Today is Sunday. November 9th, 2025

INTRODUCTION

Last Sunday we looked at the second time Jesus fed the multitudes, looking deeper into the spiritual meaning of the event, and at the end of our scripture reading we see something interesting.

Mark 8:12 “And sighing deeply in His spirit, He *said, “Why does this generation seek a sign (or miracle)? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.”

We looked at the dangers for those who seek after signs, wonders, and miracles, and how Satan imitates with ease, signs and wonders, and scripture even tells us, in the end times, many will be fooled by the signs and wonders of the antichrist, including some of the elect.

We also looked at many scriptures in the Old and New Testaments, revealing that signs and wonders are not the true power of God (because they can be imitated), but the true power of God is Salvation. The one thing no one and nothing can imitate. Salvation is found in one alone, God.

All of the signs were mimicked before Pharaoh by his sorcerers, save one. The Salvation of God’s people. There was nothing the magicians could do to bring the Hebrews back after God saved them.

Matthew 12:39 Jesus said, An evil and adulterous generation eagerly seeks for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet;”

The words of Jesus make it clear, signs, wonders, and miracles are only sought after by an evil and adulterous generation.

Romans 1:16 Paul states, “I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Gentile.”

Salvation through the gospel is the true power of God, not signs and wonders. Jesus began and ended His ministry on earth with, Repent and put your trust in the gospel.

But this was last week. Why look at verse 12 again this week? Because of something else, I want to examine more closely. Verse 12 begins with Jesus “sighing deeply within His spirit,” because they wanted a sign or miracle.

Remember, Jesus responded that no sign would be given.

Matthew 12:39 Jesus says, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign; and yet no sign will be given to it but the sign of Jonah the prophet.”

What is the sign of Jonah we have for our generation? Jesus, three days dead in the tomb and resurrected by God. That’s your sign. That’s your miracle.

So, Jesus sighed deeply because they had the word, studied the word, taught the word, but did not believe or understand the word. They were not living in faith, but in a religious world they had created in their own vain imaginations.

How many here today have the word of God, yet create for themselves their own version of Christianity?

How many resist or even refuse to believe and live by what the word of God says? You don’t follow Him as you should.

Have you ever considered the reaction of Jesus to your behavior?

Jesus sighs deeply within His spirit when we put off obeying the gospel of Christ. When we fail to trust and obey Him in our daily walk.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

Mark 8:11-13
11 And the Pharisees came out and began to argue with Him, seeking from Him a sign from heaven [a miracle], testing Him.

12 And sighing deeply in His spirit, He *said, “Why does this generation seek a sign? Truly I say to you, no sign will be given to this generation.” 13 And leaving them, He again embarked and went away to the other side.

I.           WHAT EXACTLY IS TAKING PLACE HERE?

a.  The Pharisees (Sadducee's were also present, according to Matthew 16:1) demanded a sign.

                                              i.    They argued with Jesus

ii.    Challenging Him, just as they have done before

1.  Mark 2:6-7

2.  Mark 2:16

3.  Mark 3:22

4.  Mark 7:1-2

                                          iii.    Demanding a sign

1.  Maybe a sign from heaven like in Joshua 10:12-14 when God stopped the sun and moon

2.  As if they had not already seen and heard of all the miracles Jesus had already done.

3.  They tested Him, I believe, in hopes He would fail by the way they continuously challenged Him and would not accept the things which He had already done.

a.  Nothing was ever “proof enough” for them.

b.  And Jesus sighed deeply in His spirit

                                              i.    Anguish from deep within

ii.    The word “spirit” here means “inner being” or “heart,” not the Spirit of God.

iii.    He was deeply disappointed with the ones who had the truth within their hands, yet lived as the lost sinners of the world.

1.  Sound familiar?

c.  There were many other times in scripture, Jesus had similar responses

                                              i.    Grieved by the hardness of hearts Mark 3:5

ii.    Sighed when He healed the deaf mute Mark 7:34

iii.    Groaned in His spirit, seeing the grief of others John 11:33

iv.    Wept over the city of Jerusalem Luke 19:41-44

                                            v.    And there were many accounts where Jesus was upset with the disciples for their lack of belief, or lack of understanding.

1.  Do you not yet perceive or understand? Mark 8:17-18

2.  O unbelieving generation, how long shall I be with you? How long shall I bear with you? Mark 9:19

3.  O foolish ones and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken! Luke 24:25

4.  And immediately Jesus stretched out His hand and took hold of him [Peter], and said to him, “You of little faith, why did you doubt?” Matthew 14:31

II.       JESUS OBSERVES AND REACTS TO OUR BEHAVIOR

a.  Just as He observed the behavior of Saul of Tarsus

Acts 9:3-5 “And as he was traveling, it happened that when he was approaching Damascus, suddenly a light from heaven flashed around him; and falling to the ground, he heard a voice saying to him, “Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?” And he said, “Who are You, Lord?” And He said, “I am Jesus whom you are persecuting,”

1.  Was Saul allowed to live however he chose simply because He was a Zealot for God and studied under the greatest teacher of their day and devoted himself completely to God?

2.  Then why do so many think they can today?

3.  Saul had to repent, and receive salvation by putting his trust in the gospel of Jesus Christ, and so do we.

ii.    Let us remember in Revelation the letters to the seven churches by our Lord Jesus!

1.  HE KNEW THEIR WORKS!

a.  Revelation 2:2,9,13,19

b.  Revelation 3:1,8,15

2.  HE REVEALED FAULT WHEN HE FOUND IT!

a.  Revelation 2:4,14,20

b.  Revelation 3:2,16

b.  And today, Jesus sighs deeply when we

                                              i.    Refuse to obey His gospel, again and again Matthew 11:28-30

ii.    When our conduct is no different than the world Matthew 5:20

iii.    When our love is no different than that of sinners Matthew 5:44-48

iv.    When the Kingdom of God is not our priority in life Matthew 6:33

                                            v.    When tribulation or persecution cause us to stumble Matthew 13:20-21

vi.    When anxiety or materialism makes us unfruitful Matthew 13:22

vii.    When discouragement leads to us abandoning prayer Luke 18:1

viii.    When tradition displace keeping the commands of God Mark 7:7,9

ix.    When denominationalism defeats His prayer for unity John 17:20-21

                                            x.    When love of the world replaces love for the Father in Heaven 1 John 2:15-17

CONCLUSION

From the deep sigh of Jesus, we learn that Jesus cares deeply for us. If He didn’t, He would not sigh; if He didn’t care deeply, He would not correct, like the letters to the seven churches.

Revelation 3:15-22 ‘I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish that you were cold or hot. 16 So because you are lukewarm, and neither hot nor cold, I will vomit you out of My mouth.

17 Because you say, “I am rich, and have become wealthy, and have need of nothing,” and you do not know that you are wretched and pitiable and poor and blind and naked. 18 I advise you to buy from Me gold refined by fire so that you may become rich, and white garments so that you may clothe yourself, and that the shame of your nakedness will not be manifested; and eye salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see.

19 Those whom I love, I reprove and discipline.

Therefore, be zealous and repent.

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and will dine with him, and he with Me. 21 He who overcomes, I will grant to him to sit down with Me on My throne, as I also overcame and sat down with My Father on His throne. 22 He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches.’”

Jesus stands ready to save us from our sins. To cover us with the White Garment (Holy Spirit) so that our sins will not be seen on Judgment Day. God will see the righteousness of Christ on that day.

And because Jesus cares so deeply for us, He also stands ready to reprove and correct us NOW with discipline, so that we correct our path, and remain on the narrow path that leads to life, whom Jesus said few will find.

Luke 13:22b-25 “…someone said to Him, “Lord, are there just a few who are being saved?” And He said to them, 24 “Strive to enter through the narrow door, for many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able. 25 Once the head of the house gets up and shuts the door, and you begin to stand outside and knock on the door, saying, ‘Lord, open up to us!’ then He will answer and say to you, ‘I do not know where you are from.’

The day will come when the head of the house of God will close the door, and no more will enter into it. Whether it be by coming Judgment Day or when you die.

So do not wait. Repent, and put your trust in the gospel. Submit to the Spirit of God, and obey what Jesus commands.
