INTRODUCTION

We began a new series two weeks ago looking at the second book of the Bible, The Exodus. In our first sermon, we examined how the book of Exodus is divided into two major portions which include the first portion, a narrative from chapters 1-19, and the second, the legislative portion.

Within the first portion we are looking at the first of three parts, generally referred to as Bondage. In later sermons, we will discuss the other two portions, redemption, and education.

The first two chapters of Exodus addresses the bondage portion beginning with the list of families in Goshen Egypt at the time, and a description of their oppression by a Pharaoh who either does not remember Joseph or does not care about what God accomplished through Joseph, which includes saving Egypt from the destruction of a seven-year famine.

Last week we looked at Egypt (who is the allegorical representation of sin) make a demand to the Hebrew midwives to kill all sons who were born to the Israelites. This is the first record of a government legalizing abortion as a means of population control.

Exodus 1:21 tells us that they feared God more than man, so God blessed them.

An angered Pharaoh who did not get his way then decreed that every boy born must be thrown into the Nile.

Today we will be looking at the remainder of Exodus 2:1-10 The Birth of Moses

SCRIPTURE READING

Exodus 2:

“Now a man of the tribe of Levi married a Levite woman, 2 and she became pregnant and gave birth to a son. When she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him for three months. 3 But when she could hide him no longer, she got a papyrus basket for him and coated it with tar and pitch. Then she placed the child in it and put it among the reeds along the bank of the Nile. 4 His sister stood at a distance to see what would happen to him.

5 Then Pharaoh’s daughter went down to the Nile to bathe, and her attendants were walking along the riverbank. She saw the basket among the reeds and sent her female slave to get it. 6 She opened it and saw the baby. He was crying, and she felt sorry for him. “This is one of the Hebrew babies,” she said.

7 Then his sister asked Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

8 “Yes, go,” she answered. So the girl went and got the baby’s mother. 9 Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.” So the woman took the baby and nursed him. 10 When the child grew older, she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter and he became her son. She named him Moses, saying, “I drew him out of the water.”

TODAY’S MESSAGE

I.                   MOSES, SON OF LEVITES

a.      Moses, a fine child

                                                             i.      From the priestly tribe of Levi

ii.      The priests of Levi are a type of Christ, and high priest

iii.      Miriam and Aaron, Moses’ sister and brother were already born at this time

iv.      Jochebed was his mother and Amram was his father

b.     The papyrus basket

                                                             i.      Jochebed hid Moses for three months, however, the Pharaoh gave the new order to throw all Hebrew baby boys into the Nile. She could hide him no longer.

ii.      Jochebed, more than likely led by God’s Holy Spirit, made what we would call a papyrus basket, placed Moses into it, and set it among the shoreline hidden in the reeds.

iii.      Interesting fact here, some of your bibles will say “ark” instead of papyrus basket, and that is because the same word in Hebrew means both.

iv.      This word is used in Genesis 6:14, “So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out.”

                                                           v.      Just as salvation from the flood was in Noah’s Ark, salvation from the Nile was found in Moses’ Ark.

c.      Moses and his sister Miriam

                                                             i.      After Jochebed placed Moses among the reeds and left, his sister Miriam stood at a distance watching to see what would happen to her little brother.

ii.      Again, I believe what we see here is God’s Holy Spirit at work.

ILLUSTRATION

Imagine, the government first instructs murdering all boys of your race at birth. Then, demands all boys of your decent are thrown into the river immediately to drown.

Now God does three things here.

First, God’s Holy Spirit leads Jochebed to build Moses an ark and place him in the reeds of the Nile.

Second, Jochebed leaves, morning the loss of her son, thinking she would ever again see him. But God led her to this, I believe, to help her understand something.

Thirdly, God leads Miriam to stay and watch, so she can be the instrument that Brings Miriam back to her son.

Why did God lead Jochebed to leave and be brought back by Miriam? I believe it was to help Jochebed. By leaving, believing she would never again see her son and he would probably be killed, then, being brought back by Miriam, Jochebed would rejoice that her son was returned to her alive and that she would be allowed to raise him for the Pharaoh’s daughter.  Not just raise him but be paid to do so.

I believe if Jochebed did not experience the complete loss of Moses it would have been impossible for her to submit to raising him for another woman to call son.

I believe this, because if there were nothing for Jochebed to learn or grow from, then God’s Holy Spirit would have just had her wait among the reeds at a distance to come and offer aid when the Pharaoh’s daughter found Moses.

In life, we must look at all that happens and takes place, and ask ourselves, what is it God wants me to learn from this?

2 Corinthians 13:5a “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves…”

James 1:2-4 “Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.”

II.               THE PHARAOH’S DAUGHTER

a.      Pharaoh’s daughter finds Moses

                                                             i.      Going to the Nile to bathe, she sees the basket among the reeds and sends a servant to fetch it.

ii.      She opened it and saw the baby crying

b.     Pharaoh’s daughter has compassion for the baby

                                                             i.      Again, I feel God’s Holy Spirit at work here

ii.      Leading the Pharaoh’s daughter to disobey her father

iii.      Instead of throwing the boy who has been identified as a Hebrew child, into the Nile, she felt compassion for him.

c.      Moses’ sister addresses the situation

                                                             i.      This is when Miriam, Moses’ sister, steps in offering assistance

III.            A HEBREW WOMAN FOR A HEBREW CHILD

a.      Shall I get a Hebrew woman to nurse the Hebrew baby

                                                             i.      “Shall I go and get one of the Hebrew women to nurse the baby for you?”

ii.      To which the Pharaoh’s daughter says yes.

b.     Moses’ mother arrives

                                                             i.      Imagine the wonder and relief of Jochebed when her son is returned to her unharmed

ii.      VS 9 “Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Take this baby and nurse him for me, and I will pay you.”

c.      Moses grew and became Pharaoh’s Daughters son

                                                             i.      So Jochebed took her son Moses back and nursed him.

ii.      VS 10 tells us that when Moses “grew older” she took him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son.

iii.      Some think this was because the Pharaoh’s daughter could not have children, so Moses was being raised in the palace to become the Pharaoh of Egypt.

iv.      Verse 10, the only verse about Moses’ life in the palace, shows us what little importance that time of his life was. God’s Holy Word does not make a record of anything that took place from the time He was named Moses, until the time he was an adult, except for Exodus 2:10.

CONCLUSION

NEXT WEEK

We will look at Moses as an adult.
