SERMON
INTRODUCTION
The
Book of Revelation, or the Revelation of Christ, is the most challenging book
in the bible.
Because
of this fact, many avoid it or ignore it altogether. Some fear lack of
understanding; others afraid to misinterpret, which I guess it is better to
avoid than dive in and get it completely wrong.
Many
times, when a new believer comes to me for direction, they want to jump right
into Revelation and find out what’s to come.
This
is equivalent to deciding one day to learn Mandarin and sitting down to author
a novel in Chinese that very same day.
Or,
a kindergartner learning how to count, and then trying to calculate quantum
mechanics calculations.
The
words in Revelation have caused much debate on rapture, judgment, even some who
claim John was writing about the events in his day in code rather than Jesus
Christ revealing to him about the coming events and Judgment.
A
special blessing is promised to those who read Revelation.
Although
it may be a difficult book, we could all use a special blessing, reading this
is good for us all, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will take the
Revelation of Christ in small portions and gain understanding, little by
little.

SCRIPTURE READING
Revelation 12:10-17
Then
I heard a loud voice in heaven say:
“Now
have come the salvation and the power
and the kingdom of our God,
and the authority of his Messiah.
For
the accuser of our brothers and sisters,
who accuses them before our God day and
night,
has been hurled down.
11
They
triumphed over him
by the blood of the Lamb
and by the word of their testimony;
they
did not love their lives so much
as to shrink from death.
12
Therefore
rejoice, you heavens
and you who dwell in them!
But
woe to the earth and the sea,
because the devil has gone down to you!
He
is filled with fury,
because he knows that his time is short.”
13
When the dragon saw that he had been hurled to the earth, he pursued the woman
who had given birth to the male child. 14 The woman was given the two wings of
a great eagle, so that she might fly to the place prepared for her in the
wilderness, where she would be taken care of for a time, times and half a time,
out of the serpent’s reach. 15 Then from his mouth the serpent spewed water
like a river, to overtake the woman and sweep her away with the torrent. 16 But
the earth helped the woman by opening its mouth and swallowing the river that
the dragon had spewed out of his mouth. 17 Then the dragon was enraged at the
woman and went off to wage war against the rest of her offspring—those who keep
God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.
I.
I HEARD A LOUD VOICE IN HEAVEN SAY
a.
Now have come the salvation and the power and the
Kingdom of our God
i. The Lord’s prayer revealed
ii. Thy “Kingdom come”, “Thy
Will be Done on earth”
iii. “The power, the Kingdom, the
glory, Amen!”
b.
The authority of His Messiah
i. Everything we are, do or
accomplish is in the authority of Jesus and His name!
c.
The accuser has been hurled down
i. When the Woman gave birth to
the Messiah Jesus (Revelation 12:5a) and Jesus paid the debt of sin (Revelation
12:5b) a war broke out in
heaven
ii. God dealt with sin on earth
caused by the devil in Genesis 3 with Christ going to the cross, and dealt with the
devils continuous sin in heaven (gaining angelic followers 1/3 of heaven Revelation
12:4, as well as
continuously accusing God’s people before the throne Revelation
12:10, and trying to raise
himself up to be a god Isaiah 14:12-15)
iii. The cross not only gave us
power over the devil and sin, but also cast him down and prevented him from
entering heaven or stand before God’s throne to accuse God’s people.
iv. So rejoice, you heavens and
you who dwell in them!
(Because the accuser and his followers are gone!)
v. But woe (the third woe) to the
earth and sea because the devil has gone down to you and he is filled with
fury, because he knows his time is short!
II.
WHEN THE DRAGON SAW THAT HE HAD BEEN HURLED TO THE
EARTH
a.
He went after the woman (Israelites/Jews) who had
given birth to the male child
i. One sin entered the world (Genesis 3 through disobedience) the
devil had authority and was a ruler, leading his army of 1/3 of heaven, ruling
over the people of earth who lived in disobedience to God, continuously
accusing them before God in heaven so he could gain them as his “legally”
ii. He tried to prevent the
birth of Jesus, knowing that through Him, sin would have no power over the
people, and they could once again belong to the Lord. Revelation
12:3-4
iii. But he failed, so he went
after the Jews and tried to destroy them for being God’s people
b.
The Woman was given (by the power of God) the two
wings of a great eagle
i. So that she (Israelite's)
might fly to the place prepared for her in the wilderness
c.
Here she would be taken care of out of the serpents
reach
III.
FROM THE SERPENTS MOUTH SPEWED WATER TO OVERTAKE THE
WOMAN
a.
When the devil was cast down and saw he didn’t prevent
Jesus’ birth, and couldn’t destroy the Jews, he hatched another evil scheme
i. The water spewing from the serpent’s
mouth like a river to overtake the woman and sweep her away with a torrent is
false teachings!
ii. There is a spring of life in
the Word of God, but these torrents from the serpents mouth is ALL of the false
teachings, false gods, false systems of belief that the devil flooded the earth
with in hopes of keeping people from the Truth of God’s Word.
b.
But the earth helped the woman (Jews) by opening its
mouth and swallowing the river that the dragon spewed out.
i. I believe that the earth
helping the woman is talked about here;
1. Psalm
66:4
“All the earth worships you and sings praises to you; they sing praises to your
name.”
2. Psalm
19:1
“The heavens declare the glory of God, and the sky above proclaims his handiwork.”
3. Colossians
1:16
“For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and
invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things
were created through him and for him.”
ii. All the earth, because it
was created by the Lord, sings praises and is proof of Him and His glory, and
anyone who seeks the Truth, it will be revealed to them through creation
discrediting all the falsehoods the serpent can imagine.
c.
The dragon was then enraged (because he failed once
more)
i. Enraged at the Jews because
his plan of spewing tons of false religions and doctrines failed to work, the
devil decides to wage war against “the rest of her offspring”
ii. Who are the “rest of her
offspring”?
1. Revelation
12:17b
“those who keep God’s commands and hold fast their testimony about Jesus.”
CONCLUSION
–
Why is the devil after
Christians?
He convinced 1/3 of the
angels in heaven to follow him, took control over many of the earth through sin
which causes separation between God and His people, continuously accused people
of sin before God to get control of them for his own purposes, and he knew the
savior was coming.
The devil tried to stop
Jesus from being born, but that didn’t work, and sin no longer had dominion
over followers of Christ, and the devil was cast out of heaven with his
followers, never to be able to accuse anyone before the throne of God again.
Angry, he tried to kill
off the Jews, and failed because of God’s provision and protection.
So he now goes after “the
rest of her offspring”, which are those who keep God’s commands and hold
fast their testimony about Jesus.
Next week we will look at
“The Beast out of the Sea”
