INTRODUCTION

This Wednesday, October 5th, 2022, is the Jewish Holiday Yom Kippur. We are taking a break from our Exodus series to look at Yom Kippur and what it represents, and why it is important to The House of Faith Church.

Yom Kippur translated into English, means “Day of Atonement.”

It was given to us in Leviticus 23.

So today, we will look at the Day of Atonement, what it meant for Moses and God’s people then, What it was a foreshadowing of, and what it means to The House of Faith Church.

Today we examine Yom Kippur and what it means to The House of Faith Church

 SCRIPTURE READING

Leviticus 23:26-28 “The Lord said to Moses, 27 “The tenth day of this seventh month is the Day of Atonement. Hold a sacred assembly and deny yourselves, [or, fast] and present a food offering to the Lord. 28 Do not do any work on that day, because it is the Day of Atonement, when atonement is made for you before the Lord your God.”

TODAY'S MESSAGE

 I.       YOM KIPPUR FOR MOSES AND GOD’S PEOPLE

a.      The Day of Atonement

                                                 i.      This is considered the holiest day of the Jewish year

ii.      It represents the Second Coming of the Messiah and the final judgment of the world.

iii.      It also reveals the High-Priestly work of Jesus as our High-Priest after the order of Melchizedek

1.      Hebrews 5:10

2.      Hebrews 6:20

iv.      Yom Kippur was the only time the High Priest could enter the Holy of Holies

                                               v.      He would offer a blood sacrifice for the people

vi.      This would conclude the ten Days of Awe

b.     Rosh HaShanah and the Days of Awe

                                                 i.      Rosh HaShanah was the beginning of the ten Days of Awe

ii.      Literally meaning “head of the year”

iii.      The Days of Awe were given in Leviticus 23:23-25

                                            iv.      The Days of Awe

1.      Ten days of penitence culminating in Yom Kippur

2.      Remorse, sorrow, repentance.

3.      How can one repent unless he knows what he needs repenting from

a.      Self-examination

b.     Confession

c.      Repentance

4.      This is the order of things before forgiveness (Atonement)

c.      Erev Yom Kippur (eve of the Day of Atonement)

                                                 i.      At the end of Rosh HaShanah, on the tenth Day of Awe, the night before Yom Kippur at sunset was Erev Yom Kippur.

ii.      On the eve of the culmination of self-examination, one must abstain from the five forms of pleasure

1.      This is a fast to starve the flesh so the Spirit may increase.

2.      From sunset on the tenth Day of Awe until the sunset on Yom Kippur

a.      No eating or drinking

b.     No washing or bathing

c.      No lotions or perfumes

d.     No wearing leather shoes

e.      No marital relations

iii.      For this time, they live as though they were dead to remind themselves of their mortality and the fact that they will one day face judgment.

iv.      There is much more to this oversimplification I have given

                                               v.      But it does bring light to our Church and why it is here today

II.   YOM KIPPUR FORESHADOWED CHRIST AND THE CROSS

a.      Blood in exchange for life makes atonement (Leviticus 17:11)

                                                 i.      This is Jesus and the cross

ii.      His blood shed for the remission of our sins

iii.      Matthew 26:27-28 “And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; 28 For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins.”

iv.      Leviticus 1:4 “And he shall put his hand upon the head of the burnt offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.”

1.      Remember, fire represents judgment

                                               v.      Leviticus 4:4 “And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tabernacle of the congregation before the Lord; and shall lay his hand upon the bullock's head, and kill the bullock before the Lord.”

b.     Confession

                                                 i.      However, we must confess our sins if they are to be forgiven.

1.      Not literally every sin, but self-examination is required

2.      2 Corinthians 13:5 “Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!”

3.      We examine ourselves to see if we are living in faith

4.      If not, if we fail the test, we must confess and repent

c.      Forgiveness

                                                 i.      The story begins with Rosh Hoshana

ii.      After ten days of self-examination, we reach Erev Yom Kippur, the eve of Yom Kippur

                                           iii.      Then Yom Kippur

III.            WHAT YOM KIPPUR MEANS FOR THE HOUSE OF FAITH CHURCH

a.      What happened at the previous church

                                                 i.      Self-examination…

1.      In the months leading up to Rosh HaShanah in 2006, the Elders (spiritual leaders) were faced with an issue of misappropriated funds in the church

2.      The treasurer took it upon himself to buy a computer because the church constitution stated he was allowed to decide how funds would be spent.

3.      Some congregation members were angry because there was no vote or meeting with the board of directors first and pointed out the constitution also stated the money would only be spent how the congregation voted to spend it.

a.      A contradiction.

4.      So, the Elders examined the Constitution and Bylaws of the church and found more contradictions, as well as statements that were contrary to the Truth of scripture.

5.      However, even the Elders of the church were bound by the rules of this broken constitution, we had to vote and see if the congregation (the church) wanted to get our constitution and bylaws in line with the Word of God.

6.      The vote would take place on the weekend of Rosh HaShanah, 2006, September 22nd-24th.

a.      The question to vote one was listed as follows: “Do you want the constitution and bylaws of the church to be in line with the Word of God? Yes or No?”

7.      Some of the congregation said we should wait another week to vote because some church members were missing.

a.      During that time, they called every person who attended to vote…people were still on the rolls, but some had not attended church in many years.

8.      The vote would now take place on October 1st, 2006. Yom Kippur

b.     What if the vote did not pass?

                                                 i.      I was stressed and worried all week; I had been an Elder in this church for years, as well as Interim Pastor  for two years.

                                              ii.      I prayed and prayed.

iii.      The night before the vote, I asked God to reveal the answer to me, what was I to do if the vote didn’t pass?

1.      I picked up a bible, and it fell open, and I began to read

2.      Matthew 10:14 “And whosoever shall not receive you, nor hear your words, when ye depart out of that house or city, shake off the dust of your feet.”

iv.      At that moment, I should have known the vote would not pass…or else God would not have told me what to do if it didn’t pass.

                                               v.      No, God told me the vote would not pass, and I was to move on.

c.      Yom Kippur

                                                 i.      October 1st, 2006. Yom Kippur and the Vote

1.      After examining ourselves (the church)

2.      We found we fell short of God’s Word

3.      The church, filled with the faces of unknown people who had not attended in years, so they could vote, voted that the church should not get right with the Word of God.

4.      Just as God had said.

ii.      I resigned right after the vote.

iii.      The following Sunday, we had our first church service as The House of Faith Church

1.      October 8th, 2006, my birthday.

CONCLUSION

So, why is Rosh HaShanah, the Ten Days of Awe, and Yom Kippur important to The House of Faith Church?

Self-examination – We must examine ourselves to ensure we are living God’s way

Confession – If we find fault, we must confess it

Repentance – We repent of that fault

Forgiveness – We receive forgiveness when we confess and repent

Atonement – Christ paid the price so we could belong to God through Him

Every year at this time, I am reminded of a church that died, one that was born, and the only difference was the desire to adhere to the Word of God.
