SERMON
INTRODUCTION
The
Book of Revelation, or the Revelation of Christ, is the most challenging book
in the bible.
Because
of this fact, many avoid it or ignore it altogether. Some fear lack of
understanding; others afraid to misinterpret, which I guess it is better to
avoid than dive in and get it completely wrong.
Many
times, when a new believer comes to me for direction, they want to jump right
into Revelation and find out what’s to come.
This
is equivalent to deciding one day to learn Mandarin and sitting down to author
a novel in Chinese that very same day.
Or,
a kindergartner learning how to count, and then trying to calculate quantum
mechanics calculations.
The
words in Revelation have caused much debate on rapture, judgment, even some who
claim John was writing about the events in his day in code rather than Jesus
Christ revealing to him about the coming events and Judgment.
A
special blessing is promised to those who read Revelation.
Although
it may be a difficult book, we could all use a special blessing, reading this
is good for us all, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will take the
Revelation of Christ in small portions and gain understanding, little by
little.

THE THINGS WHICH SHALL BE – The Coming Judgment
SCRIPTURE READING
Revelation 16:1-7
Then
I heard a loud voice from the temple saying to the seven angels, “Go, pour out
the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the earth.”
2
The first angel went and poured out his bowl on the land, and ugly, festering
sores broke out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its
image.
3
The second angel poured out his bowl on the sea, and it turned into blood like
that of a dead person, and every living thing in the sea died.
4
The third angel poured out his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and
they became blood. 5 Then I heard the angel in charge of the waters say:
“You
are just in these judgments, O Holy One,
you who are and who were;
6
for
they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,
and
you have given them blood to drink as they deserve.”
7
And I heard the altar respond:
“Yes,
Lord God Almighty,
true and just are your judgments.”
I.
A LOUD VOICE FROM THE TEMPLE
a.
Remember the symbolism of “loud”
i. “I heard a loud voice…”
ii. Loud can mean, powerful in
strength, authority in the one who speaks, loudness as in volume, or all of the
above.
iii. Here, I believe it speaks as
all of the above
iv. It is loud, powerful,
authoritative, and it is a “command” by the One who has authority to command
such an order.
b.
It came from the Temple
i. Further proof of who is
speaking
ii. The judge of all creation,
the one who created all and everything existing created by Him
iii. Jesus
c.
This is the one who is worthy, whose judgments are
just and true
i. Vs 7
ii. a loud voice from the temple
saying to the seven angels, “Go, pour out the seven bowls of God’s wrath on the
earth.”
II.
THE FIRST TWO BOWLS
a.
Bowl One of God’s Wrath is poured out
i. The first angel went and
poured out his bowl on the land
ii. Ugly, festering sores broke
out on the people who had the mark of the beast and worshiped its image.
b.
Bowl Two of God’s Wrath is poured out
i. The second angel poured out
his bowl on the sea
ii. It turned into blood like
that of a dead person, and every living thing in the sea died.
c.
The Results
i. Those who had the mark of
the beast AND worshipped its image were the first to be judged
ii. Then the sea turned “blood”
like that of a “dead” person and everything in the sea died (sea meaning
all oceans)
1. This Second Bowl that was poured
out must be like a disease which killed everything, causing the dead in the sea
to bloat and rot and festering puss filled bloody bodies to burst filling the
seas and making it appear as coagulated dark soupy dead-man’s blood.
III.
THE THIRD BOWL
a.
Bowl Three of God’s Wrath is poured out
i. The third angel poured out
his bowl on the rivers and springs of water, and they became blood.
ii. Apparently while the Second
plague was aimed at the oceans, the third took care of the rivers and springs
(meaning all fresh water)
b.
The Results
i. John then hears this after
the Third Bowl was poured out
ii. Then I heard the angel in
charge of the waters say:
“You
are just in these judgments, O Holy One,
you
who are and who were;
for
they have shed the blood of your holy people and your prophets,
and you have given them blood to drink as they
deserve.”
iii. The first three bowls of
God’s Wrath judges specific targets in a specific way
1. “They” shed the blood of
your holy people and your prophets
a. All those who serve the
beast
2. You give them blood to drink
as they deserve
a. This is what the beast
(Satan, Antichrist & False Prophet) wanted
b. This “blood” is their unholy
communion
c. Their covenant that they
must drink and take part of
d. Refusing the Blood of
Christ, repentance and drinking into the New Covenant with God, all those who
follow the Beast will now have a never-ending covenant with him
e. An eternal afterlife
reserved for those who have turned against their first abode, or against God
and His Salvation
c.
The Altar Responds
i. And I heard the altar
respond:
“Yes,
Lord God Almighty,
true and just are your judgments.”
ii. Why “the altar”?
1. This represents the
sacrifice of the Lamb
2. The “blood” of Christ
3. The “True” communion
4. The Covenant with God
through Christ
iii. The Altar (the “blood shed
for remission of our sins”) acknowledges that God’s Wrath which poured out the
blood of judgment for the enemy of God is “True” and “Just”
iv. True and just as in, they
worked for it, they desired this path, and they will now eat the fruits of
their labors.
CONCLUSION
–
The Beast (unholy trinity
– Satan, Antichrist and False Prophet), and all those who follow them now have
their covenant in blood, and their covenant (just as ours with Christ through
His blood) will be everlasting judgment.
