ANNOUNCEMENT
Terri and I founded The House of Faith Ministries over 20 years ago. At the time I was serving as the interim pastor of the Baptist church, after serving for a few years as an Elder there. All together, over 25 years of ministry sharing the gospel and word of God.
I am now nearing my 1,000th sermon. Over 1,000 if you count all of the weddings, funerals, speaking engagements and all of the Iosco Ministers Association events, where I served as vice-president, then president for four years.
Using services like Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/HouseofFaithChurch | https://www.facebook.com/TheTruthDigest) our websites (https://truthdigest.org/ | https://www.ps127.org/) and Sermon Central (https://sermoncentral.com/), the premium pastor resource for ministers around the world to download sermons to preach to their congregations,
The House of Faith Church has;
· Reached over +250 countries with the gospel
· Have over 2 million sermon downloads worldwide
· Average over +8,000 sermon downloads per month
o Or nearly 275 sermon downloads per day! What we do here is making a difference!
This equals thousands and thousands of ministers globally preaching to millions of listeners who lives are changed by the gospel. Our global outreach is our crown jewel for Christ.
We are here to share the truth of the gospel of Jesus Christ, and give people the tools to properly seek Him, study His word, and be changed by the Holy Spirit.
I encourage you to continue sharing the gospel with friends and family, inviting them to Sunday Service, sharing the sermon posts from our Facebook page, and to never grow tired of doing good, no matter what happens in the world around us.
One thing I am confident of is, this church is making a difference around the world for Christ Jesus and the Kingdom!
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Mark 4:35-41 Jesus Calms the Storm
“And on that day, when evening came, He *said to them, “Let us go over to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd, they *took Him along with them in the boat, just as He was; and other boats were with Him.
37 And a great windstorm *arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat so that the boat was already filling up.
38 And Jesus Himself was in the stern, sleeping on the cushion; and they *got Him up and *said to Him, “Teacher, do You not care that we are perishing?”
39 And He woke up and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, “Silence! Be still.” And the wind died down and it became perfectly calm.
40 And He said to them, “Why are you so cowardly? Do you still have no faith?” 41 And they became very afraid and were saying to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
INTRODUCTION
Following a full day of teaching, Jesus told his disciples to take Him to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. On the way, a terrible wind storm arose, and water was washing over the side of the boat and the disciples thought they were all going to drown.
They woke Jesus up, who had been sleeping in the stern of the boat on a cushion, fearing for their lives, and seeing Him sleeping, they woke Him and frantically asked Jesus, “don’t you care that we’re all going to die?”
Jesus rebuked the winds, calming the sea.
Jesus then reprimanded the disciples, saying to them, “why are you so cowardly? Do you still have no faith?”
And the disciples filled with fear and awe, wondering who Jesus was to even command the wind and sea.
There are lessons here for us today. Lessons that will grow us in faith. Lessons that will wipe away our fears. Lessons that glorify the power and authority of Jesus Christ and His word!
I. WE ARE NOT EXEMPT FROM STORMS
a. All will face storms in life
i. Just because we are a Christian does not mean we will not have storms in our lives
1. Matthew 7:24-27 – Build your house on the Rock
ii. We live in a fallen world filled with storms, literal and figurative
iii. As Christians, we may face tornado, hurricanes, just like everyone else
iv. We can also face storms such as sickness, accidents, disappointments, and even death
v. Paul experienced many perils in life, including storms and shipwrecks
1. 2 Corinthians 11:25-26
The word of God does not exempt the believers from the storms of life.
b. Some storms are because we are Christians
i. Jesus warned us that we WILL experience tribulation as His disciples
John 16:33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
ii. For those who believe life as a follower of Christ is without tribulation, trials, and troubles, Jesus teaches otherwise.
iii. We see in scripture Paul faced many! And even warned his fellow disciples about them!
2 Corinthians 11:23b-30 “I speak as if insane—I more so; in far more labors, in far more imprisonments, in beatings without number, in frequent danger of death. 24 Five times I received from the Jews forty lashes less one. 25 Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked—a night and a day I have spent in the deep. 26 I have been on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my countrymen, dangers from the Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the desolate places, dangers on the sea, dangers among false brothers. 27 I have been in labor and hardship, in many sleepless nights, in starvation and thirst, often hungry, in cold and without enough clothing. 28 Apart from such external things, there is the daily pressure on me of concern for all the churches. 29 Who is weak without my being weak? Who is made to stumble without my burning concern?
30 if I have to boast, I will boast of what pertains to my weakness.”
Acts 14:22 “strengthening the souls of the disciples, encouraging them to continue in the faith, and saying, “Through many afflictions we must enter the kingdom of God.”
2 Timothy 3:12 “Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus will be persecuted.”
iv. Peter wrote that we should not be surprised when we are hit with tribulations and troubles!
1 Peter 4:12 “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial among you, which comes upon you for your testing, as though some strange thing were happening to you.”
Jesus does not promise exemption from the storm of religious persecution
If we find ourselves in the midst of a storm, whether literal or figurative, whether because we are human, or because we are Christian, do not be surprised or think its strange. It should be expected by us.
Instead we take heart knowing…
II. JESUS HELPS US DURING THE STORMS IN OUR LIVES
a. Through faith
i. Like the disciples, we may think we are dying during the storm
ii. Jesus states in our scripture verse today, that fear is indicative of a lack of faith (Mark 4:40)
iii. It becomes evident a few verses later that the disciples feared because they lacked faith, and they lacked faith because they did not understand “who” Jesus was.
Mark 4:41 “they became very afraid and were saying to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
1. Fearing something is saying the thing you fear is greater than Jesus. You remove your faith from Jesus, and give power to the thing you fear.
Jesus reveals to us the role of faith in the midst of the storm
b. Through His word
i. Do you know “who” Jesus is?
ii. Jesus is Lord, and the Word
iii. The scripture is given to us to prepare us to withstand the storms in life and put our faith and trust in our Lord, Jesus
1. Matthew 7:24-27
iv. We can pray and be heard by God (Matthew 6:5-8)
Our greatest weapon against the storms is seeking and placing the Kingdom of God and His righteousness FIRST in our lives!
Do you know what the disciples should have thought on the day Jesus said, “Take me to the other side of the Sea.”
Jesus said it. So it would be. No matter what tries to rise up against it. What the circumstances or storms look like. No matter the odds.
Jesus said it. It WILL be!
CONCLUSION
The greatest storm we will ever face is coming. The Day of Judgment (2 Peter 3:7; 2 Peter 3:10-12).
The day we will stand before the Judgment Seat of Christ (2 Corinthians 5:10)
Christ shed His blood to spare us on that day (Romans 5:6-10)
By obeying the gospel (as Jesus said, repent and trust in the gospel), we can have our names in the Lamb’s Book of Life and escape eternal condemnation for our sins.
Mark 16:15-16
Acts 2:38
Revelation 20:11-15
“Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey Him?”
It is Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, whom all authority in heaven and on earth has been given! (Matthew 28:18-20)
