SERMON
INTRODUCTION
The
Book of Revelation, or the Revelation of Christ, is the most challenging book
in the bible.
Because
of this fact, many avoid it or ignore it altogether. Some fear lack of
understanding; others afraid to misinterpret, which I guess it is better to
avoid than dive in and get it completely wrong.
Many
times, when a new believer comes to me for direction, they want to jump right
into Revelation and find out what’s to come.
This
is equivalent to deciding one day to learn Mandarin and sitting down to author
a novel in Chinese that very same day.
Or,
a kindergartener learning how to count, and then trying to calculate quantum
mechanics calculations.
The
words in Revelation have caused much debate on rapture, judgment, even some who
claim John was writing about the events in his day in code rather than Jesus
Christ revealing to him about the coming events and Judgment.
A
special blessing is promised to those who read Revelation.
Although
it may be a difficult book, we could all use a special blessing, reading this
is good for us all, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will take the
Revelation of Christ in small portions and gain understanding, little by
little.

THE THINGS WHICH SHALL BE – The Coming Judgment
SCRIPTURE READING
Revelation 14:6-13
6
Then I saw another angel flying in midair, and he had the eternal gospel to
proclaim to those who live on the earth—to every nation, tribe, language and
people. 7 He said in a loud voice, “Fear God and give him glory, because the
hour of his judgment has come. Worship him who made the heavens, the earth, the
sea and the springs of water.”
8
A second angel followed and said, “‘Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great,’ which
made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.”
9
A third angel followed them and said in a loud voice: “If anyone worships the
beast and its image and receives its mark on their forehead or on their hand,
10 they, too, will drink the wine of God’s fury, which has been poured full
strength into the cup of his wrath. They will be tormented with burning sulfur
in the presence of the holy angels and of the Lamb. 11 And the smoke of their
torment will rise for ever and ever. There will be no rest day or night for
those who worship the beast and its image, or for anyone who receives the mark
of its name.” 12 This calls for patient endurance on the part of the people of
God who keep his commands and remain faithful to Jesus.
13
Then I heard a voice from heaven say, “Write this: Blessed are the dead who die
in the Lord from now on.”
“Yes,”
says the Spirit, “they will rest from their labor, for their deeds will follow them.”
I.
THE FIRST ANGEL PROCLAIMS THE GOSPEL
a.
The angel (heavenly angel) proclaims the gospel to
those on earth
i. Every nation, tribe,
language & people
ii. This is the same Gospel
preached by Paul and the Apostles Hebrews 13:20
iii. People of earth will “see” and
“hear” this angel proclaim the Gospel
b.
Fear God
i. Fear God
1. Nearly 300 times in
scripture we are told to fear God
2. But the “fear” of God is a
positive thing
3. Genesis
42:18, Joseph wins his
brothers' trust when he declares he is a God-fearing man.
4. It was because the midwives
feared God that they obeyed him instead of the authorities by sparing the
Hebrew babies (Exodus 1:17)
5. Pharaoh brought disaster on
his nation because he did not fear God (Exodus 9:29-31)
6. Moses chose leaders to help
him on the basis that they feared God and wouldn't take bribes (Exodus
18:21) and told the Hebrews
that God met with them in a terrifying display of his power so that they
wouldn't sin (Exodus 20:20)
7. The Mosaic Law cites fear of
God as a reason to treat the disabled and elderly well (Leviticus
19:14, 32)
8. Jesus states this stronger
than anyone when he says, "Don't be afraid of those who want to kill
your body; they cannot touch your soul. Fear only God, who can destroy both
soul and body in hell" (Matthew 10:28).
9. Paul says to work toward
complete holiness because we fear God (2 Corinthians 7:1)
10. Fear means to have the
ultimate respect for something
a. i.e. Anyone who is not
afraid of disarming a bomb is a danger to himself and his teammates.
ii. Give Him glory
1. Psalm 50:23 “The one who offers
thanksgiving as his sacrifice glorifies me; to one who orders his way rightly I
will show the salvation of God!”
2. By this my Father is
glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. John 15:8
3. I
Corinthians 6:20 “For
you were bought with a price. So glorify God in your body.”
4. Romans
15:9
“And in order that the Gentiles might glorify God for his mercy. As it is
written, “Therefore I will praise you among the Gentiles, and sing to your
name.”
iii. Because the hour of His judgment
has come
1. Refers to the seven angels
with the seven vials of plagues about to be poured out upon the earth
c.
Worship Him
i. Him who made the heavens,
the earth, the sea, and the springs of water
ii. Why mention this verse?
iii. Apparently the antichrist is
claiming that he either created or has control over the heavens, earth, sea and
springs of water.
iv. So the angel proclaims
creations true creator
II.
THE SECOND ANGEL PROCLAIMS THE FALL OF BABYLON THE
GREAT
a.
Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great!
i. Genesis
11:1-9 we find Babylon was
the first organized rebellion against God, and in Revelation 13, the last.
ii. In Revelation
13 when the antichrist
appears, the beast from the sea with ten horns and seven heads we read in verse
3 “One of the heads of the beast seemed to have had a fatal wound, but the
fatal wound had been healed. The whole world was filled with wonder and
followed the beast.”
iii. I had mentioned that I
believed this was a reference to a kingdom that was brought back, not the
antichrist himself.
iv. Babylon
v. When the antichrist receives
“crowns” this is authority and reign over countries
vi. These countries will form
the “New Babylon” which the antichrist will preside over and rule from
vii. Revelation
13:4
“People worshiped the dragon because he had given authority to the beast, and
they also worshiped the beast and asked, “Who is like the beast? Who can wage
war against it?”
1. “it” not a person, rather Babylon
the Great
viii. Babylon the Great will fall,
at the end of the Great Tribulation and after God’s Wrath which is about to be
poured out upon the earth
b.
Babylon the Great, which made all nations “drink” the
maddening wine of her adulteries
i. Drink, another reference in
Revelation as before when the Dragon (Satan) spewed out a great deluge in hopes
of drowning the children of the woman
ii. This represents false
doctrine of Satan
iii. As opposed to the Truth of
God’s Word, the “Living Waters”
iv. This time referred to as
“wine”, a mockery of communion, a play on the blood of Christ represented by
the wine
v. Here, the 666 unholy
trinity, perverting all things of God once more, has their own form of
communion, wine, blood, false doctrines and teachings which are crazy, and
apparently make those who partake insane.
c.
Her adulteries
i. Another spiritual reference,
as most of Revelation
ii. This “adultery” is spiritual
adultery
iii. Spoken of many times in the
Bible, spiritual adultery is;
1. Unfaithfulness to God
2. Undue fondness for things of
the world
iv. “‘But like a woman faithless
to her lover, even so have you been faithless to me, O house of Israel,’ says
the LORD” Jeremiah
3:20
v. “How the faithful city has
become a whore, she who was full of justice! Righteousness lodged in her, but
now murderers.” Isaiah 1:21
vi. “How sick is your heart,7
declares the Lord God, because you did all these things, the deeds of a brazen
prostitute,” Ezekiel 16:30
vii. James
4:4-5
“The Bible tells us that people who choose to be friends with the world are an “adulterous
people” having “enmity against God”
III.
THE THIRD ANGEL PROCLAIMS GOD’S COMING WRATH
a.
Saying in a loud voice
i. If anyone worships the Beast
and its image and receives its mark
ii. They too (they will also)
drink the wine of God’s fury
iii. Which has been poured full
strength into His cup of wrath
1. There will be no mercy in
this judgment
iv. Poured into the cup of His
wrath
1. When this cup gets full, the
wrath of His judgment will commence
b.
They (the ones who worship the beast, its image and
receives its mark) will be tormented
i. Tormented with burning
sulfur in the presence of the holy angels and the Lamb
ii. And the smoke of their
torment will rise forever and ever
1. E t e r n a l H e l l
(Gahanna)
2. Forever and ever
c.
There will be NO REST
i. Day or night – never ending,
NO REST (no relief, never stopping, no end…eternal)
ii. For those who worship the
beast and its image or receives the mark of its name
iii. The Holy Spirit is the mark
(sealed) for Christians
iv. This marking is spiritual in
nature and may mean possession by demons
CONCLUSION
–
This calls for
patience and endurance on the part of the People of God who keep His commands
and remain faithful to Jesus.
Then I heard a
voice from heaven say “Write this: Blessed (LIT: Happy) are the dead who die in the Lord from now
on. Yes”, says the Spirit (God), “They will rest from their labor for
their deeds will follow them.”
Though the believers who
kept God’s commands and remained faithful to Jesus had toil and trouble, and it
was a lot of hard work to remain so, they will be “happy” after they die
because they will find peaceful rest from their labor, and their deeds, all the
good things they did for the Lord while alive, will “follow them”
Nothing will be forgotten,
lost, unrecognized. Everything done in His name while you were alive will live
forever with you!
Remember this chapter of
Revelation is an outline for the coming final chapters of the book.
