SERMON INTRODUCTION
Today we begin our walk through the
scriptures, God’s Timeline, looking at the major events of the Bible.
Obviously, we need to start at the beginning, Creation.
When thinking about everything that is, we
need to remember, before creation there was God. Everything else that is, is
created and outside of God.
So let’s begin looking at all that is.
SCRIPTURE READING
Genesis 1:1-5
“In the beginning God created the
heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was
over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the
waters. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was light. 4
God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness.
5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And there was
evening, and there was morning—the first day.”
I.
BEFORE
THE BEGINNING
a. Before creation, there was only GOD
i.
“In the beginning was
the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in
the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made
that has been made.” John
1:1-3
ii.
Here we see that in
the beginning was God the Father and the Word (later to be called Jesus Christ
when Word becomes Flesh, John 1:14)
iii.
We also see that
everything that is NOT God (everything created) is created by the Word.
iv.
We also see that there
is NOTHING that exists that the Word did not make.
b.
Why did
God create anything at all?
i.
The Bible tells us God
created us for His Glory
1.
Isaiah
43:7
2. He formed us so we might declare His praise – Isaiah 43:21
3. Revelation 4:11 “Worthy are you, our Lord and God, to receive glory
and honor and power, for you created all things, and by your will they existed
and were created.”
4. “…All things were created for Him.” Colossians 1:16
ii.
It wasn’t because He
was bored, or lonely, or sad. It was because He is God and WORTHY to receive
honor and glory and praise!
c.
So how
long did God exist before creation?
i.
First, time (4th
dimension) did NOT exist before it was “created” by God in Genesis 1:3
ii.
Secondly, God makes
clear to us in John, everything other than God is “created”, God ALWAYS WAS and
always will be, the ONLY eternal thing there is. Everything else (created) will
only ever be “everlasting”, not eternal, because everything other than God was
“created” and therefore has a beginning.
iii.
“And God said to
Moses, ‘I AM WHO I AM.’ And He said, ‘Thus you shall say to the children of
Israel, “I AM has sent me to you”’
Exodus 3:14.
1. God tells us in Revelation 1:8 He is the Alpha and
Omega, beginning and end, the one who is and was and who is to come, the
Almighty is the ONLY eternal being.
II.
THE
HEAVENS AND EARTH ARE CREATED
a. In the beginning God created the heavens
i.
This is the literal
beginning of a “pallet” or “space” for all of God’s creation
ii.
This is the “heavens”
iii.
A bubble filled with
all the matter needed for which everything that “is” is made from.
iv.
All the planets,
moons, asteroids, comets, etc., are placed in the bubble of creation, which we
call “universe”
v.
This may or may not
have happened with a “big bang”, considering none of us were there, we can only
theorize.
b. And the earth
i.
Within the created
bubble (universe) are billions and billions of planets, moons, etc., the earth
being one of them.
ii.
Within all of
creation, God chose this specific planet to be the beginning of something
wonderful.
iii.
At this point, (Genesis 1:1) there are no Sun’s (stars) or galaxies formed
(they need suns for gravitational orbits)
c. And the earth was formless and empty
i.
Genesis
1:2 “Now the earth was formless
and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was
hovering over the waters.”
1.
“Formless” as
in no land mass yet. We know this because the verse states “darkness was
over the surface of the deep.” Surface of what deep?
2.
The next verse says, “the
Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.”
ii.
Now we reach Genesis 1:3
1.
Somewhere between Genesis 1:2 & 3 God creates the Natural Universal Laws
III.
NOW TIME
(AND OTHER UNIVERSAL LAWS) IS CREATED
a. Natural Universal Laws (both discovered and yet
to be discovered)
i.
Laws that were created
by God to hold the universe in place and operate its functions.
1.
These laws exist
whether we have discovered them, understand them or have no clue about them at
all.
a.
Just because you don’t
know anything about the law of gravity, that does not change the fact that it
exists and affects you.
ii.
Scientific laws are
proven theories we discovered and understand, while scientific theories are
evidence of laws not fully understood
1.
Example… E=MC2
a.
Einstein’s theory of
relativity, Energy is equal to mass at the speed of light in a vacuum.
i.
i.e. this is the
formula that throws a monkey wrench into time travel because you would
literally be destroyed if you moved faster than the speed of light to travel
backward in time.
b.
This was once a
theory, then proven and became a fact.
c.
This scientific law
was created by God during the creation.
iii.
There are many
scientific laws (Hubble’s Law of Cosmic Expansion, Kepler’s Laws of Planetary
Motion, Gravity, Newton’s Law of motion, Laws of thermodynamics, Archimedes’
Buoyancy Principle, General Relativity, etc.)
1.
There are also many
theories, such as String Theory, Black Matter, Quantum theory, etc.
2.
These theories have
evidence, but not enough for us to conclude the true nature of their fact.
Which in no way means they do not exist.
b. Genesis 1:3 – God creates the laws of the universe
including TIME
i.
Some may ask why time?
1.
This 4th
dimension creates a “timeline” where there is an order to events, an
unchangeable reality to those within time that there IS a yesterday, today and
tomorrow.
2.
Without time, it is
always “now”
3.
God wanted to place
limits on creation, rules of operation, this is why there are universal
scientific laws such as gravity.
ii.
Time allows finite
minds to grasp the concepts of stories for understanding. A story needs a beginning,
a middle and an end. Without time, this cannot be achieved.
iii.
God shows us in His
Word, in the beginning was God, He created everything and it was perfect, sin
came and broke our relationship with Him. He paid the debt of our sin, and while
we are alive, we can partake of the New Covenant and in the end, judgment and
eternity once more in relationship with God.
1.
If there was no
“time”, judgment would be instant. You would break God’s Law and be punished
instantly.
2.
God knows we cannot
keep His perfect law because we are not perfect, therefore time is needed to
teach, for us to learn, confess, repent, serve, and then come to a covenantal
agreement with God through Jesus Christ and be forgiven.
c. Now, the FIRST DAY
i.
Now that the laws of
the universe are created other things can happen
1. And God said, “Let there be light,” and there was
light. 4 God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the
darkness. 5 God called the light “day,” and the darkness he called “night.” And
there was evening, and there was morning—the first day. – Genesis 1:3-5
ii.
Why didn’t God make
light first so He could see what He was doing? (Like He needs light)
iii.
Because, the Universal
Natural Laws had not been created yet, therefore, scientifically speaking,
light could not exist without;
1. Planck's Law
a.
This law is
generalized to mean that all objects have some internal temperature, and given
that temperature, they all glow.
2. Kirchoff's Law
a.
This radiative
transfer law states that at thermal equilibrium, the emissivity of a body or
surface equals its absorptivity.
3. Wien's Displacement Law
a.
The Wien's
displacement law provides us with expected values for the most probable
wavelengths in the Bose-Einstein distribution of blackbody radiation
4. Stefan-Boltzmann Law
a.
The Stefan-Boltzmann
Law states that the radiative energy emitted by a surface is proportional to
the fourth power of the surface's absolute temperature.
iv.
Remember, these laws
worked BEFORE they were discovered by scientists, named afterwards, but all
created during creation by the Word in Genesis 1!
CONCLUSION – Before Creation, Creation of the “heavens” and the first
day
So we see before creation
God is “I AM”, existing as God the Father, the Word (before He becomes flesh)
and the Holy Spirit.
God creates a workspace,
a pallet, a sphere in which everything He creates will exist.
In Genesis 1:1-5 (Around
4,000 B.C.) God creates within this snow globe, all of creation (all of matter
that will ever exist, first law of thermodynamics) including the planets,
moons, asteroids, comets, earth, as well as the Universal Scientific Laws, the
suns, galaxies set into motion, and the passage of Time.
The first day.
Next week we will begin our series with the Second Day
