SERMON INTRODUCTION
James, the brother of Jesus and leader of the Jerusalem council, concludes his letter to the twelve tribes.

In this letter, James has spoken on trials and temptations, the testing of faith, and the source of our temptations.  He explained the differences between listening and doing, and how favoritism is forbidden in the Kingdom.

James also talks about faith and deeds, taming our tongues, the two kinds of wisdom and warnings against worldliness.

James warns us against fighting, spiritual unfaithfulness, pride, slander and boasting, as well as warning us about rich oppressors.

James closes his letter with scripture on patience and suffering as well as oaths.

Today we will look at the lasts part of James’ letter, where he speaks about the prayer of the righteous in faith, and a message about those who may wander from God and the Truth.

TODAY’S SERMON
Part 15 - The Prayer of Faith

SCRIPTURE READING
James 5:13-20
13 Is anyone among you in trouble? Let them pray. Is anyone happy? Let them sing songs of praise. 14 Is anyone among you sick? Let them call the elders of the church to pray over them and anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord. 15 And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well; the Lord will raise them up. If they have sinned, they will be forgiven. 16 Therefore confess your sins to each other and pray for each other so that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person is powerful and effective.

17 Elijah was a human being, even as we are. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years. 18 Again he prayed, and the heavens gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

19 My brothers and sisters, if one of you should wander from the truth and someone should bring that person back, 20 remember this: Whoever turns a sinner from the error of their way will save their soul from death and cover over a multitude of sins.”

       I.            WHEN TO PRAY

a.      Is anyone among you in trouble?
                                                             i.      He should pray

ii.      Prayer should be our first thought, not a last resort.

b.     Is anyone happy?
                                                             i.      Let him sing songs of praise

ii.      Always remember to thank God for the things which bring you happiness in life...all good things come from His hand.

iii.      Not just answered prayers, blessings or things of material substance, but the songs of birds, the sun in the sky no a beautiful morning, the cool breeze on a hot day, there are literally hundreds of things to praise God for on a daily basis!

iv.      Being in a thankful / grateful state allows God to bless you and allow you to be a blessing to others.

c.      Is any one of you sick?
                                                             i.      Let them call on the Elders of the church to pray over them
1.      Those who are sick, should call on the Elders to pray over them...this is their “action”, and “doing”, to fulfill and complete their faith.  God has made the first move, making Himself available through Christ Jesus to you, now you must respond appropriately with obedience to that call, allowing the releasing of God’s blessing.

ii.      Anoint them with oil in the name of the Lord
1.      This is an outward representation of a spiritual truth, taking place inside the person.  Just as communion, outwardly represents a spiritual truth, and baptism, the anointing with oil represents the covering of God’s Holy Spirit on a person, which brings blessings, power, gifts, fruits, protection and healing!

a.      It is not the bread and wine that saves, it is not the water that cleanses, it is not the oil that heals, but all represent the power of God which is received by us through the Holy Spirit!

iii.      And the prayer offered in faith will make the sick person well.

d.     The LORD will raise them up
                                                             i.      The power of God, not the physical elements, and most definitely NOT the man or woman praying.

e.      If they have sinned (cause of some sickness), they will be forgiven

                                                             i.      Some sickness in our lives is caused by our sin.

1.      Alcoholism and drug addiction - We are warned against drunkenness in scripture (mind altering substances)

2.      gluttony - We are warned about over eating in scripture

3.      not obeying natural laws - These may not be “sins”, however we must make wise choices and take care of the temples in which God has entrusted us (our bodies)

a.      eating proper foods
b.     drinking enough water
c.      as well as obeying laws of physics
                                                                                                                                      i.      Jumping from high places...etc...

ii.      Other sins can cause sickness as well
1.      unforgiveness
2.      anger/hate
3.      bitterness
4.      jealousy

iii.      Not all sickness is caused by sin
1.      John 9:2-3aAnd his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?
Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents:”

2.      Luke 13:2-5Jesus answered, “Do you think that these Galileans were worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they suffered this way? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish. Or those eighteen who died when the tower in Siloam fell on them—do you think they were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem? I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish.”

iv.      Some sickness comes because we live in a sin filled fallen world, If you have sinned to cause your sickness, your sin will be forgiven when you call on the Elders to pray for you, either way, regardless of the reason, the Elders will pray for you and anoint you with oil.

f.       Therefore, confess your sins to each other, and pray for each other, so that you may be healed.

                                                             i.      Jesus said, “You have not, because you ask not...”

ii.      If you are sick, confess your sins to each other, and pray for each other, so that you may be healed!

g.      The prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective.
                                                             i.      James then gives an example of this principal in verse 17-18

II.            ELIJAH WAS A HUMAN, JUST LIKE US
a.      He prayed it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years

                                                             i.      At the time of Elijah, the Israelite's had taken to worshiping another god, Baal. This form of worship was very depraved and involved the ceremonial killing of babies (like some countries have with abortion). Baal was a god of agriculture, and they made human sacrifices to him because they believed it was Baal, (not God), that controlled the seasons and the weather.

This situation could not continue. These horrific bloodthirsty depraved practices had to stop. Elijah was a righteous man who prayed for the rain to stop, and the people experienced a three and a half-year drought.

1.      This was also the same amount of time Jesus’ ministry lasted, when He gave us the watering of the Holy Spirit through His ministry.

Elijah said, let the Baal worshippers call on their God and if Baal existed, he could send them rain.

Of course Baal was in reality a fictional, dreamt up, imaginary god that could do nothing at all! By the end of the three and a half years it was clear who was the True God and that it was time to clear the land of these terrible practices.

If Elijah had not prayed as he did, who knows how many more babies would have been sacrificed to this false god.

We have the same situation in our country today.  Millions of babies a year sacrificed to the false god known as selfishness.  This self-centered being comes in many forms, but always wants the same thing, its own way of life at the cost of another’s.

In 1996 alone, 1.2 million babies were sacrificed to the god known as selfishness.

That is 3,287 babies per day.  In other words, since Roe v. Wade in 1973 which made abortions legal, by 2010 - 53,310,843 babies have been murdered legally in the United States.

53 million.

According to the lifenews.com and the Guttmacher & CDC, by 2018 that number has grown to over 60 million!

These numbers ONLY reflect reported and legal abortions.

Hitler was responsible for 21 million deaths.

Stalin murdered 18 million.

Mao’s “great leap forward” in China killed 45 million.

And we called them monsters, recorded in history as the vile scourge of the earth...and we, the proud USA, have over 60 million babies murdered “Legally” under our belt.

Abortion is not the proper term, but a scientific definition.  The actual term for what is taking place is genocide.  Look it up in the dictionary.  It is ungodly, and it is a sin.

Elijah prayed for God to stop up the heavens, and rain to stop, and they did.

b.     Elijah prayed again three and a half years later, the heavens opened up and gave rain, and the earth produced its crops.

III.            BROTHER’S AND SISTER’S
a.      James is reminding those listening that they are believers, and follower of Christ.

b.     If any of you should wander from the truth (as the Israelite's did)

                                                             i.      Salvation can be walked away from, God’s Will can be abandoned, the narrow path can be left behind for the broad road!

ii.      We read in Jude that the angels gave up their heavenly abode, and so can we!

c.      If any of you should wander from the truth And someone should bring them back

                                                             i.      We can also return, and be forgiven, and become a child of God once again, such as the prodigal son!

d.     Remember this:
                                                             i.      whoever (righteous man’s prayers)
ii.      turns a sinner (who is the sinner here? The follower of Christ, the brother or sister who has wandered from the truth and one true God)
iii.      from the error (sin) of their way,
iv.      they will save their soul from death (the second death - eternal)
                                                            v.      and hide a multitude of sins (forgive)

CONCLUSION
We should pray when we are in trouble, sing songs of praise to God when we are happy, and when we are sick, we should call on the Elders of the church to pray over us, anoint us with oil, so that if sin has caused our sickness, we will be forgiven, and we will become well.

James also reminds us that the prayers of the righteous are powerful, and we need to confess our sins to each other, and pray for each other so that we may be healed.

If we see a brother or sister wandering from the truth, away from God, we need to try to bring them back, so that they do not lose their place in heaven.  If we do bring them back, we will save their soul from the second death, which is eternal separation from God, and cover a multitude of sins they may have committed during their departure from God.

SERMON INTRODUCTION
James is continuing his letter to the twelve tribes, as leader of the Jerusalem council; he is giving this letter as a teaching and instructional guide to those Jews who claim to be followers of Jesus Christ. These letters and instructions can do us all good if we too claim to follow Christ.

James told us in last week’s scripture, that injustices will come, sometimes by the hand of the rich and fall on to those who are innocent.

This week, James wants us to understand why we must be patient for justice, and the Lord’s coming.

Are you being patient, and standing firm in your faith during the trials and tests that are in your life?

Part 14 - Patience in Suffering

SCRIPTURE READING

James 5:7-12
7 Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains. 8 You too, be patient and stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near. 9 Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!
10 Brothers and sisters, as an example of patience in the face of suffering, take the prophets who spoke in the name of the Lord. 11 As you know, we count as blessed those who have persevered. You have heard of Job’s perseverance and have seen what the Lord finally brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.
12 Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear—not by heaven or by earth or by anything else. All you need to say is a simple “Yes” or “No.” Otherwise you will be condemned.”

       I.            PATIENCE UNTIL THE LORDS COMING

a.      Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming.
                                                             i.      James 5:1-6 Just spoke of the injustices that can take place in this world, and the suffering that is caused by those who have riches, and how the innocent can be condemned and murdered by them.  James is now telling us through the Holy Spirit, we are to be patient for JUSTICE IS COMING!

ii.      Romans 12:1919 Do not take revenge, my dear friends, but leave room for God’s wrath, for it is written: “It is mine to avenge; I will repay,” says the Lord.”

iii.      The cure to all injustice in this world is the second coming of the Lord!

b.     See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.
                                                             i.      James reveals the plan of God through the Holy Spirit in this verse, and gives the answer to why the Lord waits to return.  If you wonder WHY God is waiting to return, and why justice is taking so long to come, this is the reason.

1.      The farmer awaiting his land to yield its valuable crop is God waiting for humanity to receive salvation.

a.      2 Peter 3:9 “The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.”

2.      This valuable crop God awaits is you and me.

3.      The rain from heaven is the Lord, who came the first time as a lamb, to be sacrificed for our iniquities, and make those who turn to Him, in a right relationship with God again.  This was the early rain.

4.      The latter rain is the second coming of the Lord, when all the injustices will be made right.

ii.      We see in scripture, the Holy Spirit reveals that the second coming of the Lord is to happen late in the year, the year of all time.  This is going to take place during the feast of the Lord called Rosh Hashanah.

iii.      The second coming, this late rain, is very near, and the sounding of the trumpets, Rosh Hashanah, the rapture, is right at the door!

c.      You too, be patient...
                                                             i.      We should be patient for our justice, knowing that others have to come to the Lord as we did.

d.     and Stand Firm
                                                             i.      Matthew 10:22 “You will be hated by everyone because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

ii.      Matthew 24:13 “but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.”

iii.      Luke 21:19Stand firm, and you will win life.”

iv.      I Corinthians 15:58 “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

                                                            v.      I Peter 5:9 “Resist him, standing firm in the faith, because you know that the family of believers throughout the world is undergoing the same kind of sufferings.”

vi.      Ephesians 6:14Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place,”

e.      Stand firm, because the Lord’s coming is near...we should be constantly thinking about the rapture, and what we are doing to serve the Lord.

f.       Do not grumble against one another...
                                                             i.      The Lord is coming to avenge injustice...

ii.      Even if that injustice is caused by another believer...grumble against a brother or sister, and you will be judged...for the Judge is standing at the door!

iii.      There are those, even now, claiming to be believers, only God knows, who speak against other believers. Half truths, or their perception of situations, not speaking the truth, but what they think or believe.  These injustices too will be made right.

II.            PROPHETS ARE OUR EXAMPLE OF PATIENCE
a.      The prophets (and Apostles) are to be our examples of patience in times of suffering, and affliction.
                                                             i.      Even though they stood in a high and holy office, they were not exempt from affliction...and neither are we.

b.     Blessed are those who persevere!
                                                             i.      James began this letter blessing those who persevere.

ii.      Persevere (LIT: enduring), implies that trials and tests may last for quite some time!  Long enough to make you want to give up.

c.      You have heard of the patience of Job and seen what the lord brought about. The Lord is full of compassion and mercy.

                                                             i.      What is Job’s example???

ii.      Trials and tests came by the hand of Satan, but they were allowed by God.
1.      They were for Job’s good.

iii.      Job’s children were killed...how is this for Job’s good?
1.      Job 1:13 - the only thing said about his children were they were all eating and drinking wine...they were partiers, showing no regard for the Lord, or for their father’s faith.  When we live outside of God’s Kingdom, we live outside of His protection.

2.      Zachariah 7:6 “And when you were eating and drinking, were you not just feasting for yourselves?”

3.      Luke 17:27 “People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.”

4.      Luke 17:28 “It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building.”

5.      Romans 14:17 “For the kingdom of God is not a matter of eating and drinking, but of righteousness, peace and joy in the Holy Spirit,”

iv.      They were living their lives for themselves...eating and drinking, with no regard for the Lord, they were not living faithful lives for God or His Kingdom.

                                                            v.      Job was also stricken by Satan, which God allowed...but because Job was faithful to the Lord, Satan could NOT kill him!

vi.      Job’s wife was killed as well by Satan, but she too was not faithful to the Lord...in Job 2:9 she tells Job to let go of his faith in the Lord and curse God and die...but Job stood firm.

vii.      Job was attacked with disease, attacked by his faithless family, attacked by his friends, lost all his children and his wife and land and livestock, YET HE STOOD FIRM.
viii.      God was merciful and restored to Job, his land, his livestock and even his family...and he lived to be old and full of days, which is another way to say he lives a happy and full life after this experience.

ix.      What the Lord allows in our lives is only for our good when we belong to Him, even if we don’t understand it.  We need to accept it, submit and repent and allow God to do His work in our lives.  When trials and tests come, seek God to learn what the lesson is He is trying to teach you.

III.            TRUTH - YOUR YES AND NO
a.      Above all...do not swear oaths, simply say “yes” or “no”.
                                                             i.      One thing that drives me crazy...people who do not keep their word.

ii.      Making commitments and breaking them, promising this and that, and not following through.

iii.      The only thing worse than someone not keeping their word, is when THEY make the promise/plans/ect and break it!

1.      I didn’t ask you for or to do anything, you offered...then you didn’t do it?

I have had people step forward without being asked when they saw a need, make commitments and promises to meet the need, choosing their own date, time, and even the offering of labor or money...and then, as if it were never promised, you never hear from them on the matter again!

b.     We are not to be double minded
                                                             i.      We represent the Lord, and the Body of Christ here on earth...we need to rightly represent Him, and His steadfast honesty, integrity and trustworthiness.

ii.      When God says “Yes”, He means Yes...and when God says “No”, He means no.

iii.      We too should live this way, not being double minded, flip-flopping all the time on what we say, and how we feel, being unstable in all our ways.

iv.      James 1:6-8 “But when you ask, you must believe and not doubt, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 That person should not expect to receive anything from the Lord. 8 Such a person is double-minded and unstable in all they do.”

                                                            v.      Double-mindedness comes from a lack of faith...and those who lack faith should not expect to receive anything from the Lord.  We receive from the Lord BECAUSE of faith...not always “what we want”, but ALWAYS “what we need”

CONCLUSION
We are to be patient in life when tests and trials come our way, and when we are suffering or an injustice has befallen us, we are to be patient in the Lord’s coming and the judging He brings with Him.

There was a time we ourselves were not saved, and what a terrible thing if God had not been patient with us.

When we are suffering, or going through trials and tests, we need to STAND FIRM in our faith.

When we do, we will be blessed beyond anything we could ever imagine.

Look to the Prophets, and the Apostles for inspiration and example.

Above all, do not turn on one another, because the coming of the Lord is near, and the Judge is at the door, and all injustices will be made right...even if those injustices come by the hand of a believer.
