To Judge Ourselves Part 9 – Deeds

To Judge Ourselves
Part 9 – Deeds

INTRODUCTION
We spent the last year looking at what the Book of Acts had to say about the founding, operation and behavior that the Lord expects from us as individuals, and as a church, or congregation of believers.

We then spent a few weeks looking at the letters that Jesus sent to the seven churches in Revelation, telling them where they were going right, and wrong, as well as what the punishments and rewards would be.

A few weeks ago, I took all of those letters, and compiled them into one letter from the Lord, to us.

Our new series will take a look at each of the points Jesus made in that letter, and we will not only examine our church as a whole, but ourselves as individuals.

2 Corinthians 13:5 "Examine yourselves, to see whether you are in the faith. Test yourselves. Or do you not realize this about yourselves, that Jesus Christ is in you?—unless indeed you fail to meet the test!"

1 John 1:9 "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

2 Peter 2:4-10 "For if God did not spare angels when they sinned, but cast them into hell[a] and committed them to chains of gloomy darkness to be kept until the judgment; if he did not spare the ancient world, but preserved Noah, a herald of righteousness, with seven others, when he brought a flood upon the world of the ungodly; if by turning the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah to ashes he condemned them to extinction, making them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;[c] and if he rescued righteous Lot, greatly distressed by the sensual conduct of the wicked (for as that righteous man lived among them day after day, he was tormenting his righteous soul over their lawless deeds that he saw and heard); then the Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials, and to keep the unrighteous under punishment until the day of judgment, 10 and especially those who indulge[e] in the lust of defiling passion and despise authority."

We have already looked at Jesus speaking to us about hard work, not tolerating wicked people in the church, and testing those who claim to be apostles, but are nothing more than false prophets, and last week we spoke on perseverance, and enduring hardships for His name, Spiritually Rich during times of affliction and poverty, Slander, Not Being Afraid, Where Satan Rules.

Last week we looked at Faithfulness.

This week we will look at Deeds.

SCRIPTURE REFERENCE
Revelation 2:18b
"19 ...I know your deeds, your love and faith, your service and perseverance, and that you are now doing more than you did at first...."

I.         I KNOW YOUR DEEDS
a.      Your Deed (work or action of) Love
                                                             i.      Jesus commends Thyatira on their love

ii.      We know love is an "action"

                                                       iii.      I Corinthians 13:4-8a
1.      "... Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proudIt does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongsLove does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truthIt always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.
Love never fails..."

iv.      Jesus tells us in John 14:23-24 " 23 Jesus replied, “Anyone who loves me will obey my teaching. My Father will love them, and we will come to them and make our home with them. 24 Anyone who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me."

1.      Loving Jesus is Obeying His teachings.

2.      When you Love (obey Jesus' teachings) Jesus, The Father will "love" them.

3.      What is the Father's Love? Actions.

4.      God  loves you so much that He sent His Son to die on the cross for you, that you might have everlasting life. His love is not based on performance. Christ loves you so much that while you were yet a sinner, He died for you.

5.      However, Hebrews 12 teaches that, God Disciplines the Ones He Loves.

6.      "Our earthly fathers trained us for a few brief years, doing the best for us that they knew how, but God's correction is always right and for our best good, that we may share his holiness. Being punished isn't enjoyable while it is happening -- it hurts! But afterwards we can see the result, a quiet growth in grace and character."

b.     Your Deed (work or action of) Faith
                                                             i.      James 2:17 "...faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead."

ii.      Faith MUST be followed by action, or it is "dead" faith, and of no use.

c.      Your Deed (work or action of) Service
                                                             i.      Do it to GLORIFY GOD
1.      Matthew 5:14-16
"You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. "Nor do men light a lamp, and put it under the peck-measure, but on the lampstand; and it gives light to all who are in the house. "Let your light shine before men in such a way that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father who is in heaven.

                                                          ii.      Jesus is our example
1.      Matthew 23:11
"But the greatest among you shall be your servant.

                                                       iii.      Serve one another
1.      Ephesians 6:5-7
Slaves, be obedient to those who are your masters according to the flesh, with fear and trembling, in the sincerity of your heart, as to Christ; not by way of eye service, as men-pleasers, but as slaves of Christ, doing the will of God from the heart. With good will render service, as to the Lord, and not to men,

d.     Your Deed (work or action of) Perseverance
                                                             i.      Perseverance is the "action" of NOT giving up, regardless of what is unfolding in the world around you, or what the outward circumstances in life may be...you stay the course!

ii.      Jesus commended Ephesus for their perseverance,  and Pergamum, Thyatira and Philadelphia, though they had faults, in some areas they persevered.

II.      ACTIONS OVER WORDS
a.      Actions of Love
                                                             i.      Actions always speak louder than words

ii.      Anyone can "say" anything, however, NOT everyone can "live" I Corinthians 13

iii.      Matthew 22:34-40 " 34 Hearing that Jesus had silenced the Sadducees, the Pharisees got together. 35 One of them, an expert in the law, tested him with this question: 36 “Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?”
37 Jesus replied: “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39 And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’ 40 All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments.”

iv.      How do you love God? "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind"

                                                            v.      How do you love your Neighbor (unsaved)? ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.’
vi.      How do you love your Brother (saved)? 1 John 4:20 "If anyone says, “I love God,” and hates his brother, he is a liar; for he who does not love his brother whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen."

vii.      How do you love Jesus? John 14:15 Jesus said, "...If you love me, keep my commands."

b.     Actions of Faith
                                                             i.      Believing, reading the Word, Praying, giving thanks, waiting to hear, waiting to be lead, waiting on God's timing.

ii.      Faith without action is a dead faith, and useless...

c.      Actions of Service
                                                             i.      Sharing the Gospel Message

ii.      Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace in its various forms. Peter 4:10

iii.      For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many." Mark 10:45

iv.      Matthew 6:24 "No one can serve two masters. Either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Money."

                                                            v.      James 1:27 "Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world."

d.     Actions of Perseverance
                                                             i.      Ignoring outward circumstances, not allowing them to dictate your life, actions, love, faith, but standing on God's Word, and believing in it!

III.  HOWEVER...ACTIONS CANNOT SAVE, ONLY SERVE
a.      Deeds, Works, Actions, Cannot Save You
                                                             i.      If you are "saved", you will have FRUIT!

ii.      This fruit is naturally produced in your life BECAUSE you are saved...not "to save".

b.     Deeds, Works, Actions, Are How We Love the Lord and Serve Him

c.      There is Only One thing that can Save!
                                                             i.      “Enter through the narrow gate; for the gate is wide and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and there are many who enter through it. For the gate is small and the way is narrow that leads to life, and there are few who find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)

ii.      “Jesus said to him, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me.” (John 14:6)

iii.      “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12)

iv.      “He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who does not obey the Son will not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him.” (John 3:36)

                                                            v.      “For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus” (1 Timothy 2:5)

vi.      “And this is the testimony: God has given us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. Whoever has the Son has life; whoever does not have the Son of God does not have life.” (1 John 5:11-12)

CONCLUSION
Acts  4:11-12  Jesus is “‘the stone you builders rejected, which has become the cornerstone.’
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”
