INTRODUCTION
The Book of Exodus is the second book of the bible. The Exodus, like Genesis, will teach us about bondage to sin, redemption through Christ, learning to teach all that He commands, Consecration and doing the Will of the Creator, and about worship.
It is easy to say, oh, the Exodus is about God’s people escaping the Pharaoh and Egypt, and Moses parts the sea for them.
However, like Genesis, there is far more in this book.
The overall message of Exodus is, “Redemption by blood.”
We will begin by reading the two key verses of Exodus, which will help us understand it as a whole.
SCRIPTURE READING
Exodus 3:8a; 12:23
“So I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up out of that land into a good and spacious land, a land flowing with milk and honey—"
“When the Lord goes through the land to strike down the Egyptians, he will see the blood on the top and sides of the door-frame and will pass over that doorway, and he will not permit the destroyer to enter your houses and strike you down.”
PROLOGUE
We read in Exodus 3:8 God explaining in His word what He did, and why, as well as what will take place because of what He did.
God came down to rescue.
Rescue His people from the hand of the Egyptians.
And bring them up out of that.
Into a good and spacious land flowing with milk and honey.
This remains true today.
God came down from His heavenly home to live as the man Jesus to rescue us. (John 3:13; John 6:33 & 38)
Egypt is symbolic of the land of sin.
And bring us UP out of this corrupt world.
Into a good and spacious land flowing with milk and honey, where there are many mansions awaiting us in The Father’s house.
The same can be said about Exodus 12:23
When the Lord goes through the land to strike down Egyptians, in other words, On Judgment Day when the Lord goes through all those in the land (remember what the Beast does in Revelation 13:16 “It also forced all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or their foreheads,”)
The Lord will know those who have His blood on the top and sides and will pass over them.
He will not allow them to be cast into Gehenna, where the Destroyer has been cast down.
TODAY’S MESSAGE
I. EXODUS IS IN TWO MAJOR DIVISIONS
a. The two major divisions of Exodus
i. The first part of Exodus, Chapters 1 to 19, deal with the narrative of the Exodus itself
1. This portion of Exodus is broken into three major sections: the narrative of the bondage, the narrative of redemption, and the narrative of education of the people.
ii. The second part of Exodus, Chapters 19 to 40, deal with the legislative portion.
1. This second part of Exodus deals with the lawmaking and consecration of God’s people and worship.
2. In other words, the law shows the dedication and sacred purpose, consecration, and law that shows how those who are consecrated must worship.
b. The Narrative
i. BONDAGE is first examined through the Literal Interpretation type of hermeneutics, also referred to as “historical-grammatical, normal reading,” or simply, it is what it says.
ii. Moses is recording what took place. The bondage of the Israelite's, the redemption and escape from Egypt, and how his people moved forward with the spiritual education of the people.
iii. We can then apply Allegorical Interpretation to the same chapters and see why scripture teaches God is unchanging.
iv. When we understand that Egypt is sin, the blood of the lambs is Christ, the painted doors represent us being covered in the blood of Christ. The Destroyer passing us by is avoiding the Lake of Fire on Judgment Day because we belong to the Lord; we see the importance of first reading literally, then examining allegorically.
c. The Legislative
i. THE LAW is given, and we are taught that the Redeemed must do the Will of the Redeemer, and we must consecrate ourselves to His service.
1. In Exodus 19-23, we see God give us the moral law, though we know now He writes His Law upon the hearts of men.
ii. Exodus 24-40 deals with the laws of worship.
1. Redeemed ones must be worshiping ones; and must worship in God’s way.
2. Here, we see the giving of the ceremonial law.
3. God designed everything about the Tabernacle. Therefore, we first see the Tabernacle in the Literal light of reading, then Allegorically discover that Christ Himself IS the Tabernacle.
II. EXODUS IS THE SEQUEL TO GENESIS
a. Exodus speaks of man’s failure under every test and in every condition.
i. However, Exodus shows us God’s hastening to man’s rescue, to man’s redemption, and God’s coming forth to emancipate and enrich.
b. Exodus key verses
i. Exodus 3:8 gives God’s declaration
ii. Exodus 12:23 shows how it was accomplished
c. Exodus is the book of redemption
i. Take note of how the book opens and closes
1. Like Genesis begins with a Living God and ends with a dead man
2. Exodus begins in darkness and gloom yet ends in glory
ii. It begins in telling how God came down in grace to deliver an enslaved people
iii. And ends by declaring how God came down in glory to dwell in the midst of a redeemed people
III. THE PATTERN OF OUR REDEMPTION IS SHOWN ONCE MORE
a. Every great work has a pattern of construction
i. Whether we speak of great ships, computers, cars, every great work has a pattern of construction.
ii. A design
iii. A pattern made.
iv. Our salvation was the design of God before the foundation of the world – the pattern we find in the Book of Exodus
b. The Book of Exodus
i. Is the historical picture of the outworking of Divine Grace
ii. The redemption and recovery of man by God to Himself by Jesus Christ
iii. Who is now our great Apostle (like Moses) and High Priest (Like Aaron)
c. The Story of Exodus has repeated in every soul
i. Every soul that seeks deliverance from the ensnaring and exhausting influence of this fallen world.
ii. From this view, the book is human, from the first verse to the last
iii. The things that happened are both literal, and allegory to us.
iv. They were written for our warning
v.
We
study Exodus to see God’s way of delivering sinful man
CONCLUSION
We examine Exodus to see God’s gracious and glorious purpose in our rescue
