INTRODUCTION

To catch everyone up to where we are in the Gospel of Mark, John the Baptist had preached of the coming Lord, preparing the way for the Lord. Jesus was baptized and introduced to Israel as the Lamb of God.

Immediately after His baptism, Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness, where he faced temptation, which He overcame, thus preparing Him to face the difficult times ahead.

Jesus began His public ministry preaching repentance and placing your trust in the gospel for the coming Kingdom of God.

Last week, we read of Jesus choosing the first four disciples who would eventually carry on the work of Jesus.

Now, we will discover in the text the things Jesus “did” and the things Jesus “taught.”

Our Scripture reading today reveals that when people heard Jesus, they immediately noticed something different. He taught with authority.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE

Mark 1:21-28

“And they [Jesus and the first four disciples, Simon, Andrew, James & John] *went into Capernaum; and immediately on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and began to teach. 22 And they were astonished at His teaching; for He was teaching them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.

23 And immediately there was a man in their synagogue with an unclean spirit; and he cried out, 24 saying, “What do we have to do with You, Jesus the Nazarene? Have You come to destroy us? I know who You are—the Holy One of God!”

25 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, “Be quiet, and come out of him!” 26 And throwing him into convulsions, the unclean spirit cried out with a loud voice and came out of him. 27 And they were all amazed, so that they were arguing among themselves, saying, “What is this? A new teaching with authority! He commands even the unclean spirits, and they obey Him.”

28 And immediately the news about Him spread everywhere into all the surrounding district of Galilee.”

I.    TEACHING AS ONE HAVING AUTHORITY

a.   The setting of His teaching

                                   i.    Capernaum was on the northwest shore of Galilee, where Jesus lived

1.   Matthew 4:12-13

ii.    It was the Sabbath, and they were in a Synagogue.

1.   The Law of Moses was still in effect, so as an observant Jew, Jesus kept the Sabbath.

2.   The Synagogue on the Sabbath provided a ready audience.

iii.    Luke gives a detailed description of what it was like when Jesus spoke in a Synagogue at Nazareth in Luke 4:16-22

1.   “And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up, and as was His custom, He entered the synagogue on the Sabbath and stood up to read. 17 And the scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to Him. And He opened the scroll and found the place where it was written,

18 “The Spirit of Yahweh is upon Me,

Because He anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor.

He has sent Me to proclaim release to the captives,

And recovery of sight to the blind,

To set free those who are oppressed,

19 To proclaim the favorable year of Yahweh.”

20 And He closed the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down, and the eyes of all in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture has been fulfilled in your hearing.” 22 And all were speaking well of Him and marveling at the words of grace which were coming forth from His lips, and they were saying, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”

iv.    Teaching in the Synagogues became part of Jesus’ ministry.

1.   “And He *said to them, “Let us go elsewhere, to the towns nearby, so that I may preach there also; for that is what I came out for.” 39 And He went, preaching in their synagogues throughout all Galilee and casting out the demons.” Mark 1:38-39

b.   The manner of His teaching

                                   i.    The preaching and teaching of Jesus astonished people

1.   Mark 1:22

2.   Matthew 7:28-29

ii.    Look at John 7:40-52 “Some of the crowd therefore, when they heard these words, were saying, “This truly is the Prophet.”

41 Others were saying, “This is the Christ.”

Still others were saying, “No, for is the Christ going to come from Galilee? 42 Has not the Scripture said that the Christ comes from the seed of David and from Bethlehem, the village where David was?

43 So a division occurred in the crowd because of Him. 44 Some of them were wanting to seize Him, but no one laid hands on Him.

45 The officers then came to the chief priests and Pharisees, and they said to them, “Why did you not bring Him?” 46 The officers answered, “Never has a man spoken like this!” 47 The Pharisees then answered them, “Have you also been led astray? 48 Have any of the rulers or Pharisees believed in Him? 49 But this crowd which does not know the Law is accursed.” 50 Nicodemus (he who came to Him before), being one of them, *said to them, 51 “Does our Law judge a man unless it first hears from him and knows what he is doing?” 52 They answered him, “Are you also from Galilee? Search and see that no prophet arises out of Galilee.”

1.   When the Lord preached (in sinless perfection as the Lord Himself), we see some believed He was a prophet, some believed He was the Messiah/Christ, and some argued He could not be the Savior.

c.    Because He taught as one having authority, unlike the scribes

                                   i.    Scribes would quote well-known rabbis as their authority for what they taught

ii.    But Jesus would say things like, “But I say to you…”

1.   Matthew 5:27-28

2.   Matthew 5:31-32

3.   Matthew 19:8-9

iii.    Jesus spoke that way because He had authority, even to forgive sins (Mark 2:10)

But it wasn’t just the manner of His teaching. Jesus complimented His teaching with miraculous signs.

II.  TEACHING AS ONE SHOWING AUTHORITY

a.   The power of His authority

                                   i.    Demonstrated by casting out an unclean spirit in Mark 1:23-26

1.   In a man who was in the synagogue

2.   A spirit who knew Jesus’ true identity as the Holy One of God

3.   Jesus rebuked him and cast him out

                                ii.    What are unclean spirits?

1.   The Bible does not clearly state, but their reality is acknowledged.

2.   Some think they are fallen angels; however, Jude 1:6 “And angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has kept in eternal bonds under darkness [unperceived] for the judgment of the great day,”

a.   They are in chains awaiting Judgment Day, and we cannot “perceive” them.

3.   2 Peter 2:4 “For if God did not spare angels who sinned, but cast them into the pit [Tartarus]  and delivered them to chains of darkness, being kept for judgment;”

a.   Anything other than stating unclean spirits exist, can possess the unsaved, oppress and torment those who are saved but wander from the Truth or fellowship is nothing more than conjecture and speculation and should not be taught.

iii.    Demonic activity (of unclean spirits) appears in waves in Scripture.

1.   There is far more recorded demonic activity during Jesus’ life than at any other time in biblical history (Baker’s Evangelical Dictionary)

iv.    Jesus later explained His casting out of demons was evidence of the coming rule or reign of God in Matthew 12:28

Jesus proved He had authority by casting out the unclean spirit.

b.   The reaction to His authority

                                   i.    The people in the synagogue were amazed

1.   They wonder what new doctrine is being revealed

2.   The purpose of such signs, according to Jesus, was to reveal and confirm that the doctrine He was teaching was from God.

a.   Mark 16:17-20

b.   Hebrews 2:1-4 “For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away. 2 For if the word spoken through angels proved unalterable, and every trespass and disobedience received a just penalty, 3 how will we escape if we neglect so great a salvation?

That salvation, first spoken by the Lord, was confirmed to us by those who heard, 4 God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

3.   They understood that Jesus not only spoke with authority, He acted with authority.

ii.    We read in Mark 1:28 that the fame of Jesus spread throughout Galilee.

1.   Which is to be expected considering the situation and events

2.   This fame would later make things difficult for Jesus

a.   Mark 1:33

b.   Mark 1:45 “But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but stayed out in desolate areas; and they were coming to Him from everywhere.”

The people were amazed, but they understood the significance of the miracle. This man, Jesus, was bringing a NEW revelation. A NEW doctrine. A NEW Covenant!

CONCLUSION

Jesus was a teacher with authority, power, and miraculous signs that proved His authority to teach this NEW doctrine of Salvation.

The people realized He was teaching a new doctrine and recognized the importance of what He taught.

When people allow “signs” to be their focus, they can easily be led astray.

Remember Hebrews 2:1 “For this reason we must pay much closer attention to what we have heard, lest we drift away.”

Matthew 24:4 “Jesus answered and said to them, “See to it that no one deceives you.”

It is YOUR responsibility that no one deceives you and leads you astray!

Jesus says so!

Scripture tells us how we can know if we are being led astray!

1.    If you are being discouraged from reading the Bible (1 John 2:27; John 14:26)

2.    If you believe God approves of everything you think, say, and do (James 1:26; 2 Corinthians 10:5; Titus 3:9)

3.    If you believe rules or laws change people’s hearts (John 1:17; Galatians 5:4)

4.    If you are a stumbling block in someone else’s life (Matthew 18:7; Romans 14:13)

5.    You’re not living what you say you believe (Romans 8:5; Romans 6:2)
