was ruling the world through the corrupt power of the Pharoah and Egypt.
The message was simple, you are a serpent that my anointed can cast away without harm. You brought sin and sickness to mankind, but I will be redemption and renewing of them, and it will be through the blood.
This is where we pick up in Exodus 4:18-31, Moses Returns to Egypt
SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 4:18-31
“18 Then Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Let me return to my own people in Egypt to see if any of them are still alive.”
Jethro said, “Go, and I wish you well.”
19 Now the Lord had said to Moses in Midian, “Go back to Egypt, for all those who wanted to kill you are dead.” 20 So Moses took his wife and sons, put them on a donkey and started back to Egypt. And he took the staff of God in his hand.
21 The Lord said to Moses, “When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. 22 Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I told you, “Let my son go, so he may worship me.” But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.’”
24 At a lodging place on the way, the Lord met Moses[b] and was about to kill him. 25 But Zipporah took a flint knife, cut off her son’s foreskin and touched Moses’ feet with it.[c] “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me,” she said. 26 So the Lord let him alone. (At that time she said “bridegroom of blood,” referring to circumcision.)
27 The Lord said to Aaron, “Go into the wilderness to meet Moses.” So he met Moses at the mountain of God and kissed him. 28 Then Moses told Aaron everything the Lord had sent him to say, and also about all the signs he had commanded him to perform.
29 Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites, 30 and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, 31 and they believed. And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.”
TODAY’S MESSAGE
I. MOSES STILL DRAGS HIS FEET
a. The Lord spoke again to Moses, “go back to Egypt…”
i. Those who wanted to kill you are dead
ii. It has been 40 years since Moses left Egypt
iii. The fact that the Lord has to say this reveals Moses was still dragging his feet and making excuses for not leaving.
iv. I am sure Moses’ reluctance would be ours if we were in the same position.
v. Can you imagine God telling you to go to Putin and tell him to stop his assault on Ukraine?
b. The Staff of God
i. The staff is just a piece of wood
ii. Its only “power” is the power God gave to Moses
iii. In Verse 21 “do all the wonders which I have put in your hand.”
iv. Hand in scripture means works or doing, the actions you take. By God saying “the wonders which I have put in your hand” simply means the abilities were specific for God’s purpose to accomplish His Will and could be taken back as easily as given.
c. Say to Pharaoh
i. The Lord said to Moses, “When you return to Egypt, see that you perform before Pharaoh all the wonders I have given you the power to do. But I will harden his heart so that he will not let the people go. 22 Then say to Pharaoh, ‘This is what the Lord says: Israel is my firstborn son, 23 and I told you, “Let my son go, so he may worship me.” But you refused to let him go; so I will kill your firstborn son.’”
ii. Perform the miracles, then give Pharoah my demands.
iii. Some feel it wasn’t fair of God to harden Pharaoh’s heart, or that it in some way removed his free will.
1. But God knows Pharaoh’s heart and only God can judge
2. All of Pharaoh’s evils by the leading and inspiration of Satan who ruled over and through him was being put to an end.
3. Pharaoh condemned himself long ago by allowing the evil one to control him.
4. This “hardening” of Pharaoh’s heart was the natural conclusion for one who has relinquished themselves to Satan and influence.
iv. We also see here the reference to the “firstborn son”
v. God telling Pharaoh that the Israelites are His, which Pharaoh would understand considering he is called Pharaoh, or son of RA
II. MOSES’ DISOBEDIENCE JUDGED
a. The Lord met with Moses and was about to kill his son
i. On the way, Moses and his family stop at an inn
ii. The Lor meets with Moses and is going to kill his son
iii. Why?
1. Because God is a just and righteous God
2. What God expects from Pharaoh (obedience) He also expects from His followers, namely Moses at this moment
3. How has Moses been disobedient?
4. He never circumcised his son
iv. Why? From the scripture reading and the transactions taking place between Moses and his wife Zipporah, it would appear she did not believe as Moses did.
v. She must not have wanted to have their son circumcised, and Moses gave in to her.
vi. But this is a sign of God’s covenant, and the instruction was given long ago by God to circumcise the children of Israel.
1. Genesis 17:10-12
b. Zipporah reluctantly circumcises their son
i. We see Zipporah cut the skin and throw it to her husband’s feet
c. Angry at Moses and his religion, she calls him the “Bridegroom of blood”
i. As a “type of Christ”, Moses is the bridegroom of blood
ii. Because it will be blood that covers the firstborn children during Passover
iii. It is the blood of the substitutional sacrifice that will cover the sins of a nation until the Messiah appears
iv. And subsequently, it will be the Blood of Christ that removes all sin
III. MOSES AND AARON SPEAK TO THE ELDERS
a. God tells Aaron, “Go into the wilderness and meet Moses”
i. Through the leading of God’s spirit, Aaron obeys and meets with Moses in the wilderness.
ii. They have not seen each other in 40 years
b. Moses explains everything to Aaron
i. Then Moses told Aaron everything the Lord had sent him to say, and also about all the signs he had commanded him to perform.
c. Moses and Aaron meet with the Elders
i. Moses and Aaron brought together all the elders of the Israelites, 30 and Aaron told them everything the Lord had said to Moses. He also performed the signs before the people, 31 and they believed. And when they heard that the Lord was concerned about them and had seen their misery, they bowed down and worshiped.
CONCLUSION
Though he was slow to move, reluctant to obey, and needed pushing along the way, Moses finally reaches Egypt, repents of his disobedience to the Word of God (his son is circumcised), and obeys God’s instructions.
He met with Aaron, and they meet with the Elders, and everything went just as God had said it would. The Elders listened and knew, it was God who sent Moses, and they would soon be saved from the bondage of Egypt and set free.
