SCRIPTURE READING

Mark 6:7 – 13 Jesus sends out the Twelve

7 Calling the Twelve to him, he sent them out two by two and gave them authority over evil spirits.

8 These were his instructions: "Take nothing for the journey except a staff—no bread, no bag, no money in your belts. 9 Wear sandals but not an extra tunic.

10 Whenever you enter a house, stay there until you leave that town.

11 And if any place will not welcome you or listen to you, shake the dust off your feet when you leave, as a testimony against them."

12 They went out and preached that people should repent.

13 They drove out many demons and anointed many sick people with oil and healed them.”

I. THEIR FIRST MISSION TRIP WITHOUT JESUS

a. SENT BY THE LORD

i. God’s First Will – that you are saved.

1Timothy 2:3-5

3 This is good, and pleases God our Savior, 4 who wants all men to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. 5 For there is one God and one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus”

ii. God’s Second Will – that you share the Gospel

Matthew 18:18-20

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

iii. God’s Third Will – How He will enable you to do so

Romans 12:6

We have different gifts, according to the grace given us.

1 Corinthians 14:12

12 So it is with you. Since you are eager to have spiritual gifts, try to excel in gifts that build up the church.

b. TWO BY TWO

i. No one person is the Body of Christ

Romans 12:5

so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.

1 Corinthians 12:12

The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ.

1 Corinthians 12:27

Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.

ii. God ministers to us through others

Ephesians 4:11-13

11 It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

iii. Gifts of the Spirit to Build & Edify the Body of Christ

c. GIVEN POWER & AUTHORITY

i. We are the branch & He is the vine

John 15:1-8

1 "I am the true vine, and my Father is the gardener. 2 He cuts off every branch in me that bears no fruit, while every branch that does bear fruit he prunes so that it will be even more fruitful. 3 You are already clean because of the word I have spoken to you. 4 Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me.

5 "I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not remain in me, he is like a branch that is thrown away and withers; such branches are picked up, thrown into the fire and burned. 7 If you remain in me and my words remain in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be given you. 8 This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples.

ii. He has the power and authority

Colossians 2:10

and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority.

Luke 10:19

I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you.

iii. We are His servants, going out in His Name

It is not in our name, power or authority, but in Christ’s!

II. RELY ON GOD

a. COMMANDED IN THE LORDS WILL

i. We must follow His lead, not ours

ii. We must follow His instructions

iii. Obey His commands

b. RELY ON GOD

i. Take nothing with you

ii. Do not build storehouses for yourself

Luke 12:13-21

13 Someone in the crowd said to him, "Teacher, tell my brother to divide the inheritance with me."

14 Jesus replied, "Man, who appointed me a judge or an arbiter between you?"

15 Then he said to them, "Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions."

16 And he told them this parable: "The ground of a certain rich man produced a good crop. 17 He thought to himself, 'What shall I do? I have no place to store my crops.'

18 "Then he said, 'This is what I'll do. I will tear down my barns and build bigger ones, and there I will store all my grain and my goods.

19 And I'll say to myself, "You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink and be merry." '

20 "But God said to him, 'You fool! This very night your life will be demanded from you. Then who will get what you have prepared for yourself?'

21 “This is how it will be with anyone who stores up things for himself but is not rich toward God."

iii. Jesus said look at the sparrows

Matthew 6:26

26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?

c. BLESSINGS TAKEN AND GIVEN

i. God’s blessings through His servants

ii. God deals with those who turn against His children

Mark 9:42

And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

III. PREACH CHRIST’S MESSAGE

a. The Message Jesus taught

i. The Gospel of Jesus Christ

No other message is needed!

What did Christ teach?

b. For men to repent

i. Confess your sinful

ii. Repent of the sin to receive forgiveness

iii. Receive Jesus Christ as your Lord

iv. Be baptized in the Name of the Father Son and Holy Spirit

v. Obey His Commands!

c. Cast out demons, anoint with oil and heal the sick

i. Power of God through His servants

CONCLUSION

2 Corinthians 5:10

For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive what is due him for the things done while in the body, whether good or bad.

Is Jesus Christ your Lord? Are you Obeying His Commands?
