SERMON INTRODUCTION
The Book of Revelation, or the Revelation of Christ, is the most difficult book in the bible.

Because of this fact, many avoid it, or ignore it all together. Some fear lack of understanding, others afraid to misinterpret, which I guess it is better to avoid than dive in and get it completely wrong.

Many times, when a new believer comes to me for direction, they want to jump right into Revelation and find out what’s to come.

This is equivalent to deciding one day to learn Mandarin and sitting down to author a novel in Chinese that very same day.

Or, a kindergartener learning how to count, and then trying to calculate quantum mechanics calculations.

The words in Revelation have caused much debate on rapture, judgement, even some who claim John was writing about the events in his day in code rather than Jesus Christ revealing to him about the coming events and Judgment.

A special blessing is promised to those who read Revelation.

Although it may be a difficult book, we could all use a special blessing, reading this is good for us all, and with the help of the Holy Spirit, we will take the Revelation of Christ in small portions and gain understanding, little by little.

Part 22 – Trumpets 1-4

SCRIPTURE READING
Revelation 8:6-13
Then the seven angels who had the seven trumpets prepared to sound them.

7 The first angel sounded his trumpet, and there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth. A third of the earth was burned up, a third of the trees were burned up, and all the green grass was burned up.

8 The second angel sounded his trumpet, and something like a huge mountain, all ablaze, was thrown into the sea. A third of the sea turned into blood, 9 a third of the living creatures in the sea died, and a third of the ships were destroyed.

10 The third angel sounded his trumpet, and a great star, blazing like a torch, fell from the sky on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water— 11 the name of the star is Wormwood.[a] A third of the waters turned bitter, and many people died from the waters that had become bitter.

12 The fourth angel sounded his trumpet, and a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them turned dark. A third of the day was without light, and also a third of the night.

13 As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice: “Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”

          I.      THE FIRST ANGEL SOUNDS HIS TRUMPET
a.   The seven angels and their seven trumpets prepare to sound them
                                     i.   First thing to note, seven
1.   This signifies perfect judgment, what is about to take place is completely in control of God, completely perfect, completely just and righteous.

ii.   Also, these seven angels were “given” these trumpets.
1.   The power is not theirs to wield at their own will, but they were equipped by God to serve Him and His will.

iii.   What has led up to the Trumpets?
1.   God has prepared the earth for the coming Tribulation
a.   The Lord’s introduction of Himself to John
b.   The seven letters to the seven churches to John
c.   These were pictures of the Lord’s revealing Himself to the entire world through the Old Covenant (image of 12 elders before the throne on one side), and the New Covenant (12 elders on other side of throne in heaven)
d.   The seven letters representing the entirety of the Lord’s will for the church (body of Christ) as well as a picture of the Church Age (age of grace) timeline of the church (body of Christ) before the coming judgment.
e.   The seven seals are broken

b.   The first angel sounded his trumpet
                                     i.   Now, with the seventh seal opened, the seven trumpets begin

ii.   The first angel sounded his trumpet announcing the “arrival” of the 7th seals special delivery.

iii.   Remember in Revelation 8:3-5 “Another angel, who had a golden censer, came and stood at the altar. He was given much incense to offer, with the prayers of all God’s people, on the golden altar in front of the throne. 4 The smoke of the incense, together with the prayers of God’s people, went up before God from the angel’s hand. 5 Then the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and hurled it on the earth; and there came peals of thunder, rumblings, flashes of lightning and an earthquake.”

iv.   This is why “there came hail and fire mixed with blood, and it was hurled down on the earth.”

                                    v.   The very blood of Christ that was rejected by man is part of the judgment against them.

c.   The effects upon the earth
                                     i.   1/3 of the earth was burned up
ii.   1/3 of the trees were burned up
iii.   And all the green grass was burned up

II.      THE SECOND ANGEL SOUNDS HIS TRUMPET
a.   The second angel sounds his trumpet
                                     i.   Something “like” a huge mountain all a blaze was thrown in the sea
                                    ii.   Obviously, a giant meteor

b.   The effect upon the sea
                                     i.   1/3 of the sea turned to blood
ii.   1/3 of the living creatures died
iii.   1/3 of all ships were destroyed

III.      THE THIRD ANGEL SOUNDS HIS TRUMPET
a.   The third angel sounds his trumpet
                                     i.   And a great star (probably a smaller, but still large, piece of the first Mountain meteor) blazing like a torch (from entering the earths atmosphere) fell from the sky on 1/3 of rivers and springs (fresh water supply).

b.   The effects upon the fresh waters
                                     i.   The name of the star was wormwood
1.   In Hebrew the word means “curse”
2.   Found seven times in the Old Testament
3.   Used once in New testament
ii.   1/3 of fresh water is poisoned
iii.   Many die because of this

IV.      THE FOURTH ANGEL SOUNDS HIS TRUMPET
a.   The fourth angel sounds his trumpet
                                     i.   Now that the earth has been struck multiple times by meteors, the debris thrown into the atmosphere is having an effect on it

b.   The effects upon the heavens (first and second)
                                     i.   1/3 of the sun is darkened (less light reaches earth because of the debris)
ii.   1/3 of the moon is darkened (same reason)
iii.   1/3 of the stars darkened
iv.   1/3 of day loses light (gets dark earlier and takes longer to light up because as the sun rises and sets, you are peering through MORE of the atmosphere!)
                                    v.   1/3 of the night is darker as well, for the very same reason

CONCLUSION –
“As I watched, I heard an eagle that was flying in midair call out in a loud voice, “Woe! Woe! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth, because of the trumpet blasts about to be sounded by the other three angels!”
Remember, the eagle in scripture represents God, and “loud” can mean as in volume, power or strength, or authority…here it probably means all of the above!
All may hear this, as God speaks in power and authority, Woe! Woe! Woe!
To the inhabitants of the earth (those who have rejected the Blood of Christ and are now judged by it!
And if they think the first four trumpets were bad…the next three blasts ar far worse.

Next week we look at the last three trumpets
