INTRODUCTION
Today is Sunday. May 11th, 2025
Today, we gather to reflect on the immeasurable value of our mothers—not only in the lives of their children but also as spouses, companions, and pillars within their families.
Scripture gives us a vivid and beautiful portrait of a godly woman—a wife and a mother whose life is rooted in Faith, strength, and grace. This image isn’t about flawlessness or never making mistakes. As humans, we all fall short. Instead, the perfection the Bible speaks of is found in a woman’s devotion to the Lord, her Faith in His Word, and her willingness to be led by the Holy Spirit.
Far too often, the church has been misrepresented, portrayed as oppressive or dismissive toward women. Some even claim that God devalues women. These views are not only false, but they directly oppose the truth of scripture.
The so-called “god” of misogyny—the authoritarian figure used to justify control, dominance, and abuse—is not the God of the Bible. He is a creation of ignorance, fear, and manipulation, not Faith.
The truth is, God’s Word elevates women. Over and over, the Bible affirms their dignity, their calling, and their vital role in the Kingdom of God.
Look at the evidence:
Anna, a prophetess, praised God and proclaimed Christ at the temple (Luke 2:36).
Philip’s four daughters prophesied boldly (Acts 21).
Phoebe was a deacon and servant leader (Romans 16:1).
Junia was called “outstanding among the apostles” by Paul himself (Romans 16:7).
Priscilla was a co-laborer in Christ who taught Apollos, an educated man, about the way of God (Acts 18).
Deborah was a prophet and a judge who led Israel to victory (Judges 4–5).
And perhaps most profoundly, women were the first to proclaim the resurrection of Jesus Christ—a truth honored in all four gospels.
In God’s Kingdom, women are not sidelined. They are entrusted, empowered, and honored.
Peter writes in 1 Peter 3:7:
“Husbands, in the same way, be considerate as you live with your wives, and treat them with respect as the weaker vessel and as heirs with you of the gracious gift of life, so that nothing will hinder your prayers.”
This doesn’t imply women are inferior. “Weaker vessel” refers to emotional sensitivity—qualities of empathy, compassion, and deep feeling. In essence, Peter is saying:
“Husbands, handle your wives with care and honor. They are not to be dominated or dismissed, but cherished and respected. Mistreat them, and God will not hear your prayers.”
Notice: These verses speak volumes about how seriously God takes the well-being of women in a godly household.
So then, what does God consider a godly woman?
Proverbs 31 gives us the clearest picture—a woman who is strong, wise, industrious, generous, and deeply devoted to the Lord. Her children rise and call her blessed. Her husband praises her. She is clothed with strength and dignity, and she laughs without fear of the future.
A godly woman is not defined by societal roles or expectations, but by her relationship with the Lord.
Her strength comes from surrender, her beauty from grace, and her power from walking daily in the Spirit.
So today, let us honor our mothers. Let us bless our wives. And let us thank God for the incredible women who shape our families, our churches, and our world.
SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Proverbs 31:10-31
An excellent wife, who can find? For her worth is far above pearls.
11 The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain.
12 She deals bountifully with him for good and not evil All the days of her life.
13 She searches for wool and flax And works with her hands in willingly.
14 She is like merchant ships; She brings her food from afar.
15 And she rises while it is still night, And gives food to her household And a portion to her young women.
16 She makes plans for a field and buys it; From the fruit of her hands she plants a vineyard.
17 She girds herself with strength And makes her arms strong.
18 She senses that her gain is good; Her lamp does not go out at night.
19 She stretches out her hands to the distaff, And her hands hold fast the spindle.
20 She extends her hand to the poor, And she stretches out her hands to the needy.
21 She is not afraid of the snow for her household, For all her household are clothed with scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for herself; Her clothing is fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is known in the gates, When he sits with the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them, And gives belts to the tradesmen.
25 Strength and majesty are her clothing, And she smiles at the future.
26 She opens her mouth in wisdom, And the law of lovingkindness is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the ways of her household, And does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children rise up and bless her; As for her husband, he also praises her, saying:
29 “Many daughters have done excellently, But you have gone above them all.”
30 Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who worships Yahweh, she shall be praised.
31 Give to her from the fruit of her hands, And let her works praise her in the gates.
I. WHAT SCRIPTURE CALLS A GODLY WOMAN
a. Charm is deceptive
i. Proverbs 31:30 “Charm is deceitful and beauty is vain, But a woman who worships Yahweh, she shall be praised.”
ii. Many in this world put much effort into their looks and how they dress; in fact, the world has become filled with self-absorbed people, and all of their efforts are vain.
iii. A woman who worships God shall be praised, and her charm and beauty will never fade.
b. Modesty a must
i. 1 Timothy 2:9-10 “I want women to adorn themselves with proper clothing, with modesty and self-restraint, not with braided hair and gold or pearls or costly clothing, 10 but rather by means of good works, as is proper for women professing godliness.”
ii. Is Paul saying a woman cannot braid her hair?
iii. No. Paul is warning the women of his day not to dress immodestly, showing no self—restraint, looking like the prostitutes of his time.
iv. A godly woman is not concerned with dressing to attract by means likened to a prostitute drawing men in with lust.
v. Instead, a godly woman dresses modestly, showing restraint, and lets her good works profess her godliness.
c. Reverence a requirement
i. Titus 2:3-5 “Older women likewise are to be reverent in their behavior, not malicious gossips nor enslaved to much wine, teaching what is good, 4 so that they may instruct the young women in sensibility: to love their husbands, to love their children, 5 to be sensible, pure, workers at home, kind, being subject to their own husbands, so that the word of God will not be slandered.”
ii. A godly older woman instructs the younger to be sensible, love their husbands, love their children, be pure, and work hard to make their dwelling a home, kind and subject to their own husbands, SO that the word of God will not be slandered.
iii. We see this more than once in scripture. A reminder to women about going to their own husbands.
iv. Paul said in I Corinthians 14:35, “If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church.”
1. This verse is taken out of context far too often.
2. Is Paul saying women can’t talk at church because it’s shameful?
3. NO. Look at the context.
4. If a woman has a question about something they hear in a service, they need to “ask their own husband at home”
5. This instruction was for women not to go to other men for instruction, because THAT is what is shameful!
v. Paul gave this instruction to help prevent fights among men and women in the church and avoid the foundations of adultery.
Sisters in Christ, pursue worshiping the Lord, grow in godly wisdom, and become examples of holiness in word, deed, and attitude.
A godly wife is a helper, encouraging, and partner, supporting her husband in love, respect, and spiritual unity.
II. WHAT SCRIPTURE CALLS A GODLY WIFE
a. Submit to your own husbands
i. Ephesians 5:22-24
ii. Again, instructions are given to prevent fights between men and women in the church and prevent the foundation of adultery.
iii. Keep to your own husbands.
iv. And it goes without saying, men, don’t be instructing other men’s wives. You will get yourselves in trouble with the Lord.
b. Husbands have complete confidence in her and lack nothing
i. Proverbs 31:11-12 “The heart of her husband trusts in her, And he will have no lack of gain. 12 She deals bountifully with him for good and not evil All the days of her life.”
ii. I never have to worry about whether or not Terri has my best interests in mind.
iii. I fully trust her in every way.
iv. I lack nothing. Terri deals bountifully with me for good, and not evil.
Wives, walk alongside your husbands as a reflection of Christ’s love, offering respect, strength, and faithful partnership in all things.
A godly mother nurtures, teaches, and shapes the spiritual legacy of her children—her influence echoing for generations.
III. WHAT SCRIPTURE CALLS A GODLY MOTHER
a. The mother’s teaching adorns the children
i. Proverbs 1:8-9 “Hear, my son, your father’s discipline And do not abandon your mother’s instruction; 9 For they are a garland of grace for your head And ornaments about your neck.”
1. The father’s discipline and the mother’s instruction
2. Mothers teach your children
3. Fathers, ensure they listen
b. Timothy’s Faith came from his mother and grandmother
i. 2 Timothy 1:5 “being reminded of the unhypocritical faith within you, which first dwelt in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am convinced that it is in you as well.”
ii. Paul speaks of the Faith of Timothy, first in his grandmother Lois, then in his mother Eunice, and now in him.
iii. It is no coincidence
c. The words the Lord has given mothers are to be taught
i. Deuteronomy 6:6-7 “These words, which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. 7 You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall speak of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up.”
ii. In other words, a godly mother has the words of the Lord on her heart and diligently teaches them to her children.
iii. When they are relaxing at home, when they go out for walks, before bed, and in the morning when they get up.
iv. The godly mother has the word of the Lord always on her heart and mind, and how she can share it with her children, so like Timothy, one day their children and grandchildren will be blessed with their Faith.
Mothers, never underestimate your role—your love, wisdom, and Faith are the foundation upon which your children build their lives and their walk with God.
CONCLUSION – Do you see how important a mother’s foundation in God’s word is?
As we reflect on what it means to be a godly woman, wife, and mother, we are reminded that these roles are not burdens but sacred callings. The New Testament shows us that a godly woman walks with reverence before the Lord, pouring herself out in love, service, and spiritual maturity. She is a quiet force of strength in the church, a voice of wisdom in her community, and a beacon of grace in her home.
As a wife, she honors her husband not out of obligation but out of love for Christ, becoming a true partner, encouraging, and helper in their shared journey of Faith. And as a mother or grandmother, her role is generational. Like Lois and Eunice, she plants seeds of Faith that bloom in her children and grandchildren. Her prayers are whispered over cribs and on daily walks in the woods. Her hands may be worn from work, but her heart is rich with purpose.
A faithful woman transforms a house into a home—not just with meals on the table, folded laundry, or a clean house-but with warmth, prayer, discipline, laughter, and love rooted in Christ.
If you have been blessed with such a mother or grandmother, thank God for her today. Tell her how much she means to you. And if you are that woman, know this: your work is not unnoticed. Heaven sees it. Your family is shaped by it. And your legacy will outlive you.
May we honor the women who fear the Lord, cherish their wisdom, and give them the praise they so richly deserve—not just today, but every day.
Happy Mother’s Day!
