God’s Covenant with Noah
After creation week, the
covenant God made with Adam was broken (do not eat of the tree), and the result
was eviction from paradise. Before the eviction, we see evidence in scripture
that God explained to Adam and Eve sacrifice, the how-to as well as the
what-for. I believe during this time some things were commanded to them as
well, such as you shall not murder.
We then read about the
children of Adam and Eve, and we see Cain breaking God’s covenant (established
sacrifice) by giving what he thought to give as opposed to what God instructed
them to give. His offering rejected; jealousy of his brother brewed inside him.
The Lord God spoke to Cain and tried to correct his path; however, Cain chose
to sin and break another of God’s commands, do not murder.
The result, eviction from
the land. He was also marked, I believe with the command of God, you shall not
murder, as part of his punishment.
1,600 years pass, and
slowly more and more break covenant with God, to the point where there was only
Noah who found favor with God for his obedience. The result, they would be
removed from the earth.
God instructs Noah to
build the Ark, save his family, and God would wipe the slate clean, limit the
length man could live, and rebuild society.
Last week we read of the
flood taking place.
So, Genesis 1-8 has shown us the following.
God created during the 7
days
Made a covenant with Adam
(do not eat of the tree)
The covenant was broke
and they were expelled from Paradise
God made a new covenant
(sacrifice and commands like do not murder)
Cain broke the covenants
and was expelled from the land
After 1,600 years, more
and more broke covenant until Noah was the only one left
They would all be
expelled from the land now (earth)
What we can see from this is;
1.
God makes a covenant with
us so we can have the benefits of Him
2.
If we stray, He reaches
out to us (like He did with Cain before Cain sinned)
3.
If we continue straying
there will come a point where we sin and break covenant
4.
Once broken, we expel
ourselves from the Kingdom of God and its benefits
5.
If we do not confess, and
repent, we will be excluded from Paradise
SCRIPTURE READING
Genesis 9
“Then God blessed Noah and his sons, saying to them, “Be
fruitful and increase in number and fill the earth. 2 The fear and dread of you
will fall on all the beasts of the earth, and on all the birds in the sky, on
every creature that moves along the ground, and on all the fish in the sea;
they are given into your hands. 3 Everything that lives and moves about will be
food for you. Just as I gave you the green plants, I now give you everything.
4 “But you must not eat meat that has its lifeblood still in
it. 5 And for your lifeblood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand
an accounting from every animal. And from each human being, too, I will demand
an accounting for the life of another human being.
6 “Whoever sheds human blood,
by humans shall
their blood be shed;
for in the image of God
has God made
mankind.
7 As for you, be fruitful and increase in number; multiply
on the earth and increase upon it.”
8 Then God said to Noah and to his sons with him: 9 “I now
establish my covenant with you and with your descendants after you 10 and with
every living creature that was with you—the birds, the livestock and all the
wild animals, all those that came out of the ark with you—every living creature
on earth. 11 I establish my covenant with you: Never again will all life be
destroyed by the waters of a flood; never again will there be a flood to
destroy the earth.”
12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am
making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for
all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be
the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds
over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my
covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again
will the waters become a flood to destroy all life. 16 Whenever the rainbow
appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant
between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”
17 So God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant I
have established between me and all life on the earth.””
I.
GOD’S
COVENANT WITH NOAH
a. God blessed Noah and his sons
i.
The verses here all
have to do with the covenant God makes with Noah, therefore it is safe to
assume “the blessing” is a covenant with God!
ii.
All blessings,
benefits and good comes from the hand of God, by our being in right standing
with God through obedience to His commands of covenant.
1. When Adam was obedient and didn’t eat of the tree,
he had Eden
2. When Cain offered first born sacrifices, he had
favor
3.
When mankind is
obedient to covenant commands, we are blessed
4.
When we disobey, or
break covenant, we are ejected from paradise, do not have favor with God and
lost the blessings, benefits and promises of the covenant
iii.
A covenant from God is
a legal spoken document with benefits and penalties
b. Living creatures now have the dread of man
i.
Before the flood,
creatures did not fear man
ii.
Now, the power of life
and death is handed to mankind, and we are to use it according to the covenant,
“they are given into your hands”
1.
This responsibility
covers caring for, protecting, using appropriately, fostering, and for
sustaining the life of humans
iii.
God’s covenant says we
can now eat animals for food
c. We are now permitted to eat meat
i.
“just as I gave you green
plants, I now give you everything”
II.
CREATE
LIFE, DO NOT TAKE IT
a. Do not eat the ‘lifeblood’
i.
At this point, God
puts the responsibility of animal conservation into the hands of man so that
the animals can repopulate the earth.
ii.
And though we are
permitted to eat meat, we are not permitted to drink the blood of animals.
iii.
This restriction was
for many reasons, now that the earth is in a fallen state, there are pathogens,
infections, diseases, many bad things about raw uncooked blood.
iv.
But the number one
reason was, because one day, the Lord would sacrifice Himself, and the blood of
sacrificed animals at this point in time represent that.
v.
Even though most of us
love a good, scary vampire tale, vampirism is mocking Christ, His sacrifice and
Christians who take communion.
1.
If you want to live
forever you drink blood
2.
The “master” vampire
makes other vampires by letting people drink their blood
vi.
Although many don’t
actually know this, and are not purposely enjoying books and movies mocking our
faith, it is still a mockery
vii.
In the first century
when pagans found out Christian took communion, they started rumors about
Christians being “cannibals” eating flesh and drinking blood.
b. Animals and Humans must give an account
i.
An account of what?
1. Sport killing of animals
2.
Murdering of humans
ii.
God is saying that He
is holding all living things accountable because the earth is starting over,
and there must be an increase in the number of humans and animals to fill the
earth.
iii.
Therefore, no “sport”
killing is permitted, only killing animals for food needs
iv.
Also, no murdering of
humans, even by animals
1.
I believe this is one
of the reasons God put fear of humans into animals
2.
The last thing you
need when trying to repopulate the earth is a bear eating a couple of the 8
people left on earth
c. Do not murder
i.
God establishes once
more the instruction I believe He already gave to Adam and Eve
ii.
Evidence of this is
the fact God punished Cain by expelling him from the land for murdering his
brother.
iii.
God, being righteous,
would not punish Cain if it were not known and stated, do not murder. I also
believe this is why God used Cain for a walking billboard with the command
written on him for all to see and learn that God meant business!
iv.
God now adds to the command,
do not murder.
1.
Stating how serious He
is in verse 6, “do not shed human blood, or by humans your
blood will be shed.”
2.
If someone is a
murderer, God wants them removed permanently from society and the earth,
because there are so few people you cannot risk more deaths by a murderer’s
hands.
3.
This is the same
attitude we should have when it comes to unrepentant murderer’s, serial
killers, child molesters, etc.
4.
Jeffery Dahmer as well
as Son of Sam (Sam Berkowitz) both confessed Christ in prison, and said they
became born again Christians.
a.
Only God knows the
heart of man, not I
b.
However, neither of
them wanted to be released, saying they were where they belonged for the crimes
they committed.
c.
They appear to confess
their sin, repent and are willing to pay the price, therefore, in this state
they are no longer a threat to other people.
5.
Not all who have
committed crimes are like this though. Some repeat their offense and murder
again as soon as they are released.
6.
When you have so few
people on earth, trying to repopulate the world, you cannot have a killer
running around killing.
7.
Satan would try and
use one man to destroy God’s plan of salvation for mankind.
a.
Why? So, Satan can
remain in rule over the fallen world, and escape final judgment, which can only
happen once the prophecies have been fulfilled.
b.
If Satan can stop
redemption, Judgment Day can never happen!
III.
ESTABLISHING
THE NEW COVENANT
a. Established with the Spiritual Heads
i.
The Spiritual Heads
who are given the Word of God held to a higher accountability
ii.
They would be
responsible for ensuring everyone knew and understood what God’s covenant was
iii.
Adam failed, Cain
failed, all of mankind with the exception of Noah failed
iv.
But this was a new
start, with the blessings of God on a clean slate
b. The Promise of God and sign of the covenant
i.
A non-believing friend
of mine once said to me when discussing the flood, “this is stupid. The reason
there is a rainbow is because of the light enters a water droplet, slowing down
and bending as it goes from air to denser water. The light reflects off the
inside of the droplet, separating into its wavelengths--or colors. When light
exits the droplet, it makes a rainbow.”
1.
To which I replied,
“Yes. However, it does this because God commanded the “scientific” law for it
to do so.”
ii.
He did not become a
Christian because of this conversation; however, he did rethink the “how” of
things and what I believe.
iii.
God says this would be
a sign to the covenant
1.
Remember, the covenant
is MORE than just, “I won’t destroy the earth with a flood again.”
2.
This is a sign for the
COMPLETE covenant, with all the commands and blessings, and benefits and
penalties!
3.
God said, “I will
remember my covenant between you and me and all living creatures.”
4.
Using the rainbow for
anything other than what God meant it for would be a mockery and perversion (like
vampirism is to Christianity) as well. It was meant for a symbol to MAN so he
remembers what happens when you sin and break covenant with God.
5.
In some cultures that
“promise” of God has forgotten the commands of the covenant reminder, and only
remembers the promise not to destroy again.
6.
So, rainbows represent
peace, love, harmony, which is a disregard for truth
7.
Rainbows are a symbol
of breaking covenant (sin) leads to death, as well as a seal for the covenant
made with Noah, and lastly, a promise not to destroy the earth in flood
again.
c. God remembers for our sake, not His
i.
Remember, not as in God forgot, but as in to keep in mind,
bear on, think about, take into consideration.
ii.
God wanted us to know
that with His new covenant established with Noah, they would remember what
happened because of sin.
1.
He wouldn’t do it ever
again, a promise so they could “choose” to be obedient to His covenant, rather
than a threat.
2.
God wants us to
understand that disobedience to His covenant leads to sin, and sin leads to death,
and He does not want that for us, but LIFE, and a relationship within His
covenant so that He can righteously judge us and bless us with all of the
benefits and blessings and fulfillment of promises that come to those in the
kingdom!
CONCLUSION –
Matthew 24:37-39
“37 But as the days of
Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. (There is a second Coming-and
Judgment Day)
38 For as in the days
that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving
in marriage, until the day that Noe entered into the ark, (they did not recall that
disobedience leads to sin and breaking covenant with God, then death)
39 And knew not until the
flood came (because THEY forgot, not God), and took them all away; so shall also the coming of the Son of man be.”
There will be a day when
disobedience and sin have finally taken over the world, just as it did in the
days of Noah!
Genesis 6:5
“The Lord saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the
earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only
evil all the time.”
They will all be living
their lives as they choose, apart from God’s Covenant. The Lord Jesus will
come, and just as the Lord God tried to correct Cain’s path, Tribulation will
commence, and those who do not confess and repent will be exiled from the New
Earth. Judgment Day will separate the sheep from the goats.
Next week we will read about the sons of Noah and the beginning of nations (Genesis
9b-10)
