INTRODUCTION
Last week we talked about Moses’ father-in-law Jethro visiting and bringing Moses’ wife and sons back to him in the wilderness. If you remember, somewhere around Exodus chapter 3, Moses sent his wife and children back to Midian because he did not want to take them to Egypt when he faced Pharaoh.
Jethro, a priest of Midian, acknowledges after seeing what the Lord had done, that the Lord is truly God of all. He makes an offering and feasts with Moses, Aaron and the elders.
The next morning, Jethro witnesses what Moses’ daily life is like. Trying to serve as a judge for all the people. From sunrise to sunset, he listened to their complaints and judged accordingly.
Jethro warned Moses that this was far too much for one man, and suggested delegating authority to me who feared God, and hated wickedness. Moses did just that, and created judges for the people, and from that point on, only the difficult cases would be brought to him to be judged.
Another thing that was established at this time was an education system, to teach the people what God expected from them, and how they were to live and behave.
This brings us to Moses and his trip to Mount Sinai to speak with God.
Today we examine Moses and Mount Sinai
SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 19
"On the first day of the third month after the Israelites left Egypt—on that very day—they came to the Desert of Sinai. 2 After they set out from Rephidim, they entered the Desert of Sinai, and Israel camped there in the desert in front of the mountain.
3 Then Moses went up to God, and the Lord called to him from the mountain and said, “This is what you are to say to the descendants of Jacob and what you are to tell the people of Israel: 4 ‘You yourselves have seen what I did to Egypt, and how I carried you on eagles’ wings and brought you to myself. 5 Now if you obey me fully and keep my covenant, then out of all nations you will be my treasured possession. Although the whole earth is mine, 6 you[a] will be for me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.’ These are the words you are to speak to the Israelites.”
TODAY'S MESSAGE
I. TWO MONTHS AFTER LEAVING EGYPT
a. Two months after leaving Egypt
i. The Lord instructs Moses to tell the people
1. You witnessed what I did to Egypt
2. How I carried you on eagles’ wings to myself
ii. Here comes the conditional scripture!
1. “IF” you obey me fully and keep my covenant
2. “THEN” out of all nations you will be my treasured possession
iii. Although the whole earth is mine, you will be a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.
iv. These are the words you are to tell the Israelites
b. Moses returned to the Elders
i. Moses called the elders all together and told them what God has said, to which they replied, “We will all do everything the Lord said.”
ii. So, Moses returned to the mountain to tell the Lord the peoples response
c. The command, Obedience & the Kingdom of God
i. What we see here is a repeating theme with God.
ii. He wants to bless, provide, help us, however we must be part of His kingdom.
1. For that, we need obedience to Him, which in turn means we need a command to obey!
iii. I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so the people will hear me speaking with you and will put their trust in you.
1. Remember, Moses typifies Christ.
2. God is sending Moses to the people from the mountain, and they are to put their trust in him.
3. This represents God the Father sending Jesus from heaven to the people for them to put their trust in Him.
II. THE LORD INSTRUCTS MOSES
a. Go to the people and consecrate them
i. The Lord says to Moses
1. Go and consecrate the people
2. Have them wash their clothes
3. And be ready on the third day
ii. We see the references to the Lord and His work to bring Salvation.
1. Moses, typifying Christ, consecrates the people, just like Jesus consecrates us and sets us apart for God.
2. Washing their clothes is symbolic of the washing of the Holy Spirit, our garments becoming white before we face Judgment.
3. And we all know what took place on the third day, the resurrection which makes this possible!
b. When the rams horn sounds
i. In Exodus 19:12-13 the Lord instructs Moses that no one is to even touch the mountain.
ii. They cannot even approach it until the trumpet blast.
iii. This is foretelling of the Rapture, and the blowing of the trumpets calling God’s people to gather before Him.
iv. Only then may they approach, and by no other means!
c. The Lord is clear here
i. If anyone man or beast tries to get to the mountain, they will be put to death.
ii. Moses then instructs the people and states in verse 15 “abstain from sexual relations”
iii. Why? Because this is allegorically when the bridegroom (Christ) comes for His Bride, the Church.
1. We are presented to Him as pure
2. “Let us rejoice and be glad and give the glory to Him, for the marriage of the Lamb has come and His bride has made herself ready.” It was given to her to clothe herself in fine linen, bright and clean; for the fine linen is the righteous acts of the saints.” Revelation 19:7-8
3. “…Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her 26 to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word, 27 and to present her to himself as a radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless” Ephesians 5:25b-27
III. ON THE THIRD DAY
a. The trumpet
i. We know the third day to represent the day the Lord rose from the grave and sealed those from days in the past and days in the future to be consecrated unto God the Father.
ii. Now listen to what the scripture says about the trumpet blast which allegorically speaks of the rapture and coming judgment.
1. Thunder and lightning and a thick cloud cover the mountain and a loud blast of the trumpet.
2. Moses (Christ typified) led the people to meet God on the mountain covered in smoke because the Lord descended in fire.
a. The Lord descending in fire, fire is judgment, and this is what falls upon the earth after the rapture.
b. We too will stand judgment as well.
c. The first judgment will be for those who belong to the Lord
d. The second is for those who reject Him
b. The Judgment
i. In verse 20 we read the Lord descended upon the mountain top and called Moses, instructing him to go down to the people and warn them of the fire (judgment)
ii. Just as God sent Jesus down to the people to warn them of the coming judgment!
c. Warn the people
i. Warn them
1. They cannot force their way onto the mountain
2. If they do, they will perish
3. EVEN THE PRIESTS must consecrate themselves! Or the Lord will break out against them.
CONCLUSION
It is evident here in scripture that God has moved the people in a way that not only teaches them in their present age, but also as an allegorical teaching of the coming of Christ, and the last days of Judgment.
God is the Same Today, as Yesterday, as Tomorrow
