SERMON INTRODUCTION

So far, we have read of the creation of everything that is, or would ever be created, all taking place during the first week.

Creation Week - Days 1-6 Have taken place

Last week we looked at a detailed breakdown of Day 6

It is STILL Day 6

SCRIPTURE READING

Genesis 2:18-25

“The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

19 Now the Lord God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. 20 So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib[h] he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

23 The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’

for she was taken out of man.”

24 That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.

25 Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame.”

                  I.            IT IS STILL DAY 6 OF CREATION WEEK

a.      What has happened up to this point

                                                                         i.      God made man on the 6th day (Genesis 1:26; 2:7)

ii.      God took THE man and placed him in the Garden of Eden (Genesis 2:8)

b.     The Garden of Eden

                                                                         i.      God made trees grow out of the ground in front of Adam (Genesis 2:9)

ii.      God made the Tree of Life & Knowledge of Good & Evil (Genesis 2:9)

iii.      God created animals and birds for Adam to name (Genesis 2:19-20)

iv.      God put Adam in the garden for a few reasons

1.      To witness God creating (this could not happen until earth was able to host human life, after Day 5)

2.      To witness God create the Tree of Life (which sustains human life everlasting)

3.      To witness God create the Tree of knowledge of good and evil (so there could be a command to obey, which in turn made Adam obedient, righteous and good)

4.      To name all the animals and birds as Adam witnessed God create them from the ground

5.      To work and care for the garden

c.      The Commandment

                                                                         i.      After creating the Tree of Life (which would keep humankind healthy and everlasting with no death) God created the Tree of knowledge of Good and Evil

ii.      God can now give Adam a command, and as long as Adam is “obedient” God’s law of Kingdom, protection, blessings is in effect for Adam because he is being righteous

1.      You cannot be obedient if there is no opportunity to be disobedient

2.      There HAD to be a tree so God’s law of His kingdom, protection and blessings can be active for the righteous

iii.      Genesis 2:16-17 “And the Lord God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree in the garden; 17 but you must not eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, for when you eat from it you will certainly die.”

iv.      Now the line is officially drawn by God which, for the rest of eternity, will divide the goats from the sheep.

1.      Obedience or disobedience

2.      Righteous or unrighteous

3.      Belong to God’s Kingdom or not

4.      Simplified, good or evil

My Thoughts on the Tree of Knowledge

I personally do not believe the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil “gave” us some ability we did not already possess.

I believe the “knowledge of good and evil” is a reference to the moment humankind understood we had the “choice” to obey, “be good”, or disobey, “be evil”.

However, that “ability” was already possessed by humankind, or they could not have made the “choice” to eat of the tree of knowledge. But the real knowledge came after actively disobeying, and it was at that moment they “realized” what good and evil truly were.

A choice to obey God and be good, or a choice to disobey God and be evil.

When training an animal, it is a long process of diligence and discipline. During the process you will see times where the animal is trying to decide whether it will obey your will or its own.

If the animal chooses its own will without consequences, a disciplinary action to correct, the animal will come to the “knowledge” that it can choose its own will rather than the trainers.

This choice was always within the animal, but not realized, until it made the choice to follow its own will.

This, I believe, is the case with Adam and Eve and the Tree of the Knowledge of Good and Evil.

               II.            THE FIRST OPERATION

a.      It is not good for the man to be alone

                                                                         i.      After the Command of God was given to Adam (Eve was not created yet) and God created all the animals and birds for Adam to name in the Garden, God restates verse 18

ii.      VS 18 “The Lord God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone. I will make a helper suitable for him.”

iii.      VS 19-20 Adam names the animals and birds

iv.      VS 20b “…But for Adam no suitable helper was found.”

b.     VS 21 So, the Lord caused the man to fall into a deep sleep

                                                                         i.      Something to note here, another notable truth by God

ii.      “if” Genesis is a creation of vain imagination rather than an actual account of creation, why are there so many scientific truths, which were not discovered by modern man, in some cases for thousands of years after its writing?

iii.      If I were making this up, I would have had God make a woman from dirt, just like Adam…so they would be “the same”, compatible, equal, as scripture truly teaches.

iv.      But it doesn’t…to me, there are a few notable facts here in this verse!

1.      The Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep

a.      A sleep deeper than regular sleep…needed for medical procedures on the human body!

b.     Anesthesia is needed for this!

c.      An early form of anesthesia was first used at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston by dentist William T.G. Morton and surgeon John Warren on October 16, 1846

d.     Nearly 6,000 years after Adam (5781 years by the Hebrew Calendar)

                                                                       v.      So, the woman is not made from dirt, or out of thin air

vi.      But from Adam, so God places him in a deep sleep for a procedure

c.      Parts is parts

                                                                         i.      Now most of us believe God took a rib from Adam, and that’s why men have one less ribs than women…but the Literal Hebrew does not say this.

1.      The fact is the Hebrew word used in Genesis 2:21 (H6763) literally means “of the body

2.      Figuratively this word is used as “the side” of a person

3.      But this does not mean “rib”

                                                                      ii.      Why is this important?

1.      Because scientifically speaking, MOST humans have 12 sets of ribs regardless of sex.

2.      Unless you have 1 of a handful of rib abnormalities such as Cervical Rib

a.      Which gives 1 or 2 extra ribs between the neck and collar bone and may also give or take an extra rib on either side or both of the chest in either sex.

3.      This makes a difference because someone who wants to argue genesis is not fact may bring up that most humans have 12 sets of ribs, therefore Genesis account of Eve’s creation is fiction.

4.      Fact, the bible doesn’t say rib, rather, God made Adam fall into a deep sleep for a medical procedure (working within the rules and limitations of Creation He set into place) and took, perhaps, figuratively from the side of Adam, literally a piece of Adams body.

iii.      I believe that it is at this point God separated the TWO on DAY 6, making them Male and Female! (Genesis 1:27)

1.      Men and women have practically the same set of about 20,000 genes. The only physical difference in their genetic make up is in the sex chromosomes.

2.      Only males have a Y chromosome. Although the X chromosome is present in both sexes, there are two copies in females and only one in males.

3.      Males have XY, Females have XX

4.      If the man’s sperm gives the female a Y, she has a boy, an X she has a girl

iv.      VS 21-22 “So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs A PART FROM the body (20,000+ genes (DNA) and the X Chromosome) and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the Lord God made a woman from the rib PART he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.”

                                                                       v.      It also states God “closed up” the place with flesh…if you are making a story up wouldn’t God just do some magic to make all this happen?  But instead, we see evidence from scripture of God working WITHIN the rules He created in His creation and the human body’s limitations He set in place!

            III.            THE MARRIAGE

a.      Adam responds to seeing Eve for the first time

                                                                         i.      VS 23 “The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man.”

ii.      So, we see Adam knows he was operated on, and that the woman was made from part of him.

iii.      I believe this was done by God for a few reasons

1.      We are whole, one flesh when with our spouse

2.      It is symbolic of the union of Christ and the Church

3.      Apart from our mate, we are not complete, just as apart from Christ Jesus, we are not complete.

b.     Marriage defined and explained

                                                                         i.      VS 24 “That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh.”

ii.      And in turn, together as one, create life to continue the process God has ordained.

c.      Man and his wife were both naked and felt no shame

CONCLUSION –

I believe that this description of the events is not just likely, but very believable because of the nuance of scientific fact that cannot be discredited.

From the descriptions of the first medical procedure and the steps taken to complete it, as well as the creation of woman and how modern man now understands the similarities as well as the differences of the sexes, makes the account that much more believable.

Seeing the first “marriage” and understanding the reasoning as described in Genesis and throughout scripture, brings us closer to understanding the why God created everything in the way He did, and how He provided provisions through His original creation that carry through to today.

God operating within these rules and limitations He created show that God has the full knowledge and understanding of all things and made a way, even when we cannot see a way, it has been provided from the foundations of creation.

Next week we will look at Adam and Eve’s new life together
