INTRODUCTION

Today is Sunday. April 2nd, 2023.

Today is Palm Sunday. One week before the day, we commemorate the resurrection of Jesus Christ. Today we celebrate Jesus’ triumphant return to Jerusalem before His death on the cross.

We call that day Good Friday. The Iosco Ministerial Association, where I serve as vice president, will have its annual Good Friday community service here at the House of Faith Church this Friday at 12:30 PM.

Palm Sunday is the day the Lord returned to Jerusalem, and the people spread their clothes and palm branches on the road to welcome Him as he entered the city on a donkey. In addition, some churches pass out palm fronds to their members to wave during service.

The oldest Holy Week observance is Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday; this commemorates the last supper Jesus had with the 12 disciples. It celebrates communion and the ceremonial washing of feet. This act symbolizes the mandate of Christ to the disciples to serve others with humility.

Whatever the traditions we have chosen to celebrate these days, washing feet, waving palms, or a Passover feast on Thursday, what this week is truly about is the week leading up to the crucifixion and resurrection of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

SCRIPTURE READING

(Legacy Standard Bible)

Matthew 21:1-11 “And when they had approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, at the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples, saying to them,

“Go into the village opposite you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied there and a colt with her; untie them and bring them to Me. “And if anyone says anything to you, you shall say, ‘The Lord has need of them,’ and immediately he will send them.”

And this took place in order that what was spoken through the prophet would be fulfilled, saying,

“SAY TO THE DAUGHTER OF ZION, ‘BEHOLD YOUR KING IS COMING TO YOU, LOWLY, AND MOUNTED ON A DONKEY, AND ON A COLT, THE FOAL OF A PACK ANIMAL.’”

And the disciples went and did just as Jesus had instructed them, and brought the donkey and the colt, and laid their garments on them; and He sat on the garments. And most of the crowd spread their garments in the road, and others were cutting branches from the trees and spreading them in the road.

And the crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were crying out, saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!”

And when He had entered Jerusalem, all the city was stirred, saying, “Who is this?” And the crowds were saying, “This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth in Galilee.”

Throwing the branches and clothes into the road before Jesus was to give Him a smooth and comfortable ride on the dirt and gravel path.

Reminiscent of rolling out the red carpet for a king.

TODAY'S MESSAGE

I.       Jesus knew the time had come and prepared

a.      (Vs1-3) Jesus sent the disciples

                                                 i.      As we read in Matthew 28 and the Great Commission, when Jesus commands His disciples to go, they obey.

b.     Prophecies were fulfilled in this command

                                                 i.      Isaiah 62:11-12 “Behold, Yahweh has announced to the end of the earth, Say to the daughter of Zion, “Behold, your salvation comes; Behold, His reward is with Him, and His recompense before Him.” And they will call them, “The holy people, The redeemed of Yahweh”; And you will be called, “Sought out, a city not forsaken.”

ii.      Zechariah 9:9 “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Make a loud shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your king is coming to you; He is righteous and endowed with Salvation, Lowly and mounted on a donkey, Even on a colt, the foal of a pack animal.”

c.      Jesus reveals Himself as King and Savior

                                                 i.      Jesus as King

1.      Zechariah 9:9 “Behold, your king is coming to you;”

2.      He was treated as a King coming to Jerusalem

                                              ii.      Jesus as Savior

1.      Zechariah 9:9 “He is righteous and endowed with salvation,”

2.      Matthew 21:9 “Hosanna” is a liturgical word used in Judaism and Christianity, meaning “save, we pray.”

3.      They were probably hoping for victory over the Roman government, not understanding this was for Salvation from their sin and reconciliation to God the Father through Christ Jesus.

II.   The people joyfully participated, not understanding the meaning

a.      Vs 8 tells us there was a great multitude

                                                 i.      Throwing clothes and branches into the path of Jesus for a smooth ride on a rough road

ii.      A path worthy of a King

b.     The people were leading Him and following around Him (Vs 9)

c.      Crying out the proclamation

                                                 i.      Matthew 21:9 “And the crowds going ahead of Him, and those who followed, were crying out, saying, “Hosanna to the Son of David; BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD; Hosanna in the highest!”

III.            Jesus officially made the Proclamation

a.      A proclamation that was also from the Old Testament

                                                 i.      Psalm 118:26-27 “Blessed is the one who comes in the name of Yahweh; We have blessed you from the house of Yahweh. Yahweh is God, and He has given us light; Bind the festival sacrifice with cords to the horns of the altar.”

1.      Who comes in the name of Yahweh? Jesus said He did. John 5:43

2.      What is the light Yahweh has given us? Psalm 27:1 “The Lord is my light and my salvation”

3.      What festival? Passover week.

4.      Who is the sacrifice to be tied to the horns of the altar? Jesus, with His arms outstretched, bound, and nailed to the cross

b.     The city and all around were “awakened” and shaken up

                                                 i.      They were “moved” by this event

ii.      Who is this? Some asked

iii.      They answered, “This is Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth.”

c.      But they did not truly see, nor did they understand

                                                 i.      The rejoicing people saw the actions of Jesus through their understanding.

1.      We are always so quick to tell the Lord what it is we “need.”

2.      We are like a spoiled child wanting more and more of what they desire rather than what is to their benefit.

ii.      They failed to understand that Jesus had not come to build an army as the Disciples imagined or a new earthly kingdom of David, as the people believed, tearing down the Roman government and replacing it with a new kingdom.

iii.      He came to bring Salvation from the bondage and forthcoming punishment of our sin. To establish a kingdom that will one day replace the entire earth and heaven. To save those who will submit to Him from the coming judgment.

  CONCLUSION

Today is a day we can celebrate the triumphal entry of our King as He willingly goes to the cross to pay our debt, spilling His precious blood for our transgressions and purchasing us at a great cost that no one else could afford to pay.

Many today see and hear about Jesus and do not truly understand who He is.

Revelation 19:11-16 “Then I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse, and He who sits on it is called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and wages war.

His eyes are a flame of fire, and on His head are many diadems; having a name written on Him which no one knows except Himself, and being clothed with a garment dipped in blood, His name is also called The Word of God.

And the armies which are in heaven, clothed in fine linen, white and clean, were following Him on white horses.

And from His mouth comes a sharp sword, so that with it He may STRIKE DOWN THE NATIONS, and He will RULE THEM WITH A ROD OF IRON; and HE TREADS THE WINE PRESS OF THE WRATH OF THE RAGE OF GOD, the Almighty.

And He has on His garment and on His thigh a name written, “KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.”

In only a few short days He would die for the sins of the world.

Be sure you recognize Him and know Him as the King and Savior as we celebrate His triumphal entry on this Palm Sunday.

Amen.

Jesus Deserves a Kings Welcome. He is the Savior.
